You know, people say that they're busy at times. And I completely understand. Then comes a time when the very definition of being busy is completely changed! When you get to a level where you're so busy that, you REALLY don't have time to shave, scratch your head or even think. It gets so hard to deal with people at this stage. Everyone is requesting no demanding their percentage of your time and you just don't have it!
I remember being bored. I remember days and nights that I literally had hours to "kill" because I had nothing to do. But no more! I'm going through times where every second means things to do and people to see, documents to write, papers to review, "kids to baby sit" (aka people management). Reports to write, status to fill ...
I used to dread Mondays because they're the beginning of a work week. Then came the time that by the time I realize the week has started, it is about to end!
It's well known that the most successful people are the people who managed to keep their head above water when they were faced with such challenges. And we able to continue to see the big picture instead of getting consumed by the little details. But without care to the details there's no quality. Of course, it doesn't help when people at work dump three teams on your head to babysit.
Every way I look at it, it appears that I will need 6 of me to finish my work ONLY, not to mention any social obligations I have! I find my self pushed to 560% over-utilization. So I think, how in the world am I going to handle all of this. And still manage to have-a-life!?
If I could just discover a formula to help make everything fall in place! Stream line or automate things, I guess I have few options here....
- Quit! (Of course this is a non-solution, this is like committing suicide)
- Find another Job (good, but needs resources to find, and go through the notions)
- Clone myself (probably have some long term effects) [Aka Parallelization]
- Ask for less work (And get the negative attitude award of the year)
- (since Parallelization is out of the question for at least few years). Maybe I can outsource myself to India? [I like this idea, but can I communicate myself well across geographic, social, timezone issues?]
- Organize my time! (much easier said than done, I'm still looking for that formula)
- Sleep even less!
My analytical, problem solving brain just can't stop thinking of solutions to these problems!
On a brighter note, I stood in a room filled with "the worlds brightest minds" today, and bullshitted my way into getting them to accept something that would NEVER fly! And you know what? I succeeded. I'm not sure I am happy or sad about that to tell you the truth! I guess my old qwaiderization comes to me here, "it's not what you say, it's how you argue it"
Memories....
:) yeh i agree with saned, do not do #7...:) you will not be able to accomplish much as a zombie eh?
As for work on Vacations, I had a bad review once because I wasn't "working" during my vacation! It was hilarious! (and caused that manager to get a few nasty remarks)
