This an epic story of another kind of immigrants to the so called "American Dream", where people leave the warmth of their cultures to venture to the cold and lonely existence they get in the Land of dreams and opportunity.

    namesake

Every Immigrant from an eastern culture is likely to experience some if not all of the extremely emotional experiences that this movie depicts faithfully in a social drama that will make  you laugh and cry and hooked up to until the closing seen

9.0/10 on the Qwaider Scale, this is not a Bollywood production
Namesake:a person with the same name as another

The level of intricate details that will capture your eyes and imagination is so immense that many people left the theater stating, oh we miss going back to Calcutta, when they're not ever set foot there, or were even Indians.

The story is about a family that of immigrants from the rich hiritage and deep family ties to the empty, cold, and lonely existence that many new immigrants feel once they set foot in pursue of the American dreams.

    namesake2

The father, a University professor, travels back to India to marry his predestened wife in an arranged traditional marriage. He finds that lady smart, well groomed and all around proper. He also shows deep compassion and extreme understanding to allow her to adjust and feel welcome in her new and not-very-friendly environment

The mother, a talented singer, and a fantastic mother. Shows how deeply connected to the rich traditions that she grew up in while trying to fit in the big new world.

The rebellious son, just like many of the second generation Americans suffering from confusion and deep resentment to his former and new cultures as they collide. Seeking to run away from his hiritage and cast his past aside as he lives with a borrowed American family spending the lot of his time away from the family.

Surprisingly he gets the inspiration to become an architect after the family takes an extended vacation to India where he visits the Taj Mahal ("one of the world wonders", as the mother taught her children. Made me realise how people do view things as wonders regardless of what competition may or may not say. Something that I've been advocating for a while)

A strong jolt of awakening hits the young rebellious son to make him realize how he really missed out on the amazing flavorful culture that he descends from and makes him recover in the Indian view and lapse in the western view.

The movie is extremely filled with so much details that depicts the majority of emotions that can only be left unsaid. The mother and father's extremely decent relation that touching in front of the kids and even words like Love are not uttered. While enjoying a very healthy passionate relation away from the eyes. In the privacy of their bedroom.

    namesake3

So much is told in this amazing story without uttering a single word. How love can propagate through the family emanating from the parent's love without even speaking it. How their love was actually born after they were wed. And how this love lasted through the time and the devilish allure of the new place.

The movie also touches on the meanings of some names and how or what parents were thinking when they gave those names to their children. With such emotional twists that are masterfully choreographed in such a wonderful relaxing manner.

This is one world movie that should be a must see on everyone's list. One of the few that didn't just cause my eyes to glitter with tears, but rather pour out with so much intensity that I've never felt or experienced before. I somehow connected with it, maybe because I'm exactly like this family uprooted from my own cradle and trying to establish new roots on Alien soil.

    Memories....

Sound like a very beautiful movie. The fact that it caused your eyes to glitter with tears makes it a must see movie. I liked the way u described the non-spoken love between the 2 of them, both of them feel the love from the other but they don’t have to talk about it... That’s just nice
I’m looking forward to see it, thanks Q
