Everyone is just ecstatic, raving and marvelling over Steve Jobs's latest monstrosity, the iPhone. People are ecstatic that finally the iPhone has arrived, it's the era of the iPhone, it's the gadget that makes any adult scream "I want it mummy". Hailing perfection and enjoying the long awaited amazing reality.

What people fail to realize is that this is just like any other gadget! It has pros, cons, side effects and issues, and in this case MAJOR issues.

Take for example that nice, 3.5" LCD screen. True it's something, it's gorgeous. If it was on an IPod or a Sony PSP. But smacked next to your lovely face? Ladies, do I hear anyone say, Doh, Foundation! These things came with trial and error to major manufacturers like Nokia, SonyEricsson, Motorola and Samsung. It took them years and plenty of failures to realise that a glass sheet stuck next to your oily, sweaty, chemical laden face is NOT a pleasant thing.

But that's only the beginning. Also, many years ago people have discovered (through accessibility research which Jobs apparently doesn't give a damn about), well they discovered that 90% of people actually don't look at the keypad. That's right. People just slide their fingers until they find that little protrusion marking the number "5" (also search for that on your num-keypad on your keyboard). It makes life much easier. Especially in dark situations, of for the SMS worrior, or the old aunti who misplaced her glasses.

The next thing is the dimensions. It's 135grams 115x61x11.6 now quite frankly, that's large, heavy and unusual. It frankly looks like a Sony PSP without the keys.

Now to the seriously nasty stuff. It's Cingular ONLY for 2 YEARS and you have to sign up a 2 year contract to get the advertised price of $499. Highly discounted of course and heavily LOCKED and Cingular customised.

No Push Mail. Come on if you're getting an awesome phone, wouldn't you want to do some "work" on it?

There's also no word on A2DP stereo bluetooth (play tunes on your gadget while you're wireless headphones are picking them up over bluetooth, pretty nifty, first to the market Nokia)

I project the price of the unlocked version of the phone will be in the neighborhood of $900 for the 4GB version. That's the price of a pretty decent laptop + a moto-razr and some change in your pocket.

But I have to admit, the cool factor is there.

Advocates say, well Apple users don't usually worry about technical details. Well, *NEWSFLASH*, this phone is not directed to apple fans, but rather to the masses. Someone paying $900 for a phone sure knows (or should know) what he's getting. And lets be real only a tiny section of the geeky crowd is NOT interested in specs. Does this phone looks like my mamma's next phone? No way in hell. Does it look like a geek's phone? Well, after considering all the opportunities out there.... I'd go for a nice Samsung SGH-i310 (which have been out for a year now) but can you look at these specs and cry!!? it even has TV out for god's sake! Voice recognition ... etc ...etc ...etc

Don't go for the Samsung, - check out O2's products, or i-Mate, or HTC, - as Samsung's battery life is absolutely crap. I'm using a D900, with a product sheet battery life of 6hrs30mins, actual battery life is barely 3hours on the phone. And, standby is 3 days without a single call or sms!

Though, for your information, a friend with an O2 xda exec restarts his phone at least once a day, and similarly another friend with an iMate JasJar as it does hang, though perhaps they might be misusing their phone. Please post thoughts of the phone you pick up. Would be great feedback :)
I have an Imate SP5, I haven't restarted it since I turned it on at the airport when I landed here, and I'm doing Eamil, SMS, Streaming audio, Web browsing, calls, bluetooth, wifi, USB, USB-modem ... and all is working just fine with Windows Mobile 5! So I'm not sure why your friend is having issues.

7abibi, you're a mac hater.. die with your stupid windows :) the most stupid thing ever!
Me, Mac hater? :D In case you didn't notice, I didn't even mention Mac, this is Apple iPhone dude!
I love Mac, it's a pretty toy that I can keep around when maybe I'm not working or something.
the best thing that came out of Apple is under the threat of going back. it is still not approved by the FCC and Cisco filed a law suit just today. I really hope for Apple to succeed in bringing the iPhone to life. Ever since I did that strategic management project regarding Apple Inc., and I am in love with their products.
Qwaider, thanks for your comment on my blog on the subject.

I must say I agree with you, but should let you know it supports IMAP and Yahoo push, which is going to be free for iPhone users.

This phone is inferior to last years offerings from HTC based devices. Only a totally misinformed n00b would believe all the noises Jobs was making.

I will probably make a similar presentation like his on my broken down (literally) 3 yearold iMate PE and post it on YouTube and my blog.
Thanks Sari, much appreciated, and thank you for the addition. But I already knew that.
iPhone does indeed support IMAP, POP and Yahoo push, what ever that is going to materialize into. But unfortunately that's NOT corporate email like in the Rem Blackberry devices or Windows Mobile 5. That's extremely unprofessional.
Add to that no over-the-air syncing to your corporate address book (over GPRS/EDGE). (WM phones can sync over: USB, IrDa, Bluetooth, WiFi, and the GSM network) It's just fantastic to have all your addresses with you where ever you go, and the minute you add a new contact, it would be added to your Outlook contacts without even going to the office, or having a single outlook client running. That's just scratching the surface of WM phones. Not to mention they're already being used as jukeboxes playing MP3's, Videos and some with TV out. The Samsung I mentioned above even have USB Host (or in other words, someone can plug their digital camera and download images from it to the phone)

If I'm going to start on the list of advantages of WM5, it'll take me a month. So I'll just stop there

Thanks again Sary, and absolutely agree, only n00b's are hailing this.
