Another victim of the so called honor crimes is 6 feet under, this time after her father shot at close range in the head. The sad part, he will get 6 months tops in Jail for his murder

I know people have beaten this dead horse for ages now, and it all fell on deaf ears. Is there anything that can really be done? I'm not so optimistic

    +On the Honour of 2007
+The 1st of ‘07! When is this going to stop?

Jordan is governed by a set of laws, civil, religious and tribal. Where the civil and religious fall short, the Tribal laws come in to play

A tribal council has the authority to forgive a murderer, and assailant, as easy as drinking a cup of coffee (that's not a metaphor this is literally the procedure, with a cup of coffee, someone can be released from his crime)

With such ideas in mind affecting more than 90% of the society if I want to be on the conservative side (No, I have no statistics), the tribal councils are actually taking the place of civil courts and resolving issues, easing tensions between families and tribes especially in the cases of manslaughter or minor incidents.

But when it comes to major crimes, this huge influence of these councils is actually very destructive. When a man goes out, to kill his own flesh and blood in the name of "reputation" or "Honor", these tribal councils will deliver him from his crime with a drop of a coffee cup! And the Civil low is crippled by people, not even demanding justice. They completely think, it has been served!

If someone runs a poll on the percentage of people who support slaughtering their sisters/daughters for suspecting or proving an affair or a relationship. You will be overwhelmed by the supporters from both genders. The minority that is demanding or asking for tolerance (including yours truly) just has no chance!

Before we can deal with such a consequence of the backwardness of the society many things need to change. MANY, If the law has to substitute people's free will and choice at times for the benefit of the masses and the future, then SO BE IT! Death can never be justified for any reason, even if these women DID in fact do the unthinkable!

The position of the religion on this is clear. Premarital sex is not punishable by death. And this is Sex (not a relation, not hanging out with a guy, not just talking to someone, not fooling around, not fondling, petting, touching, stroking, patting, rubbing, grinding , courting, hugging, kissing, holding or any thing else other than flat out fully fledged penetration sex)

If the religion decided to be this tolerant with young people who are bound to experiment sometimes, why are some people taking it upon themselves to do god's business for him when he hasn't even asked for it!?

To prove some one's relation the religion's position is 4 witnesses have to be there, and they should pass a string between them and that string shouldn't pass. (This is a metaphor for being ABSOLUTELY positive that what they're doing is really what they're doing, because for all we know they can be in the awkward position, then the 4 witnesses pass the string and if it passes... then that's NOT EVEN PUNISHABLE!

EVEN when someone is caught red handed in the act, by 4 people and the string didn't pass. If it's premarital. It's absolutely not punishable by death! Then what the hell is going on in these people's minds!?

I think the first step is education! Someone need to let everyone know what they are not supposed to do. These crazy people can't just keep going around terrorizing families and generations to come

Second step is a firm law that is not bound by tribal "unmerciful-permission-to-slaughter-forgiveness". A law that will protect the innocent, and deter and prevent the assailant. Is your family honor is worth you life in prison and possible a death sentence?...  That's a good question for these people to ask themselves.

How can a father, look into his daughter's eyes and just pull the trigger!!? How!

    Memories....

    ""slaughtering their sisters/daughters""
""even if these women DID in fact do the unthinkable!""

why when it comes to stuff like this its always a one part fault/crime and by that i mean the girl is always to be blamed and punished...

anyways well said Q this thing must stop, and what do they gain when they kill? really?
بحبش أحكي في الموضوع...من قلة الشرف اللي عند الناس
All people who try to discuss this issue fall in the inevitable mistake!! - When are you people gonna understand that honor crimes have nothing to do with religion?!

I know that you, Qwaider, mentioned religion and denied its role. But sorry thats STUPID. Religion has no place in this discussion AT ALL!!

The problem is with society. Here in Jordan, social net has an inflence that supercedes both religion and the law.

Do you know who started the correlation between "Virginity" and "Honor"?! Its the rich merchants...

In the old days, rich merchants used to marry girls and pay their parents very large amounts of money. With time, rich merchants became demanding and refused to marry non-virgins. They felt that they were paying high prices for a "used" item!! They wanted "brand new" items for the money they pay. For this reason, poor people started demanding that little girls stay virgins so they will not "lose interest". The poor parents needed money, and the rich merchants were willing to pay for a virgin beautiful young girl. That was a good deal for a poor parent.

Once that old mentality was instilled in the minds of people, that a "virgin" is worth more money, the idea mutated and became a "conventional wisdom" as we know today - Maybe honor is really how much money your kids are worth!!
Thanks for the history lesson, I still have no idea what does this have to do with a father savagely butchering his daughter.
As you see "We have a PROBLEM", History aside, we need to deal with this problem!
Parents no longer "pimp" their children. If you read carefully, I see that if someone (like many people out there who blame it on Men, Arab Men, and religion) It's not any of the above. It's the tribal mentality that allows you to get away with things.

Anyway, I don't think we're disagreeing here to begin with!
My point is, we both agree that religion has nothing to do with this, so simple fact of mentioning it makes a subconcious connection between the two in the minds of people.
Even when it's mentioned in the position that it actually MANDATE having a little tolerance and a little understanding towards the innocent? And even when it says that we have to forgive them? And be discrete?
I think in this particular case religions is very much against these acts

But yes, we're in agreement Religion has nothing to do with this, and even discourages them
