This was a good relaxing mellow weekend in general. The highlights, 2 good movies, and one interesting book reading. "The 300" was such a great movie. Same goes for the Korean movie "The Host" and a nice book by Mohja Kahf, "The girl in the Tangerine scarf". If you don't know Mohja she's one of the writers on Muslim Wake up site

    kahf

Mohja is such an outspoken Muslim Feminist that has such a captivating character and very eloquent style, probably sharpened by years of tutoring in universities around the US and the word. Born for Syrian parents, raised in Indiana, and currently a professor at the University of Arkansas, Mohja has such amazing view of both colliding worlds.

I didn't read the story yet, but I picked up a copy of her book (now, my author signed copy). I have been following up on the stories on Muslim wake site. Some are very intriguing and some are sometimes shocking. But sometimes we need such shock to defibrillate our flat lining brains.

The next event this weekend was watching the Korean movie "The Host" which is a scifi movie about a Giant creature killing people in the heart of Korea, and possibly unstoppable.

    the host

I was so impressed with the Korean movie industry to say the least. They have REALLY come a long way. It's mature on the dramatic level, the action level and is such a great story telling experience.

I would give this one an 9/10 on the Qwaider Scale  for effort and the amazing shock it gave me.

Now Last but not least, the fantastic epic movie, "The 300", when talks about the story of the 300 Spartans fighting 1 Million of the finest Xerxes armies in the battle of Thermopylae.

    300

The movie is so huge, so bombastic, so grand that it WILL blow your mind away, Not only that, it most definitely redefine the bar for WOW in the movies so high, that it will be years before it's broken again

Ever seen those amazing TV commercials that last 30 seconds, and pack a lifetime worth of magic and amazement? Take that, and spread it every single second of this movie to know how massively amazing this movie is ... It's definitely a must see. And worthy of an academy award for sure.

Now with that said, I do have my doubts about the story and how it ended up being "If you're not white, you're evil", "If your not perfect in body, then you're evil", and finally "If you're not Spartan, then you're not a man". I think the movie is offensive to Everyone who doesn't look white, with blue eyes and an Irish accent. Portraying the world as a set of mystic thieves riddled with every single vice in the world

So on one had you have the Spartans, protecting "Peace, Justice, Democracy, Freedom (rings a bell?)" and on the other the Persian army (or shall we say, the armies of all of Asia), Fighting to oppress women, and to enslave the whole race. Not only that they want to steal their riches and destroy their moral high-grounds and philosophy.

It's good to have shown how the spartan "Sages" have been a bunch of perverted older men keeping a young virgin in their captivity for their pleasure. She has to be the most beautiful in all of the lands. So they can get their sick pleasure. They also didn't mention anything about their slaves, but casually showed them.

That's basically my major takes on the movie, but it was despite all of that so spectacular that it's really worthy of the 8.5/10 on the Qwaider scale that I'm going to give it

That was 3 posts in one :)

You are right about Prof. Kahf. She really has such an amazing character. As you mentioned, she has deep insight on the two worlds(Arab and American) and how they work together in a single character, especially since they both formulate her. She skillfully combines them in one; her novel reflects that. By the way, I’ve taken several courses with her, and I personally admire her ;)
Man... you were active this weekend...
