I wish, for once, to be able to go out and not be disgusted by the things and people I see in this country. The situation in our society is becoming unbearable. Why is our ARAB society trying so hard to become just like the west? Living life with no barriers, as if everything is permitted. It’s horrible, and it’s only getting worse.

Something I’ve noticed is that 90% of the girls u see all look and dress alike!!

They all have their hair done at the salon, wear the same fashion and all hold designer bags (whether fake or original). And for some reason, they all wannabe blond!

I wish someone would tell them that it doesn’t work for everyone. They look so fake!

Whatever happened to natural beauty?  Not the mention what girls are wearing nowadays. I can’t believe parents let their girls leave the house dressed like that! (if they did leave the house dressed one way and then changed along the way, that’s a different story), but seriously, how can they walk around barely even dressed?

Why do they put their bodies on display for everyone to see? Do they not value their bodies? What amazes me is that they get upset or uncomfortable when guys comment or stare at them as they pass by. What did u expect?!

They seem to forget that they live in an Arab, Muslim society where dressing this way is inappropriate, and might be considered offensive

    Memories....

Deema... this you first post but I just LOVE IT!!! And I LOV YOU for it!!!
That’s what I'm always trying to say.. this you body, YOUR BODY, it’s not suppose to be displayed in public, respect yourself, and cover yourself for the love of god.
They think that they are being “cool” by dressing like that, my personal opinion, these girls are disparate for attention, they want to get so bad, even though they know it temporary satisfaction…
Thanks Maioush, it really bothers me that they dress and go out like that.. hope they change although i doubt it.
There are some extremes of dressing that I don't like to see in Jordan, but I don't find a problem in the way women were dressing in the 1960s in Jordan for example like in Wehdat where they used to wear skirts and nobody would care less

Q, I wish if Arabs are trying to be western. It's worse. They are trying to be Hedonistic. To be Western means to be a liberal, to espouse human rights, equality, democracy, technological and cultural progress, to die in defense of your freedoms from tyranny and occupation. That's what the west is all about. What you see in the Arab world is a miscreant culture sanctioned and nurtured by the elite as a substitute for real freedoms. basically, you can get drugged, get stoned, get fcked, any time. But ask for real freedoms like liberty, equality, democracy and see how quickly you will land in prison. that's why most of the hot-air Arab tv channels are promoting this form of perverse "modernity" are funded by the Saudis and other repressive regimes. I would love for Arabs to become western with all the trappings of western culture and values be it technological, cultural, and liberal. But that ain't gonna happen in the Arab world with the present corrupt regimes and their defenders (some of which have graced the jordanian bloggospheres)
Qwaider you managed to provoke me with this post! :)

    I totally disagree with you!

Why do you care what women wear? Isn't it their own choice to wear what they want?

and to respect your body doesnt mean to hide it! In the contrary you can celebrate it and show its beauty.

You ask, what happened to the natural beauty? then you ask to cover it? Can't you see your contradiction?

What really amazes me is the guys thinking that it is their right to harass a woman for showing a part of her body?!

and what amazes me even more having women agreeing with your post!
    The observer:
Qwaider is not the one who wrote the post :) look at the author!
And second, allow me to say, there soooooooooooooooooo many ways for the girl to “celebrate her beauty” other than displaying it in public like that!!
I agree with deema, allow me to say, hiding your body is totally different than dressing appropriately; you are mixing apples and oranges my friend, nobody ask those girls to “hide”, there is nothing wrong with self confidence, and there is nothing wrong with looking beautiful, but please… do it the right way, looking beautiful doesn’t mean wearing revealing clothes, dress cool, but for the love of god, let it be appropriate!!
Ops, I apologize for Qwaider then!

So Deema is the one wroting this?!?

It is even worse now coming from a woman!

Why do you care what other women wear?

Maioush, what does she mean with this line?
"Why do they put their bodies on display for everyone to see? Do they not value their bodies?"

What is the criteria of considering one having her body on display? and who dictates what is appropriate for a woman to wear and what is not? and why there is no mention for men? or is it appropriate for men to reveal their legs wearing shorts while not for women?
    Abed:
Thanks, I completely agree with you. But I find the scope of your argument is much more general than the specifics of Deema's post. I agree, you can't isolate the society from politics. But I believe the argument is on a personal level

    The Observer
I agree with you, women ought to know what suits them and what doesn't. But I see the value of people covering up their valuables.
    Natural beauty vs fake looks
preserve beauty by not making it available on the street for cheap

    :) I didn't write this article :) I wasn't interfering with women's rights at all :)
This article was written by a woman, and agreed upon by other women. I guess me and you are irrelevant :)

    Maioush
    Thanks

    Observer#2:
    no need to apologize :)
Interesting observations and it could be seen around the region. I don't mind people dressing up and keeping up with fashion trends.. but there are things which suit our society, climate and bodies and things which absolutely don't.

What personally bugs me the most is wearing loud make-up even at women's only condolences meetings. And don't get me started on the designer bags - considering that many of them are fake anyway!
I seem to have taken The Observer by surprise. Well, what i mean by saying "why do they put their bodies on display for everyone to see? Do they not value their bodies?" is that they wear very revealing clothes and show off their bodies. By dressing this way they invite guys to treat them as sexual objects, which we difinitely ARE NOT!! If they choose to wear such clothes, they should at least know the appropriate places to wear them to. I definitely don't think it's appropriate for girls to walk down the street dressed in such a manner.
And the reason I only address women is becuase the female body is much more attractive than the male body. Tell me, how many guys in shorts do u see being followed and verbally abused by women??
Deemco, actually if you ask women comfortable of stating their sexuality, you would find that male body is not less attractive than female body. The question is "it is attractive to whom?"

People also differ in the way they are attracted themselves. For instance my attraction for women can be stronger than another man. It is a relative matter.

No matter what a person wears, it doesnt justify other people to harass them sexually.
