A soft launch with the new Google earth software includes a bunch of new enhancements most notable is the cool new Google Sky. Remember the opening scene on Google earth where the picture zoomes in on planet earth? Guess what, you can now pan, zoom and rotate images of the sky. Not only that ... but a whole lot more.

Check out this demo video for additional details

I remember similar software costing hundreds of dollars that could do way less than what Google Earth can do now. But for all fairness those used to come bundled with one of the powerful telescopes and would actuate some motors to have it point to the celestial body you see on the screen.

But anyway this would be a very valuable educational-entertainment tool

I wonder what's Microsoft's local.live response is going to be. Since they focus a lot more on maps for services not fun. And quite frankly have beaten Google Maps in just about everything recently. But with the new move from Google I think Microsoft is going to play catch up. Or power local.live with Encarta (why haven't they done this already?)

    Anyway ... Enjoy :)

    Memories....

I'm a big fan of google earth and of astronomy in general, so I'll make sure I try this.

Not sure if this is the software you were talking about, but I'm currently using (Starry nights pro plus 6). It comes on 2 DVDs and offers views of the night sky with incredible detail, along with auto updates, displaying events of interest in your location, if you have a telescope, it will auotmatically move it to whatever celestial body you wanna look at. Lists for $250, but I get the special Jordanian discount.

Yep .. it was on late at night on one of the infomercials. For a special price of three payments of 39.99 :)
(I don't like to promote one product over another out of providing equal opportunity to all) In the case of Google earth (and local.live) these are free (unless you buy the full release of earth)
lsn!!! this thing is AMAAAAAAAZING!!! I spent the last 3 hours playing on google sky.. WOW!!
(hada) o ana mn el nas elli not that interested in stars and stuff :)
    la jad.. wow!!
This is called innovation .. and that's why Google is always taking the lead...

I tried it, and found it really interesting.. I also read and tried the real life simulator built-in Google Earth. All of this reflect that Google has a vision in all what they do.
