So it's all over the news. Google launching their new online spreadsheets of ajax, javascript and html magic. But ARE THEY NUTS!!

    googlespread

I've been around the block so many times to be exited by news of new products. I've seen things rise and fall and I've witnessed great things in the making. And I learned not to jump to certain hypes with open arms and ratherthink and ask myself, is this thing the best thing since sliced bread or is it just another flop? That will be over-hyped by many factors and just fizzle out and die with the rest of the could-make-it-but-just-too-stupid-to-work but lets hype about it anyway

The idea of having your sensitive budget information available, online, being handled by some company is a scary one. Very scary if not flat out mad. As a business owner myself. I wouldn't trust my own machines and employees not to leak sensitive information putting them out on the Internet is even way worse

In fact this is so scary that it will be their worst nightmare. I can already see headlinesof laws suits filed for industrial espionage facilitated by lack of security. This is no simple "privacy" inconvenience. This is serious business and a lotmight be at stake

No matter what Google will try, this little applet will never gain popularity. Maybe a few million registrations withfew thousandusers end up using it. But this is no Gmail. This is not Google Search. Or Google earth(now Local). This is potentially something that might contains sensitive information in an inherently insecure environment in insecure conditions being handled by acascade of third parties from your local ISP to their upstream provider all the way to Google headquarter and Storing them on their servers! I would freak out (When there are alternatives like Excel, the free OpenOfficeCalc...etc)

The program's main goal is to make it easier for family, friends or co-workers to gain access to the same spreadsheet from different computers at different times, enabling a group of authorized users to add and edit data without having to e-mail attachments back and forth.

--Jonathan Rochelle, the product manager of the new application

You know? I love to share spreadsheets with my mother when I send her Emails!! Come on, how ridiculous is that!? Spreadsheets are mostly a business tool, sharing it among friends .. Is the silliest thing I've ever heard. It's flat out stupendous!

I think what Google are trying to do is stay in the public eye, with products that might one day be used to something else that would be a killer app. As for this one ... I 'll pass, it's not their next big thing, it's just a little stupid publicity stunt. Most probably to send Microsoft a message that they'll be taking on the challenge head on. I feel sorry for Microsoft at this point, you know why? If they go for the bait and attack head on, they'll get another HUGE anti-trust lawsuit up their asses. And if they don't they've got the new kids on the block challenging everything. So what will you do next Mr Bill Gates? I'd fire a number of vice-presidents who didn't see this coming.

I'm just glad Microsoft is facing competition in all directions. If it doesn't kill them, it'll force them to get off their fat asses and push innovation and the computer industry forward. IE facing off with Firefox, Office with these little offices, Windows with Linux. If there is one thing I learned from Microsoft vs IBM in the 80's and 90's was that, people go for the cheaper alternative. Google is free, Firefox is free, Linux is free (sort of), are we going to see Windows for free?

The problem with Ajax applications and apps that are available online as services are availability. For Ajax to be able to do everything that a full blown C++ Compiled application of multi-megabyte size it will need to be gigantic!! HUGE and worse it needs to be loaded every single time.

Another disadvantage is that there is No guarantee that it would be available. What if the network goes down? What if I'm travelling? What if I'm changing DSL providers (takes 2 weeks to change them where I live), does this mean I will be left out frustrated without service!?

I don' tknow if I can say I trust Google. I don't know if I can say I trust firefox or many others for that matter. The reasons I'm saying that is that if we wake up tomorrow and there is no Google. Nothing will change in my life, my computer experience will be the same I'll just switch to yahoo, or A9, or MSN Search. I'm already using Answers and ASK more than ever. Who knows what will happen in the next few years. It'll be fun

Ajax and online services are great when they work. And fantastic for smaller applications like Maps and mail ...etc, but the larger things get the faster they deteriorate and become unusable. Not to mention the security concerns. The bottom line is that if I can't guarantee that the application is available wherever and whenever I need it then why do I want it?(I'm starting to sound like Shakira)

    Memories....

asalam 3alaykom..i'm not an expert but it does look dumb..
but regarding the competetion with microsoft..i guess that people went for the cheaper deal back in the 80's and 90's because both of them were a new thing at least for the majority of users but now i think that people will go after the trust and the experience..
و على راى المثل اللى نعرفه احسن من اللى ما نعرفوش..
و على راى السيد الوالد..الغالى ثمنه فيه
ايه رايك البت لك الموضوع من هاى تك..الى امثال شعبيه مصريه!
That's so funny "TheCaller", I just updated the article you can reload it and read the updates. I will make one more update in a few minutes and it will be done

Trust, big word... doesn't come easy :)
I don't know if this will be the next big thing, probably not, I mean when it comes to sharing documents with other people, it wasn't really that big of an issue, you could just mail the document to them, however, if by sharing they mean having the ability to work on the spreadsheet by multiple people and altering it in real time, I guess that could come in handy.

but its still in beta and it might not make it like other google products, however it does provide a solution and alternative to micrsofot, and who knows, maybe its just a part of a bigger picture, maybe they're planning on launching their own office suit, who knows!
    asalam 3alaykom..
    you know what i mean..
i meant that people trust that it's a good product..
    come on now..yes it's a big word:)
I can partially agree with you, Farid.  When it comes to free services, people always welcome that.  If you see this free service a "dumb" one and has no immediate use for you ... I'm sure there are others who would find this service very useful.  It would be a very easy way to share a spreadsheet between different people instead of paying a server to host such type of files.

What I will have to agree with you about is the security issues and giving Google more data and information to search within and who knows if the US government will one day have access to it.
Fahad, how often do you send Spreadsheets to your friends? This is one application that I would call "Dead on arrival" since there is absolutely nothing to be gained by having it. With Email servers growing in size and capacity and Google offering me 3 GB while my MSN Account is 2.5GB, yahoo 2 GB, I don't think anyone worries about that 54kB spreadsheet that 1 in million send to family and friends. It's just ridiculous
Spread sheets are a business tool. What business can't afford openOffice? It's FREE!
What justifies downloading the spreadsheet controls every single time you open this thing.

There might be some value in this ting, but I don't see it going anywhere. Just another media hype by good old Google.
Farid ... like I said, I agree with you about the popularity of this free service. It is just another tool you can put in the back of your mind so you can reach for it when you need it if you need it ...

And by the way, Farid ... if you are so worried about sharing private data with Google, then I don't think you will like the idea of Google Browser Sync for FireFox! Now do you think Google have gone too far? Amazing ... isn't it?
Fahad, it's Qwaider قويدر, Apparently Holoscan has an issue with localized strings :)
As for that tool. Fahad, the tool is crippled, it just shows nice tables. and that's about it. No charts none of the function stuff. It's basically a nice looking table. So even when I need it, it will not meet my expectations
As for other Google tools, well lets deal with them one by one shall we :). Some are good, some are OK, and some are not so great. Everyone in the industry is worried about the same thing. WHAT IF, someone was able to get this information from Google. it's that 1 in 10 Billion chance that something like this would happen
