A well known concept in the west is "Privacy bubble" which is basically a virtual bubble surrounding a person when dealing with people. Some researchers put the number at around 3 feet around a person. Others say 6 but everyone understands the need for "distance" between a person and people he or she don't know

Below 3 feet you're dangerously close to someone. So close that you can almost smell their aftershave, or their breath. If the distance falls below 1 feet, this is called intimate bubble, where only very close people are allowed.

Apparently, in Jordan, people have no consideration to these virtual privacy borders. And often times you'll find people touching you, or hanging dangerously close to you to the point of discomfort.

I had a brush with this realisation today when I was at a bakery waiting for some yummy pastries, where people were seriously in violation of my bubble borders. To the point that would make anyone feel discomfort, I think I might have been the only one annoyed by this.

I'm far from homophobic, but people touching me, or residing very close to me feel stressful, since they activate my extra radars and cause me to be weary of their intentions.

Are they trying to pick my pockets? Are they trying to indecently touch me! And what the hell is that thing stuck too damn close to my back!?

I do realise that people act differently in crowded spaces, and it takes a while to get used to that but nevertheless, I guard my privacy religiously and could just not feel comfortable with anyone breathing -literally- down my neck.

Who knows .... maybe I'll get used to this some day ... but for now ... my Radar is going haywire!

    Memories....

    LOL
i know what you mean!! but in a bakery store that is small, and people are waiting for the yummy goods, i guess there is no space to spread out and get 3 feet of space for each one standing in line..NOW, imagine you were a woman and the same thing happening to you..i am sure you would have caused a scene!
well i bet u will hear summer that the women are the ones who are sticking up close, but its true men are more carefull when it comes to these matters, but women they push, stand close and sqeeze them selves and it's alright as long as a man dont do it to her or he is in deep shit, and that why men are more carefull.

I guess privecy is something we cherich back here in the West as much as it should be cheriched in a Muslim society which unfortunately non of the Arabic countries qualified for. Personally I never tolerated any one whether man or woman invading my "Privacy bubble" as i would burst his or her buble with no regret! I still say Qwaider you asked for it you and your friend "Maraqa" ;)
HAHAHA ... this post made me laugh because it reminds me of my father. He was the first one to explain to me this concept. He told me a privacy bubble story everytime i cracked my knuckles on his shoulders. ... LOL ..
