I know many come to these realizations on their own, sometimes after being advised, and sometimes, NEVER. It surprises me how simplistic most people are when it comes to broad statements like that. "Everyone lies". Everyone? Yes every single person that you have met, seen, descended from or heard of. Every single one lies.

    Denial

The first impression people have when they hear that is Denial. "No, I never lie". Oh really? It doesn't matter if it's a big lie, small lie, white lie, black lie or rainbow lie. Every single one lies!

    Shock

So everyone I know lies, does that also include my mother and father!? YES, they are human too, and they lie. Just like everyone else does. They had to resort to lies to help you eat that nasty medicine, or to finish your plate, or to do your chores ...etc ...etc (and lets face it as a little child that can't be reasoned with, the only alternative was to beat you for all of those). Not to mention their social interactions. Which just can not happen with people lying

    Feeling better

So if everyone lies, then I'm shouldn't feel bad about lying myself right? Wrong! As humans we have been molded to search for fact, truth and the full truth. Sure, people can slip in couple of lies here, couple of lies there. But they can never sustain it forever, nor is it appreciated. Especially when people learn of the truth.

    Good for the society

Huh!!? How is lying good for the society. I would go as far as saying that Lying is the very fabric of the society. It's what holds it together. There is hardly a social activity that doesn't have many compliments. Most of these are probably either not deserved or not sincere. But can you imagine a society where people are completely frank!? It just doesn't work.

It's happening all the time, all around us

To prove it, just listen or read a piece of news on two different sites. This is straight-in-your-eyes lying. Everyone is trying to pass their own ideas, while undermining the others. And that including manipulating the stories and ideas to only show their "version" of the truth.

Feel good, Feel bad, look good, look bad

Yes, many people lie to make you feel good. Many more lie to make you feel bad. Or to make you or them look good, while dissing and making the competition or enemies look bad. There are so many reasons why people lie.

    Habit vs necessity

Some people lie occasionally, socially... Other can't pass a minute without lying. Some are even compulsive liars, they would know the truth, and it wouldn't harm them, but they just can't say it. They just have to lie about it.

There are also certain people who just can't be dealt with without lying to them, straight in their face, it's just not possible otherwise.

    So what are lies?

Telling stories, falsifying events, compliments, inaccuracies, missing truth (not telling the full truth is also considered lying), manipulating the events, manipulating the time line, stressing specific points ...etc ... etc ...etc. Lying has so many faces.

    It's OK

Yes, it's OK, people lie, just keep a mental note of it. No need to stress over it. People will continue to do it, just as they have done since man was created. It'll never stop. Just accept ... and move on...

    i couldnt read the whole thing...but even a fake compliment,makes me lose trust in a person,completely.so here's how i see it :

you lie for the following reasons :
    1.shame...
    you're ashamed of what you're doing?...change it.
    you're ashamed of someone else's actions,welll..u shouldnt,its beyond you.
2.fear...its absurd to be afraid of anyone or anything, but God.
and of course,u can always disregard some facts..or choose to keep the whole thing to yourself.

i can proudly say...only 2-3 lies slippd my mouth last year, and i remember them so clearly.i just think its so degrading for humans to lie.
This is an awesome post Q… WOW, I like the way you handled it...
Everyone lies, its totally true, but about the shock part; were you talking to a 6 years old kid or something? Because I can understand the shock when you are a kid, but after a while, there is no need for someone to tell you the fact that everyone lies!!
I really like this post… good job good job (and I’m not lying on this one) ;)

You have missed something so important here...it's when someone's lies become less and less with time. People either start to regret lying, or they just start watching their selves for they start to believe that Allah is watching them:)

It is human nature to lie, the very worst of human nature. Lies break trust, broken trust means no relationships and lonely isolated people who continue in greater denial. Lets try to stop!
dozz and kinzi, what are you saying is true, but is there a day that passed where you didnt tell the slightest lie, like for an example at the supermarket when they ask for a change and you lie and say "no i only have a whole ten", this is what Q is talking about, lies in general not only the kind where you desseive or cause harm to people
in that case that kind of lie is not for dicussion cause i lier will always tell lies
    Everyone lies? Me included? :(

Hek ya Qwiader you insult us all? (kidding)

I had a friend at school, i think that he is a pathological liar, he lies for no apparent reason eventhough we were close friends! I hated that big time, I couldn't bear that kind of friendship altough he is a very nice person, and I know that he used to care a lot for me.

Now I do understand when someone lies for a purpose. If they lied to me, then it depends on the relationship and the amount of lie whether I would forgive it or not.

    الكذب ملح الرجال

can we make all our lies small innocent ones? Yes. no I'm lying.

I didn't like the post! am I lying?
Manal, I am a reformed lie-addict! I am merciless with white lies, and don't ever tell someone I don't have change if I do, that I will call them/visit when I know I won't, exagerations of truth (or telling half/truths)to make me look better, say I will do someone when I have no plans to. Say an outfit looks good on a friend when I don't think so.

ALL lying is deception, little lies lead to big lies. That is why it is one of the Big Ten, "Thou shalt not bear false witness". If one of God's names is Truth, and satan is the "Father of Lies", then chosing a lie is choosing the camp of the greatest deceiver of all. This is one I am black and white on, no gray.
