At the ER

I woke up yesterday very early, unable to breath. My chest was so tight, and it was so painful to draw in a breath. So painful, and so noisy. The wheezes can be heard out loud. I started to panic since my oxygen depraved mind started to play, "what if" scenarios. And I decide to keep my cell phone close just in case it really got worse. And it started to get worse indeed!

I'm not usually one of the people who jump to go to the Doctor at the first sign of trouble. I just try to wait it out. But this time it was different.

I don't think at any stage in my whole life I have come this close to a brush with death. Just breathing was a challenge so great and so painful that I really had to put a lot of effort into it.

What's going on my mind asks my body. Which is now aching. All I hear back is "PAIN" excruciating pain trying to breath! And that noisy loud noise associated with wheezes. Unbelievably loud. Signaling more pain is on the way.

3 hours later, the clinique was open, I called, and the nurse tried to brush me off with "the doctor is busy", but I insisted, and my good doctor, may god bless her answered, "Ha ya Samer, Izzayyak" (She's Egyptian-American). So I explain and she manages to squeeze me into her tight schedule for the day. "Are you sure you can drive"?. I said yes. But I really shouldn't have

Somehow, I got to the clinique. Few minutes later she was listening to the wheezes. "We need to take you to the ER". I was shocked. Yes, I was in a lot of pain but why! She's not sure, it might be a big number of things. "We need an X-Ray", meanwhile, she brought this little contraption that hooks up to all sort of hoses and stuff and told me to breath into it.

Frankly, it felt like I'm blowing through a hookah (Argeeleh), and I started to feel immediate improvement. Few minutes later she has prepared everything with the ER at a nearby hospital, but she insisted. "I don't want you to drive", "Call a friend". So I did, and thank god for good friends. I was there in no time

If anyone has these delusions about ER in America being similar to that TV Show, they are absolutely mistaken. The nurses are MEAN! So mean, they shout, the make it absolutely CLEAR that anyone protesting or asking for help is "Stopping them from getting their work done". They're completely cold.

Anyway, couple of hours of waiting, then I get to go to a corridor where I sit for the next 2 hours. Yes, in the corridor, no room. Nothing. They took an X-RAY of my chest (and goddamn it they didn't even give me that lead skirt to cover my "valuables"). The "nice" nurses insisted on me wearing a mask so I complied and was looking like a Man in Khimar for the rest of day. (God it's so hard to keep those on for so long) and they scare kids.

Few hours in the corridor of the ER Section of one of the rather prestigious hospitals, are just really not my idea of health care (when you know that I pay close to thousand dollars for medical insurance a month, you'll know why this is really not acceptable)

So anyway, they ruled out that I have a stroke, pneumonia and a bunch of other rather nasty health problems and it came down to Asthma, but I have no history of Asthma! Anyway, they prescribed an inhaler and now I am breathing again. But it was one hell of day!

I went to the doctor at 9 AM, arrived home at 5 PM. (It takes the pharmacy 25 minutes to fill a prescription, 25 MINUTES for an inhaler they're going to grab from the shelf and hand to me). It was 5, and I was feeling fine, I had scheduled to watch a movie with my good friend Albert. So I went out to the movie :), With the mask on, and the hospital name-tag bracelet on. It was interesting to see people's reactions. They're fine with someone with a million tattoos and a million piercings but found it odd that someone has a face-mask on!

So here I am again, alive... Thank god... Now the hunt begins, how, and why did this happen.... This was one of the many issues that face single people in the US, NO BODY cares about you. You could die and no one would even know! Thank god for good friends

Qwaider, I am so sorry! Salatak, ya ibni! Yes, ER is quite different from reality, just like all TV...just try going to emergency in Los Angeles on a Friday night, you'll see people dying of bullet wounds and the same mean nurses.

That is the sad state of singles in the US - I remember driving myself to the ER when I was single once. But that is where the faith community kicks in...aren't you connected to a mosque there?
Salamtak Samer, thank God for good friends indeed, you seem to have great friends.

I hope you haven’t developed Asthma for good and also like Summer I say good that you stopped smoking, see this as an incentive not to go back to smoking.
Salamtak man, good to have good friends.
its starts with an inhaler in one hand and ends with a cane in the other, you are aging man lol

    now seriously

im really sorry for what happened to you, and i cant imagine if you didnt stop smoking a month ago what exactly would've happen to you, scary the thought of not being able to breath...anyway i hope this is an eye opening for you and others to take more care of their selves

God bless, take care and salamtak
el 7amdella 3ala salamtak ya samer.. you scared us walahi...

Salamtak Sam..I hope this will never happen again. I can imagine the reaction of your parents if they know what happened..

    salamtak
    salamat,
asthma can cause chest pain but it causes more shortness of breath and wheezing rather than chets pain, and it cannot be disgnosed with a chest x-ray or physcial exam you need a special test where you puff into a tube (pulmonary function test) to confirm the diagnosis.
    check again with your PCP
and if you ever get chest pain never wait for the clinic to open just call 911 immediately

oh boy, oh boy!! and i thought i went through ER alone...u know u said exactly how i felt inside, i went last sunday to the ER, and it was same MEAN nurses...unbelievable....can u imagine, i asked my husband to stay with my son at home (took my sone in morning to see his doctor and she told me that there is a virus in the air that is causing viral and asthmatic infection in kids especially)and decided to call an ambulance to take me to the hospital...same thing...couldnot breath...my husband was worried and scared to let me go onmy own but i did cuz of mo's health...better to keep mo safe and way from crazy ppl at ER on weekend and i was right...i actually faited twice and the mean nurse was "i just checked ur vitals  a while ago (like an hour ago) and u were fine!!"....what is wrong now...why r u fainting???? i was like "u tell me!!!"....stupid nurse, gave me 3 tylanoles for my 101F fever with juust a sip of water!!! u can imagine what that would do to ur body...."Dehydration" and no fluids or IV....can u believe her...and yeah i fainted...so what?? my body was completely dry from fluids...and yeah forgot to mention that no doctor showed up when i fainted!!! May allah bless doctors in amman...they run to save ur life...at least doctors i deal with....
this ER show...has nothing to do with real ER here...i was there 10am till 4 pm....no water at all...and then when discharged...the nurse not a doctor came over and told me i was fine...just bronchitis!!!
i tried to see a doctor afterwards to see why i fainted like that...she was "interesting!!! but i have no answer why it happend this way to u!!" it is so funny...cuz that is why i went to see a doctor!!! yeah what made this worse that only 4 weeks ago i went in fever big time and they treated me with 4 types of antiboitic....and the diagnosis turned to be wrong, since results came AFTER i was done with medication showed that i had nothing of what they claimed i had....!!!CRAZY DOCTORS....and u pay a fortune for stupid ppl to treat u!!! why do we have to pay for insurance...have no clue...
yeah maioush, it takes a pharmacist a year to pack and fill this medication for u...i was waiting for my son's inhaler the other day, thinking he will simply pick it up from the shelf and would give to me...he was "noway...u have to wait for 25 mnts at least till i fill it in!!!" i was like "it is already ready....it is not like u r inventing it!!"....donot let me start by saying they filled the wrong medicine for my son the other day...thank god i read the name and i am involved with his doctors when prescribing a medicine for him...other wise god knows what would have happned to him...when the pharmacist found out that they made a mistake ONLY then they were and rushing preparing his right medicine....so plz maioush....it is not that easy to deal with doctors/nurses or pharmacists....
u pay a fortune for insurance and nothing in return!!!!
salamtak samer...i know what u have been through...especially being alone there... i was scared to die in the ER alone with my husbnad and son in the house...
yeah it is hard to be single in the states...tried it b4...not easy at all...allah ye7fazak we ye3afeek inshalla....now u have to get married, dear!!!
sorry for the long post but u touched a nerve in me....wallahi...
Thank you all, I'm overwhelmed really and touched
