Driving horrors!

Ok, I'm no alien to driving in the Jordanian capital of Amman, but it appears that the conditions have deteriorated dramatically since the last time I was here

It appears that the number of cars have doubled. Now I'm not positive that they have, but I can see that there are more cars roaming the tight streets of Amman

With that, you can also notice that the deterioration of ethics and patience among drivers. People are eager to cut each other throat, they're looking forward to it! It just shines in their eyes. As they frown from one side to the other

The drivers even seized to be tolerant to the elderly or the ladies or new drivers.

I've also noticed an escalated number of cars with fender-benders or at least some dinged or scratched sides. Just about 1 in every two has at least some minor issue.

I don't know where this country is heading to. But if these issues are left unchecked they do spell out disaster. I might be pessimistic but I feel that group therapy at the national level is needed to be able to alter the layers of bad behavior, manners and poor responses to simple problems.

Some would argue that we're in need of more strict regulations, that might be necessary but the regulation is not the problem. There are many rules that are just impossible to implement or catch people doing them. They will not be able to deter people when the watchful eye of law enforcement is not there.

What we need is a moral system that works. For that to happen, we need to start with the next generation. The young audience and instill in them the morality and integrity needed to make them better and more tolerant citizen, and my help even reform the older generation.

I remember a few years back a campaign against speeding had the slogan "Don't speed father, we're waiting for you" still resonates these days as wives remind their husbands not to speed. I think we need things like that and have these perpetual campaigns continuously financed by the money collected from offending drivers. The more the number of tickets increases, the greater the efforts should become

It might be far fetched, but it's not impossible, and really much needed.

god, i can't even imagine driving when i go back to Amman, everybody is complaining about it, i mean, it's been always crazy, but the way that people are describing it, seems like things are getting REALLY out of hands...

it is hard when u got used to follow regulations all the time here and then u have to go back and figure out that regulations only on papers and all is breaking the law one way or another...and they simply get away with it....
i noticed last year that everybody is driving like taxi drivers do...and if u donot show them that u "2ad 7alak", then u r chicken...

some people on the streets of amman should not be allowed in a car...OMG...i said i may one day drive here..bas no way..it is hard enough walking on the damned street..and then u try crossing the street at a labeled pedestrian crossing area and u have to actually stop on the freakin street so they will yeste7o 3ala damhom and stop..and they they 7amlo jmeeli kaman...tooz feehom..yeh drivers are so crazy here..it is stressfull leaving your house..in a taxi..with family driving...and walking...it is like a jungle

dont forget that we have more than 1.5 million new residence in couple of years and number of gulf tourists and jordanian working in the gulf coming back with their cars are increased as 50% of the car I saw in amman on my last visit was not holding a jordanian plate ad those people are the worst drivers ever beside the famouse taxi drivers we have.

You know every one is complains about driving in Jordan, who the hell is causing the problem then?!

I bet any thing all the people who complain if they had the choice to cut people off, or run a red light or switch lanes suddenly they would.

No Tamara, I wouldn't.
I'm not complaining because I can't do all of these things. I have the ability and skill to do them all and cause a lot of damage. But, it's the lack of skills and morals that is concerning me here. People with mediocre driving skills attempting stunts that could really harm people.

the other day, It took me exactly 13 minutes to be able to cross the road from one side to the other on the road between 6th and 7th circle. believe it or not.

u know...u hit a nerve...eefff...the streets r full with creazy ppl who r driving in a way that causes heart attack. no respect and and endless wish to take ur turn, not to mention, inhom bewarjoo 3adalathom ino ..khawa 3anak mareet...eshe bjlot...the worst thing is that when they see that u r a lady..they assume that u'll be afraid and give the way to them...any way..for the solution, yes i agree that moral awarness is an accepltable solution, but legistlation r also a good way to solve it, insted of giving tickets for silly things, give it to ppl who deserve it...never give the lisence for ppl who don't desreve it, another solution is to fix the streets up..mesh ino bekafee el 7ofar wi el qesas ele btjlot, bo7oto matabat kaman...zai ka2enha naqsaaaaaa!!...sorry i talked alot...bas ino jad eja hal post 3ala el waja3...

shoof a7keelak, ana wa7deh men el nass if i stop at a cross road and the road ahead of me is blocked, i keep space, knowing el 7mar elli bjanbi wont (i dont care what they do) bassss, i can almost sense that driving in the past two months has "slightly" gotten better... mmm, fee 3inna drivers 7ameer, fee 3inna niswan! fee 3ina khetyareh w 3inna shabab ga3dein janb wa7deh 7elweh.. besides that with no exception, everybody is a helluva driver, not ethically, but technically, and yes to a certain degree it becomes like car body language, i give priority to whomever desrves it, but i never let go of my right, all it takes is a sign :) ya3ni if u rush inside a cross road when u have the proirity, measure the crossing cars spead AHEAD of time because when ur there, u cannot look at the driver, otherwise it means: etfaddal ya zift... (i dont like the way ppl drive in amman, its takhallof, but i cannot deny it is much more fun, its kind of a good material for Top Gear)

I absolutely HATE how guys underestimate female drivers, they always try to cut me off or scare me into letting them by. I won't tolerate it! I am a good driver and i know it. If the girl is competitive or refuses to let the guy have his way he sees it as a challenge and races her. I know that's wut guys do to me, they always try to race me, but i'm a hard-headed girl, I don't give in and I won't give up my right. And it just feels so good when i beat them. The look on thier faces is just priceless :)

i hate to say this...i actually do not beleive im saying this...but the female drivers in jordan are the worst..they are the ones that do not want to stop...and then u freakin..(i so wanna used a bad word here) see a woman with three children crossing the road u f*ukin stop...especially when u r a bitch with kids of your own in the car..u know how unpredictable kids can be...so when kids are crossing the road and u wanna make a left turn..u stop and wait untill they are done crossing..stupid ugly bitch! uggh im so mad thinking about those ugly stupid women driving...meen le7mar eli 3atahom the licence...uggh...ok i guess i should vent about this on my own blog eh?? when i talk about amman streets i can go on forever..and i've only been here for a month..ok i'll end this long comment now..wallah.

Being a passenger in a car in Jordan seems to be a dicey gamble at best.

I can remember blowing through a 4-way stop at a high rate of speed, screaming, "THERE'S A STOP SIGN!!", only to be looked at like I was nuts. I was politely informed it was a "suggestion", which is part of the problem - "suggestions" only apply to "others". Another memorable experience was driving head on into three lanes of oncoming traffic, again screaming while the driver thought I was nuts.

There are plenty more horror stories, but how many do you need to illustrate the non-existent policing of traffic laws coupled with "special persons" designation that "exempts" one from obeying them?

Drive like your grandmother's in the other car - ie., don't run it down, don't cut it off, don't flip it off.
