People everywhere are switching to Organic food. The promise of healthier, Safer or the silver bullet that will save your life ... or are they?

Many people nowadays are switch and in increasing numbers to all-organic on the promises that it prolongs life .. It improves the quality of life.

    The facts are:

    • Organic food isnot pesticide free
    • Organic food is not healthier or safer
    • Organic food does not have better nutrients or better quality of them
    • Green manure used to fertilize organic food is actually a different crop that is cultivated to fertilize the main crop, may or may not contain chemicals but the fact is it requires double the amount of land, water etc ... in fact processing it on it's own requires machines, chemicals and waste that harms nature
    • Organic food does not taste better
    • Organic doesn't include less fat, carbs or anything you're trying to avoid

The big corporates try to make you think you're eating organic when in fact you're eating the same old crap.. And guess what, you're paying more for it. So what can you do about it?

The only real organic food is actually the stuff that you grow at home. That's the stuff that you know exactly what they contain.

I think people should stop fooling themselves and get the facts before making a leap of faith

    Hello,
I don't know about the US, but countries usually issue laws so that products cannot be sold in markets as organically-grown when they're really not, there are tests and checks before they are allowed on the shelves.

As for organic products being "healthier", you're right, that has not been proven for sure. However, the idea of organic products goes beyond that; organic products do not burden the environment (where chemicals usually pollute groundwater and are toxic to soil and animals). Organic products absolutely do not contain chemical residue since there is no chemical input, as ordinary commodities may.

From what I learned about green manure, it does not require double the water or land. In fact you can grow it between the rows of the original crop (aka intercropping). This practically requires no additional land at all, as for water I would say it improves the over all water use from a field perspective.

In terms of sustainability, going organic does the trick in my opinion.

While I don't think we need to purchase organic everything, there are some foods that are probably safer if purchased organic. I buy organic milk because cows now are given large injections of hormones so that they produce more milk. Let's face it, women don't need any extra hormones:). There are some preliminary studies to suggest the hormones could be contributing to the fact that children now are going through puberty at a much younger age than even 15 years ago. Don't take my word for it- look at your average fifth grade class. I am actually one of the smallest people in the class of 6th graders I teach! Hormones are not the only cause of this, but they definately could be contributing.
