I'm so surprised with the amount of people who just rally behind some ideas ... even when it's really ...well not all that great!

I'm going to say 3 things, Linux, Firefox, Open Source.

Now, these are NOT the bad idea. What's really bad is people going after these here as if they are the best thing in the universe. ESPECIALLY when they have absolutely no clue what it means!

Yes, Linux is Free (look up, Total cost of ownership, learning curve, minimal hardware support, nightmare to keep up and running, horrible user experience, competing non-standards) and you will know why! Even Oracle got so frustrated with Redhat that they decided to go out and do their own support which cost Less than half of what Redhat charges... Huh? Half? What happened to "free"? And Naturally redhat lashed back with "Unfakeable Linux". Cool! While windows continued to gain ground by making London Stock Exchange! the fastest in the world

Yet, you find people defending and going absolutely NUTS in a frantic way for the slightest hint that,  well .. it's nice but it needs improvement!

Next, the infamous Firefox. The little (not little anymore) browser that made Microsoft get off their lazy asses and make IE7, late, and mediocre at best, but better than IE5 and IE6. Yet, one shouldn't confuse one thing for another. IE7 has some real heavy weight security features and packs a good punch when it comes to performance (with FF following), but this is not the point. If you like Firefox GREAT, if you like IE, also great. Just don't be a fanboy! Be skeptical and know what you're "NOT" getting.

I doubt that there has been a single phenomena with more fan boys. I'm not talking about people who use it and love it or hate it. I'm talking about people who continuously argue day and night about how amazing it is when for all goodness IT IS ANYTHING but great!! Most lack the basic knowledge in CS technology and yet they continue to argue with people who actually went to Software engineering school. (No I don't mean you Ghaith, you're actually one of the few who do make sound points)

And Finally Open-Source! However noble the idea may seem, working for free is NOT cool! That's one problem, the second is the questionable quality if things. Yes someone might want to do a good job, but why? or Why not? they may feel sleepy that night and really not do a good job

There is also the issue of authority. So if something goes wrong... Who should I direct my steam against?! And finally, what would stop someone from injecting some malicious code in there?! And since the code is readily available, white box hacking is a breeze, check what a colleague of mine says On ZdNet here, Things to ponder upon I'm sure!

My advice to everyone, just don't be a parrot ... love something because it's actually doing something for you. NOT because people tell you it's great!
