Arab Jobs!

Every time I get one of those unsolicited email spam from the Arab world that has a "job" offering, I can't stop my self from laughing hysterically!

It seems that when it comes to technology in general and IT in particular we have completely missed the buss. I mean we seriously don't get it! Or at least some don't get it. Perhaps that's why they end up in my junk folder. But that's another story for another day.

What drew my attention is the ridiculous ways they ask for certain things. "10 years of experience", "15 years of experience", "Master's degree or better", this certification or that. Pure junk if you ask me. Since I had the honor to work with some of the world's greatest minds that have "fortunately" dropped from collage to build the next big thing and many have succeeded (many more have failed to be honest)

But I laugh at the requirements. You want someone with a Master's degree to work as your Monkey? Don't get me wrong, and all due respect to all degrees out there. But Collage degrees don't teach you how to code! I don't care which school you graduate from. They don't teach you how to be a great software developer. This can be generalized to just about anything you see in IT. The degree/certification is great, but means nothing! You MUST be passionate about it!

10 things you shouldn’t do on your first day at work

Samer posted a cool video on the top 10 things not to do on the first day at work, I think I can come up with a more updated list

So Top 10 things you should never do on your first day at work.

    1. Do not access your Facebook account

    God got me laid off!

It sucks when your whole existence is reduced to being a single digit in a government statistic! On the desk of some official or in a journal online.

Seriously though, it would have taken an act of God for me to leave my job. But in all frankness, it wasn't doing me any good; too much stress, too little appreciation. Even worse, I think I was getting depressed not seeing an end to the very frustrating situation.

Then, I was told that I'm being laid off, just like millions who lost their jobs everywhere...

I left my building where I've spent the last 10 years of my life, with a box of worthless memorabilia of how great I helped make that company...

    Stay at home dad!

This morning while I was getting ready to head out to work, I bumped into our neighbor who was taking his son to the bus stop.  I was planning to ask our neighbor about a nice modification he did to his house, so I walked with them while chatting about the house.

One thing lead to another and I discovered that my neighbor doesn't work! He has no job, he has not had a job for over 6 years. I was a little bit shocked, but when you live here, there's little that could shock you.

Anyway, turns out, his wife was making more money than he did, so he quit to "stay with the kid" while she went out every day to get the dough.

I was thinking on my walk back how this is quite the opposite of everything in my culture. Totally!

    But then again, why not?

    I Quit!

The most amazing two words you can say to anyone. "I Quit", (well actually one word and one letter)!

It's so refreshing to be able to talk to your boss, look them in the eyes, and say... "I quit"

Now, don't just go out and quit your jobs to experience this amazing feeling. These two words are the culmination of months of research, then finding the job, going interviews, and the madness of getting hired these days. Then after everything had been cosmically aligned, you may go to your boss and say those two lovely words...

    My last day at work...

Today was my last day... A very emotional day indeed.

After making sure I paid my dues, tidied my spot, cleaned up my trash and taken out all the junk. I made sure I "surrender" my piece of the company in a better shape than when I got it. I'm proud to have served there, and I'm proud of the wonderful work that I've done so far.

Only time will tell what kind of impact that is going to have on the life of people. But I will maintain my hopes up.

Saying good bye to people I've worked with, people I shared my time, sweat and blood with was the hardest thing ever. But it had to be done.

Do you want to be Cool or Hardworking?

Through the course of my job, I get these opportunities to really make a difference, or "Shine"!

Here's the situation, I have this pretty complicated daily task. I have to do it, every single morning, like clockwork!

Knowing that everything that takes too much of my time better be really valuable. So I thought, here's my chance to make a difference and "Shine"

So, I automated the process, it takes me less than 5 minutes to finish it now (By the way, LinQ is one heck of an amazing tool) but this post is really not about programming, so don't worry.

Anyway, now that I'm done with my amazing application, which impressed even me. Like, I didn't expect it to be this amazing, and it surpassed all my expectations, now that it's done... I'm faced with a huge dilemma!

Do I tell my manager about it (And look really awesome and cool)? Or do I enjoy my extra time and use it for something else (while still appearing to be really hardworking since I'm achieving the results)?
