     Samer Al Majali

    Dear Samer Al Majali

This is an open letter of complaint to your good self in good faith regarding the miserable conditions that Royal Jordanian airline is exhibiting. Especially on one of your flagship flights to the USA

I have always been a proponent of Royal Jordanian. For the longest period of time I've been giving them the benefit of the doubt. Especially when it comes to the herculean endeavours running a daily flight to the USA.

Let me start with the reservation process.

I was told that the "class" that my open-ended-ticket was purchased on has been all been filled. Only to be issued a ticket at the check-in counter of exactly the same class (I had to pay the difference to upgrade to my same-class!)

Money really is no object, but the attitude is.

I spent few hours on the phone with your US office. Sadly that translates to a lot of dollars being paid to the 1800 line. What that means is less efficiency in operation and higher overhead. [And in that department, I have a number of Ideas that I can share to help you keep cost to minimum and provide excellent customer service). Feel free to contact me if you're interested

Next comes that issue of the check-in counter in Chicago Airport.

I have NEVER in my whole life, and with any of the airlines that I've been on seen a counter that is closed-for-check-ins. With two "Wasta" lanes. It was very sad trying to explain to the Americans standing in that line why "some" people are bypassing the people who have been standing in that line four couple of hours.

The second problem was seeing the employees in the office, refusing to go out and start checking in people. Forcing them to form a line that extended outside of terminal 5 in Chicago airport.

I understand that it's a tough crowd the employees are dealing with, but they need to set an example in order, efficiency and professionalism. Sadly, the most professional and efficient employee was one that had the SAS sign on his uniform.

And then, came the flight, first the condition of the airplane

The Airplane (Airbus 340) was in such miserable condition that it really made me feel sad, and almost vow not to ever get on a flight that seems to have a lot of damage. Even if it was superficial. How would the passenger evaluate the true condition of the plane if he keeps seeing all these issues.

    1. The water faucet was detached from it based, and precious water was being wasted none stop
    2. The cabinet below the water faucet, clearly marked not to be opened has come off it's hinges and the whole face-lid ware exposed and appeared dangerous
    3. The overhead spotlights were non-functioning. The whole row I was in didn't have a single one that could be turned on. I checked
    4. The overhead TV's were spinning with Vertical alignment
    5. The entertainment composed of: Some Asian company building bridges for their, railroad. Spiderman3, and a 1 hour TV show. (For a 12 hour flight). Interestingly the entertainment system is still VHS based (correction s-VHS) That whole rack can be replaced with a DVR unit that weighs 1/10 takes 1/10 the space and serves everyone in real time. Add to that that there are no "Tapes" to change

    The service

    1. most people hauled the trays they had themselves to the kitchenette
    2. The service was so slow and clumsy that people started walking over to the kitchenette to get things
    3. The Call button was on for 45 minutes with no one answering it. I finally gave up
    4. The English was so poor that people literally laughed at every single announcement
    5. When one of the crew was asked for anything that would usually take 5 seconds to answer they would disappear for 20 minutes and come back with a smart-ass remark
    6. The attitudes of the people working there need to be checked. Just about every single one of them thinks that people on the flight are actually working for them and not the other way around
    7. The Concept of friendly is lacking
    8. The concept of the customer is always right is non-existent
    9. The crew didn't render any assistance or help to people who needed it the most. Nursing mothers, families traveling with kids who were obviously overwhelmed
    10. The crew overslept and woke up too late to fix the breakfast meal
    11. I'm not going to comment about the food, I actually thought that part was done well done
    12. The crew smelled like smoke, which is completely inconsiderate to the passangers who couldn't smoke. Thank god I quit somoking a while ago

    Royal Wings magazine

    1. Most articles are written by non-Arabic writers. (And I find it odd that we don't have good writers to fill the pages of the magazine)
    2. The magazine fails to capture the essence of the Jordanian experience, there just isn't enough originality in it
    3. One of the pictures of Mansour Mouasher was there, without mentioning him
    4. Apart from the fancy glossy paper of the magazine. Nothing else is interesting. I read the article that "Samer al Majali" had in the first page, and felt saddened to see how just about every value, concept or competence mentioned was lacking during the flight.

The condition is really horrible. I will probably reconsider several times before thinking of RJ another time, IF I ever decide to do so.

This was one horrible experience that I'm not eager to repeat, I was sad, ashamed, upset and angry that the pride and joy of our kingdom and the holder of our nations most prestigious name failed to perform in front of the multi-national passengers on that flight.

The service was not Royal, and I'm ashamed to call such a service Jordanian. Call it anything you want but such poor service shouldn't be branded with our nation's identity

    Memories....

Oh Qwaider, so sorry to hear that, well, let me tell you the ONLY time I decided to travel with RJ was the worst flight in my life, I had a hard time checking in my luggage, the service was horrible, the flight attendants are so rude, I’ll never do it again, I’ll pick any airline but not RJ..
But above all that, I’m glad you made it safe, now enjoy your time there :)
Make sure to stay away from shawerma :D …

this is the jordanian government's famous Progress Dance: the one step forward, two steps back. that's what nepotism, croniesm, and plain old fashioned corruption and incompetence can do to a national airline.

Imagine how Jordan's image will tarnished by this non-stop mediocrity.

LORD! WHY DID YOU CURSE JORDAN WITH SUCH A GOVERNMENT! WHAT HAVE WE DONE TO DESERVE THIS DISHONOR!

Sounds like you had a real bummer of a flight.

I fly Royal Jordanian quite a bit (about 12-16 times each year) and each flight seems to be hit or miss.  There are times when I end up on an excellent, new airplane with individual entertainment units.  I would expect the newer, more convenient planes on all flights that take longer than 5-6 hours, but unfortunately that is not the case.

Other times, I end up on some dilapidated, run down plane that needs to be retired.  You know the type, where the televisions are broken, the sound doesn't work, the seats are too cramped and the bathrooms are terrible.

I've never had bad service on RJ, but I have had mediocre.  On my latest flight from England, however, the flight attendant did an excellent job.  She was very personable.  (If the RJ bigwigs are reading this, give her a raise.  Her name is Esraa'.)

We can't blame the government on RJ's mediocrity, as the airline has been privatized.  But here's to hoping things will improve in the next couple of years.

when i remember the worst airline i flew, it would be RJ, no competition, at all....
i remember last time i flew them was back to amman, from chicago, first the united ppl at LAX took by mistake two copies of my ticket, so this can be easily resolved bet the two airlines by fax or simply a phone call, the lady at RJ counter in chicago, simply didnot do it, she was busy with an empty flight...so i ended up talking to their boss, who happend to be an as@#$%$# and he said i had to pay a fine for losing it...it needs only a phone call and will end this!! he said i have no time and "how do i  know u didnot sell it out!!!"...i was shocked, tehn realized talking to him will end me hearing more of bad stuff, since he wasnot well mannered at all, and his looks were suspecious and dirty too, so i left his office, went back to the counter, paid my penality fine and then asked for a complaint form....guess what?? they donot have one!!!
and yeah when i boarded with my few months kid and needed some help from crew to lead my son to the seat since i had many carryons...they simply acted deaf, i requested help 3 good times and the lady kept looking at me like dumb and deaf...then finally the man behind me left his stuff and family, simply walked my son and had him seated and helped me with my stuff, he was such a nice man and frustrated from the crew i guess....and the nightmare is not over yet....the list goes on...
u know i have called their NY office a YEAR ago to have some travel reservations, the guy then, i guess pakistani, told me that he would call me in one hour with goodo ones...i called him in the next couple of days...never heard back adn i am still waiting after a year...when my husband heard that, he simply got online and got me what i need without having to talk to any human beings like that...it is awful and what makes it worse, thta iam flying them in december ONLY cuz it is the only shortest flight with min stops...allah be3eeen...
and yeah reg their closed counter, i found it really strange that all other airlines had agents at counters almost all teh time EXCEPT RJ in amsterdam last year...i was like "the flight is in 2 hours and the counter is CLOSED"...how lazy can they be...
    peace to all...
I flew with Royal Jordanian last summer on my way back to the USA and guess what? I never got my carry-on.. yes, the carry-on!
Well, I wish you have a better flight on your way back here ;)
RJ is supposedly affiliated with OneWorld now, which forces them to have certain quality standards. From Amman to New York, i actually saw some changes in quality, but back to Amman, the flight is always crap!

Well it's no surprise there! This has been going on for years. My favorite is when you call the RJ office in the US. Usually, nobody answers so you're directed straight to their answering machine. After listening to a tediously long recording, you get to the voicemail only to hear the "sorry, voicemail is full, please try calling again later" message!
The loyalty they enjoy is entirely undeserved. I'd rather take a different airline , with more stops and hassle, than to lose my luggage and be ignored, mistreated, and sassed at for flying RJ!
So are you in Amman now?
I agree with Dave that RJ is unpredictable. I flew with them several tyimes to Europe and the US. Everything from flying attendants to the plane itself to the food can be great or horrible. No consistency.

They should sell it to Southwest, that would be awesome :D

Agree with Dave and Hareega, it can be the worst and it can be the best.
but comparing to other airlines in the middle east it is still thebest except for Emirates which is number 1.

I prefer you contact them through their website, I had to wait 9 hrs in the airport because my flight was delayed, i got a nice response and an offer on a ticket, almost 50% off.

    To all travelers

Stop complaining and start acting. IF you stop buying tickets on RJ, very soon they will kiss your ass to do so. Spread the word and tell everyone who is about to take a trip with RJ NOT to do so. This is the only way for these colonial monsters to wake up. We've heard so much about RJ and are still boarding their planes.  They have the oldest planes crossing the Atlantic. Most people really believe that these planes are new. Yes they are new to Jordan, but not to flying. These planes were made in 1990. Air France retired these planes after 12 years service crossing the Atlantic to lease them to third world countries. Remember guys; USA route to RJ is the bread and butter to the whole company. These routes are financing the whole company. No other route is making money except the USA route.  You deserve better equipment and better service. When you pay a couple of hundred $$ and get the true and friendly service from other companies who knows how treat customers, you will contribute to a change in RJ.  When reservation agents cannot find customers, RJ president will realize that there are no more stupid people flying RJ plane. They will start to look for you again and treat you like a customer should be treated (Like a King). Start acting and stop complaining.

NOTE: I stopped flying RJ back in 1997. They were so bad for the early 1990s. During the 90’s I flew RJ from the USA to AMMAN only 3 times. Since 1997, I’ve been flying European carriers to AMMAN. NEVER ever will I fly RJ again?
