A while ago I was explaining to the daughter of one of a university professors how we'll all have what I call "Technological Aids" that would help us do things with our life. Your phone, MP3 player, PDA, GPS and all other little gadgets will find their way to be integrated, and minaturized to the point that ......

They will fit on a single chip that will end up being implanted under your skin

Someone is going to discover a way to extract energy from the human body to power the device. And voila. You will be walking encyclopedia, with a 24/7 connection to the Internet to get all you news, weather, sorts, movies, traffic condition...etc all straight to that chip implanted on your body.

If you pay attention, this process has already started, millions of parents are tagging their kids and pets with RFID which is a little chip under the skin to help them identify their kids if they get lost, kidnapped or worse.

The US Army also has plans to implant RFID's under the soldier's skin, just in case something happens and they couldn't be identified.

Imagine, a device you never have to charge. You communicate directly through a jawbone microphone/earpiece, you can even communicate in complete silence. And you have all your Email, addresses, phone numbers, appointments ...etc ...etc ...etc all right there, on that chip inside your skull. You'll probably be able to take digital pictures of your favorite moments, and record memorable videos and speeches!

Best part, you probably can download all this cool stuff, and share it with loved ones, or maybe just beam it from your head to someone else's head, even without saying a word!

Far fetched? I think not! It's going to happen, weather we like it or not. We're going to require the assistance of cybernetics to achieve our next evolution and unlock human's next evolutionary jump!

Just think about it, enhanced hearing, enhanced vision, instant replay of everything you sea or hear. Non-vocal communication at millions of times faster than voice, complete encyclopedias, audio and video libraries. In addition to everything you can do online now from email, chat, web browse and more ... No screen, no wires ... just a tiny chip...

It's going to happen. It's not the matter of "IF" ... it's the matter of when!

I hope my good professor and her daughter read this. This might be futuristic, but it's really closer than we think...

What do you think? Would you sign up to get chipped?

    Memories....

I did some research about the RFID technology a couple of years ago, the problem was its cost..Wal mart ivested heavily in this, they will eleminate cashiers and plenty of jobs by applying this tech, you will get your stuff in your cart, walk out the store, and they will charge you automatically on the credit card, the stuff that you bought will be subtracted from the inventory, and when they reach a threshold and order will be sent to the manufacurer, while shelvers will be shelving items...
Employers will be able to monitor you  more closely, they will be able to count how many times you went to the washroom, and who you were talking to, this rised the privacy issue, but this will be no problem in jordan:)
    I love this stuff!!
I did some research on the RFID tech a couple years ago, wal mart invested heavily in the R&D, they are trying to insert a ship in every item, by doing so, they will save lots of labor, you will put your items in the cart, get out the door, sencors will calculate your total and charge your credit card, the system then automatically updates the inventory and trigger shelvers to add items, and the count reaches a threshold and order will be sent to the manuafacturar, no large inventory needed, it will all be a seem less chain of events..
Another intersting thing was that employesr will be able to tarck theri employees and even know how much time they spent in the washroom and who ther were talking to, of course this raises the privacy issue, but this should be no problem in jordan:D
I love this stuff!!Technology is just fascinating....
I updated with a link to an older article I wrote about Human tagging, check it out
It is not our choice anymore, my searchs is owned by google, they know my IP, they know my address, they know what I googled, they will build a profile for each and everyone of us, one of my professors was working on a system for the home land security that filters each and every e-mail sent on the web, they monitor the waves in the air, they look for patterns. Another one of my professors is one of the founding fathers of the Web mining, it is just amazing what they do!!
ahh, i would love it...not to be tagged personally, but to have this great technology under our skins...literally!! I am sure it will have its positive and negative consequences but this is how it is with everything...i love the idea. i hope it goes in effect during my lifetime! does this mean that people would become smarter?? I doubt it!

With my luck, I'd probably be obsolete in no time.

"or maybe just beam it from your head" .. mmmm.. can I use my built-in Antenna !! ..
Dos it require a life time subscriber agreement, how you see voice and data coverage on you,r street, neighborhood and oll the olaces that matter to you before you buy, using the interactive power network coverage tool, and are they olso give you 1 year to try risk free.
    Mohannad,
Yes I agree, privacy is going to be the next big issues to raise concerns. In the EU there are already laws and regulations that preserve person's identity even when using Email or online services. They're required by the law not to store or maintain tabs on anyone without a court order.
Unfortunately, this is still not the case in the US who are more realistic at the moment in the government regulations since the technology is still not there

In the case of Google, the US government has mandated that Google comply and cooperate with them regarding data mining and that they open all their system to governmental inspection. Which they often do by the way. But the public is probably unaware of it yet.

In the future, RFID is one method of identifying people. On the fly retinal scans would probably be a common thing.

    Summer
Yeah :) we will all enjoy a little euphoria related to the excess surge of knowledge a amazingly fast transfer of knowledge, let alone LESS gadgets in our pockets.

Would this make people smarter? Good question. I doubt it too, but they will definitely have more knowledge at their fingertips and much higher bandwidth to consume it, not that the eyes, ears are out of the picture and information is being poured directly in their brains. I guess the next question is, are we going to be able to handle this volume!!?

    Dave,
Over the air upgrades, and enhancements will keep you up to date. Besides, Bet they're going to make upgrading as easy as upgrading from Vista to Mac OS :)

    Anas
Definitely will have antennas to help pick up and transmit information.

    Hamede
I'm not in the know about how it's going to be exploited by the communications giants of the time. But I assure you, it will not be free. Coverage is going to probably be through the use of low earth orbiting satellites with a big range of frequencies to support all the situations.
Check books by Ray Kurzweil. Here's an interesting lecture by him:
    http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/38

    his site:
    http://www.kurzweilai.net

He thinks that in 100 years, people will mainly live in virtual worlds - multiple ones at the same time.

I'm skeptic of memory integration between computers & humans. I think the problem is harder than scientists today think.

I think it'd be scary. A built in big brother system. The end of whatever is left of privacy as we know it.
    Arrabi
Man, I've been fascinated by Kurzweil's work since the introduction of those extremely realistic piano's that they made. They're amazing!
I'm sure going to check it out

Why is it that hard you think? couple of days ago, scientists were successfully able to graft a nerve from a special kind of Silk. Couple of years ago, the first IC to be implanted in a human was made. And a year ago, an artificial eye enabled a blind man to start seeing (things, it's still not vision capable, but he see's what can be considered light)
So if we're able to interface with the nerves, what would be next? :)

    Whisperer...
Thanks for the advice, I'll think about it ... I really appreciate your candor. and I agree with you

    انونيموس
It is scary, but ... privacy is one of the first things to suffer with advanced technology .... it will happen sooner or later
