I was watching an interesting documentary while I was waiting for my flight this weekend. And it was discussing the phenomena called "Cutting" that some inmates at Wabash (Maximum security prison). For a few seconds I was thinking to my self, so that's where my tax dollars go? Then later one, I thought, "Why bother!!?". Here's why

I know many have said, that "No one is beyond redemption". But I find that as a complete and utter delusion.

Some people are a lost cause, a waste of time and money and better yet, they ENJOY doing this, this is what kills me. They ENJOY being the social pests that they are, they enjoy being a liability to the society. Not because they really can't cope, but because they're mentally ill.

I think, some mentally deranged people are similar to terminally ill people. But at least, terminally ill people try to seek out help, these people don't!

    So What is "Cutting"?

Cutting: Self Injury (SI) or Self-harm (SH) is deliberate injury inflicted by a person upon his or her own body. Some scholars use more technical definitions related to specific aspects of this behavior. These acts may be aimed at relieving otherwise unbearable emotions, sensations of unreality and numbness. Self-injury is generally considered a social taboo.

Some of the inmates were using tools and box cutters, knives, screwdrivers and even paper to cut themselves. Some would cut themselves so deep the bone would show.

Even worse, they would cut themselves in a zigzag double cuts so that the surgeons can sew them up. That's very disturbing, just imagine doing it to your own self

Some people say that these are sick people and are in need of a treatment. I would understand if any one of them seeks this treatment, but in these cases of self euthanasia, I think, better them than the gene pool. If someone is so bent on hating their own self and their own skin and is repeatedly attempting to hurt themselves, I say, just let them go ahead and do it! Leave them, if they want to die, let them die!

Would I have the same feelings if it was someone I care about or love that is doing all of this? Maybe, I really don't know. I would try councelling them to a point but after that. They're on their own.

I think, there will come a time in the human future, when the population of people on Earth is going to far exceed the resources. And people will be encouraged to euthanize. Not only that, but these cases will be welcome and if these people want to be put down, they're put down. We're going to be so busy as a civilization to look back. We will be less tolerant, and less willing to help. I think at some point anything that will generate less humans will become a good thing. It will be a very dark and scary vision of the future. And the only way out will be the expansion outward from this planet to other planets and galaxies and creation of permanent human settlements on other worlds

So to conclude, back to the original idea. If someone is really convinced that they need to hurt themselves. I think we should let them. This is the point I'm getting to. Let them, and don't interfere with them afterwards. If they want to perform self surgery, let them ..  If this is going to help them psychologically, then good. If not and they die. That's one less social liability off my tax dollars!

    Memories....

Actually Qwaider I have so much to say about this issue, allow me to disagree with you in this matter.
My friend… as for inmates, believe me they have so many reasons to do that to them selves, I will need one looooooong post to explain it, but believe it or not, 50% if not more hurt themselves so they can survive.
I know you might say “Why bother” “let them do it” “That's one less social liability off my tax dollars!” but for people who works in the health field like me, they are humans and they have all the right to be treated like any other person, and as you said, wouldn’t you do it, if it was someone you really care about?? (now I’m touching the racism matter you dicussed earlier) but let me just stop right here before this post gets any longer. :)
When everything has failed, and counseling has reached a dead end. Wouldn't these people be better off as they wished? Dead?
I'm not saying they are not people, I'm not saying they're not human, and I'm not saying deny them health-care (if they seek it, or if they're incapable of deciding) but if they can decide ... let them do whatever they want... allow them to hurt themselves to death! They're only doing this because they enjoy the attention. If they knew they won't be getting any attention, some wouldn't do it ...

I’m not sure about everything you said in this post, with the stuff about what the future is going to look like on the long term… etc, but I just want to make a general statement: the mentally ill can not be responsible for making their own decision of ending their own life, they are mentally ill.
I’m not going to argue about the fact that they look for attention, we are human being, this is out nature, and even normal people look for it, not only people with mental problems.
Now some people are really sick and they don’t know what they are doing, they don’t choose to hurt themselves, they just do, and that’s exactly why they need help.
“wa laysa 3ala el majnoone 7araj” so el jnoon mawjood”, now beside treating the physical injuries, people treat the mental issues as well.. that’s number 1
number 2, as I said, some of these inmates are FORCED to hurt themselves in able to survive, the gangsters in prisons are a huge problem, if you don’t belong to any of them, YOU’RE DEAD, and for those people with small felonies don’t belong to any of those gangs, so they are dead no matter they do, and do you know what they do? They hurt themselves, and voila… you’re a suicide, in the hospital, under maximum security, and above all that, you got a guarantee you’ll be alive until they transfer to somewhere else, and you will always be under security.. It’s sad, but that’s what’s happening…
Q, yes some people are beyond redemption, but in many cases no one gave a damn any way to treat them in a professional manner, what kind of a therapist do you think inmates have access to ? besides even if they are beyond redemption they are human and we have the responsibility no matter what.

And as for population over flow, I think wars took care of that and will continue to do so in the future
The failures of the system although could be considered a justification, are not the only reason some people do it.

These are not just mentally ill, they are usually murderers, rapists, career criminals we're talking about here. All others will seek assistance, but these don't. They're proud of it. They enjoy it .. All I'm saying is allow them to enjoy it to it's conclusion!

S.N... The future has a lot in store for all of us, some will be good, some might not be as good ...
The known fact is that we're running out of resources on this planet and unless we do something about it, we might be under very tough decisions.
I don’t want to sound like I’ defending these people, I agree with you, they are not the best people ever, I’m not talking about there mistakes, they’ve been punished for that already by being in prison, so that has been taking care of , why you want to punish them again, I’m talking about humanity Qwaider, they are sick, they have the right to be treated, it’s a matter of principle my friend, I admit that CDC system suck ,and that takes part of the blame, and a big part too, but… if I want to look at it the way you are explaining it, then we will never give meds for HIV patients unless they got it by medical mistake (transferring blood or so), if they got it through random sex, then they have no right to be treated right? Just think about it…
No wrong. I didn't suggest that people who have any medical conditions not to be treated.
What I am saying is that if someone is INSISTING on hurting themselves. Then just let them!

Everyone else will normally seek help and treatment. And not hurt themselves

I have to admit it's a weak argument that I am making here, and would sympathize with the human eventually. But sometimes I just wish we could be cold hearted and just let them die

Whew, this is a tough one. I personally believe NO ONE is beyond redemption, especially if they have a praying teta.

Self harm is prevalent among girls who were victims of childhood sexual abuse as well. It is a mechanism to be able to FEEL something other than numbness. For one who has stifled their feelings in order to survive the disorder of a world where those mean to protect were their abusers, it is a way to feel human again.

It is a physical outlet for pain in the form of blood. I have a friend who finally got the help she needed when an emergency room doctor told her "I have stitched you up too many times. This time you bleed until you start making some right choices to live." she was finally able to put the anger on her incestuous father, instead of herself, and she is on the road to hope.
See, it took the courage of one to say, you're going to bleed to death if you go on doing this!
