I was talking to a very good respectable friend of mine when she expressed resentment that she's being considered a pretty face. And only a pretty face. While her ideas and talent mean nothing. And that people don't take her seriously because of that

I personally have a different opinion about this. I think there are two ways to present an issue. Someone being "pretty" is irrelevant. But as it turns out it might not be such a great thing after all

Being pretty give the person the advantage of acceptance even before opening their mouths. It's used all over the media and in commercials.

So people do pay attention, at least long enough to force them to take you seriously. Prove that you're not just a pretty face, by taking this opportunity and presenting your fantastic ideas. And then they will take their words back and think of you as more, way more than just a pretty face!

It's a fact, intelligence intimidates people, while beauty puts them at ease. But ultimately good ideas attract their own allure and audience regardless of the person and that's the bottom line

I say, if someone is pretty, good for them ... If they're not ... well they better have some pretty darn good ideas ...

And I agree. Having both beauty and brains never killed anyone :)

what's more important than a pretty face.. the ability to enter people's hearts easily. One's CHARM.

If it exists then this would be the passport for an easier interview, a quick notice, or getting more attention to have his ideas/ thoughts heared!

But people have a wrong impression in general regarding this issue, some of them when they see a blonde for example they immediately think she's not smart enuogh (this would be the first impression) :S
a pretty dull face with no aura is useless.. charisma comes from within and beauty (and sexiness also my personal opinion) is majorly a mentality..

and true, ppl (and especially men) are scared of intelligent (and independant) women! donno why tho, it shud be a bonus not a curse :-/
True intelligence over powers the pretty face, people see the pretty face first but as you have time to talk things shift towards substance rather than looks.

And intelligent people have a sparkle in their eyes that is so distinct and they have a charm of their own, confidence and the way you carry your self gives as well a strong first impression and catches the eye.

I once had a very beautiful friend... oncewe were talking about love, and how shallow and non-lasting it is when it depends on beauty ONLY. Actually, she tatedthat she invies those whoare not ugly but have average beauty rather than charming extreme beauty, as they have a chance to get a love based on ideals and appreciation of the real person rather than beuty...
and yes! although people who know her closely understand that she has an outstanding mind, those who see her for the first time concentrate on nothing but her beauty! And that is really bothering!

"because pretty women never feel inequality, in fact, they get treated even better than men!"
That's your quote from the feminists and neo-something (I can't remember the exact title) post.
I almost commented then, but I just couldn't formulate my thoughts well enough, but the post today is sort of what I wanted to say. Pretty woment DO feel unequal at times. If people only see you as pretty or thin (which here in the US is so often associated with pretty), then what happens if that changes? I will admit right now, to all of the blogosphere that I worry sometimes that I might gain weight or get ugly. And if you saw me, you'd never have a clue. Also, people don't mean to, but they say some pretty rude things to thin women. I can't tell you the times, I've had someone say something a little rude to me b/c I'm thin (eg- "What could you possibly have to worry about! Look at you"). These same people might not say something to a fatter person's face, but they feel ok to say it to mine. OK, so I need to stop complaining, but thanks for clearing up, that sometimes people just wish to be judged for the content of their character and not anything outward. Afterall, I was taught that beauty is most beautiful when it describes your personality, not outward appearance.
    Hala:
Absolutely, and I add, a little beauty is always preferred to brains.

    Dima:
Yes Dima, that is true, charm, charisma, all sort of positive feeling emotions. A pretty face, or proper dress will assist in establishing the first impression, and allows the person's mind to shine next

    Verbal Alchemy:
And I agree, everything comes from within. But there are these physical limits of the speed of light and the speed of sound+the speed of thought which are far slower.

Our external image is also a form of communication. One that might speak volumes at times. without saying a single word.... More on this later :)

    Tamara:
That is so true, I view it as intelligence having it's speed limitation while vision can make a statement way before the person opens their mouth

    Naryat:
I understand that people who have it, sometimes feel upset about some issues. But I doubt any one of them would give it up. Especially if they're self aware of it. That's always their way of showing humility. (complaining how hard it is) When in fact, it has opened so many doors for them.

As for love, as many people have said, external sparkle might get you through the first few days, but if there was no substance.. Then forget it

    Emily:
Welcome back, it's been a while.
If you read my words carefully, you'll notice that I didn't deviate from my original conclusion. Pretty people do have it come to them easily while less fortunate have to work harder. (Or as Eddie Murphy puts it, "You have to read two books for every pound that you gain")

I've heard people say worse stuff to skinny ladies. A friend of mine (who wasn't really skinny) Was referred to as "Skinny White B***". And every so often someone will say "You have nothing to worry about, look at you!" as a form of compliment. ESPECIALLY when thin girls nag about how they are really stressing to finish then 2Oz salad and how "Stuffed" they feel :)

I don't like to look at people as thin and fat, I prefer to view them as pretty on the inside or not. That's what counts.... But it takes a while to get to see the inside which brings us back to this subject. "External beauty, however fake, travels faster than inner beauty - Qwaiderization". And that's why the advertising industry uses pretty people, because "they don't have time to show you the inner beauty"

Yeah, people have made worse comments to me; I just didn't list them, but nothing as bad as what was said to your friend!
I think that, yes, there are times when being pretty is an advantage. However, there are also times that people are intimidated by beauty. I see it w/my students sometimes. The prettiest girl might be outcasted because the others get jealous of her. Which is why it is so important to look at the heart of a person, which does take longer. Maybe I should write about this subject... I seem to have really long comments!
Emily, maybe you should. not because you have long comments, but because you do have a different twist on it
LOL@ "I say, if someone is pretty, good for them ... If they're not ... well they better have some pretty darn good ideas ..."

I think pretty is the icing on the cake, or the cherry on top.

It irritates me a little how pretty women say, poor me I am so pretty, nobody is taking me seriously, blah blah blah, shucks,  just enjoy it people, enjoy it because soon, when you get old and wrinkly you will wish that you wee pretty again (not that wrinkly is not pretty, I am just giving an example).

Well , I am pretty and I LVOE IT ( keef bas iltawado3?)
    That's the spirit 7aki ... Enjoy what you have ... !
