In a historic interview including Stephan Hawking, Carl Sagan and Arthur C. Clark. Three people that I hold greatest level of respect in all of human history, they were talking, contemplating the universe and many other things until Stephan Hawking said:
"I use god in the same sense as Einstein did; it is really the reason why the universe is, as it is, and why the universe exists at all".
This is a huge statement from someone like Hawking, one that can be interpreted in many ways. But I believe in the scientific sense it means: "We don't know". This is a sort of argument to end all arguments about the matters of existence and God.
Is this Atheistic? Or religious?
It is actually both! It should satisfy both and it should lay to rest who is right. Both are right, and both are wrong at the same time.
So what do we learn from this?
Well, for starters, we know that at the highest level of intelligence on this planet. Those issues are not completely and utterly resolved yet. Many people are quick to jump to the conclusion that the universe can be explained with Science and math therefore there is no need for a god. Although, this might be true for explaining the universe as in Laplace's famous reply to Napoleon: "Sir, I have no need of that hypothesis", which literally means, I have no unknowns in my equations to attribute to the divine.
Many things in this world we understand like that, for example, if you add 2+2 you always know the answer. You don't need any Holy book or a divine revelation to explain it to you. Take that thought, expand it to include the universe. As we get closer and closer to unlocking some of the fundamental laws of energy, matter, forces and how they interact, we can get to the point that we KNOW the universe without the need or use of any divine revelations.
There will always be things that we will never know. Therefore there is always a place for God. At least in the logical sense of the matter. A place that no matter how much we develop our understanding or improve our knowledge and methods. A place that can never be displaced.
If that doesn't help shine a light on the path to god, I don't know what could.
Now you can enjoy this interview. It's worth every second of your time, and all the attention that you can provide
