As you know, I'm involved in the technical side of hiring great talent. So one guy comes, wow's everyone including me with the depth and breadth, and like a kid who throws a tantrum at the candy isle in the grocery store. I was shouting, I want him on my team.. I want him on my team!

And the other manager responds, but he wasn't wearing a tie! I flame-threw a look up and down his stupid posture, I was at loss of words to describe this superficial look!

So I respond with something like, he's awesome! He solved this, he solved that, he aced this, he even invented a new way to do x, y and z that is more efficient AND costs less! This guy would be a super star, a rocket scientist among earth worms!

So Mr Stupid answers, but he was wearing jeans to the interview! I was hanging very loosely at the end of my rope, so I justified. This is the culture he comes from. These are deep technical people and they don't mind wearing slippers to work as long as the work gets done.

And Mr Stupid throws another, remark... His cellphone rang during the interview, it was on vibrate. And that is non-professional and disrespectful. Ghrrrrr! It took every muscle in my body to restrain my self from beating the hell out of Mr Stupid for that remark. And I replied, I had 2 phone calls, 3 people knock my door, and barging in in the middle of the interview to poison the well and you are not accepting that the guy "god forbids" might have the cell phone on for emergency like, his wife is about to deliver. Or his kid is undergoing an operation. Or whatever?! I don't see you turn off your cell phone in meetings. I should start taking offence to that!

I'm pissed off with the likes of Mr Stupid who know absolutely nothing about the industry other than how to sell things. Granted, he's got a big and very important job. But don't shutdown my next einstein-in-the-making because of your trivialities. He's not trying to sell me anything but his talent. And if I am stupid enough to let a fantastic opportunity go just because "he's not wearing a tie" then I wouldn't accept a single prototype or emerging ideas that are still rough around the edges!

I'm so happy that people in the diamond business don't value diamonds by their final looks. If you see how diamonds look before they're polished, you'll be amazed how people bothered to even polish them!

If you're hiring for a TV presenter, fine take all these things into consideration. But if he's on the radio, then who gives a damn what color is his shorts!

True that Qwaider, it shouldn't have anything to do how the guy/girl looks, especially if he's not going to interact with clients vis-a-vis.

And did you mean he was wearing *jeans*, not genes? :P
God... reminds me of a story of my freind who was honestly told he was not hired because he is a graduate of a public school! gross!

I think that people are becoming too relaxed for interviews with their dress.  It's an opportunity to make a first lasting impression that you take things seriously and are a professional.  Even for internal candidates that you know well, I think it says a lot when someone comes dressed in a suit to the interview.  What if he is to meet with potential clients or customers at some point?  Or a visit from the executives is expected and he will be discussing his work.  Or he's giving a presentation in front of stockholders?  Would you want him wearing that?  Or would you want to be the one to tell him he has to "dress up"...becuase he usual clothes are not suitable?

Thanks buddy, I fixed it

Lovely seeing you here again. This same think happens to many people all over the world. Great talent is lost because we care about trivialities more than we care about the real content

    Luai
I completely agree with you IF the job is forward facing the customers/clients...etc. But when it's a technical position where he will likely not see the light of sun for years, then there really is no need for an "elegant" dresser and what is needed is a good thinker

So your a Kamboytarji...but what field?

I thought you were supposed to hire only girls, and the good looking ones, right?

It's clear your friend is afraid that this young dude would take his place

that is just sad! i hope Mr stupid does not get his way..
Well I hope Mr. Stupid is not reading this, because he might hate you for it :D

I think HR people who send the letters to invite candidates for interviews should tell them how to dress if it's important. When I interviewed where I work, I didn't go wearing a tie, but I was still told by the HR lady in a lighthearted conversation that I came overdressed.
OMG don't get me started on that. My husband once did not get the job , and he heard through the grapevine, because he was wearing a suit but no tie... can you believe that? takhalof wallah .. 3anjad..

There are MR stupid’s everywhere :S. dinosaurs man dinosaurs .
    is Mr stupid an Arab?

a former strategic management professor of mine wore jeans and rode his bicycle to class. he is a graduate of Harvard and holds a PhD from Boston college, and used to be the head of the Financial Times' office in Tokyo, Japan.

Imagine how this professor would be perceived by Mr. Stupid...
