I never thought there would EVER be any good news on this. But apparently there is. The highest Shiite cleric in Lebanon (Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah) has described the practice as, Disgusting. Blaming it on old and archaic cultural practices.

I've said this a million times before. the whole honor killing stink is Unislamic. The Islamic law is against it and discourages it in every possible way. Even if adultery is proven (by four witnesses, who witness the act, and pass the a thread between the two that doesn't pass) In other words, close to impossible to prove. Only then it's punishable by death for BOTH married Men and Women. So this whole practice against women in many places in the middle east is one of the worst forms of oppression there is

    +via Catholic Sunni Shia

Women are being sacrificed at the alter of custom, tribal prejudice and family honor. If you're looking for the Islamic law on the punishment of adultery for unmarried men and women. You will see that it's clearly: NOT DEATH!

So when people take it upon themselves to be more strict than the law they are living under. Then there's something wrong here. And needs to be stopped

I don't say that crimes of passion shouldn't exist. But premeditated murder NEEDS to go! It must be stopped at any and all costs. Stricter laws for these in-family premeditated murders must be established. The whole society needs to be reconditioned to understand that it's NOT OK, it's NOT revenging for the family's honor and it's NOT an honorable act

The precedent that the Ayatollah is pioneering is something that I hope will continue around the rest of the Arab and Islamic world. the more the religious figures adopt this, the more people will follow. And more lives will be saved from a worthless death.

Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, I salute you, and applaud your move!

    Memories....

Finally, someone is doing something about it! Good to know!
I wonder why do I have the feeling that Shiit Muslims are more progressive than Sunni? They do have their share of weird stuff but appear to be more liberal on a number of fronts. They debate the Sa7abeh (sometimes inaccurately), the have Pleasure marriage and now they ban honor killings. What's next? Pray one rak3a and the second one is free! J/k
