Everyday I’m starting to believe more and more that depression is a contagious disease. Just being in the vicinity of some chronically depressed people is enough to get you feeling down as well and forces you to start wallowing about your own life. I guess I can’t generalize, but many people are susceptible to this form of telepathic pathogen.

Here’s what you should do to maintain your mental health and protect yourself from depression!

    1. Stay away from depressing people!
    2. Realizing that 1 is not possible, at least realize that these people are depressing and could infect you
    3. It’s only human to feel sad and sympathize with others, but just because they have bad things going on in their life, don’t feel obligated to share your own sadness!
    4. Some people are wired in a depressing way. They can have the best things in life, and really don’t appreciate any of it!
    5. Some people are depressing liars! They enjoy making people get depressed! Or feel that they must give you all the negatives in their life just so you won’t “envy” them! These are the worst type of people and you should follow advise #1 regarding them!
    6. There are those who specialize in pointing out the negatives in your own life! Now sure, most parents do this to help bring out the best in you. But there are those who enjoy doing that to get you depressed! Follow advice #1 with these also.

Few people have the mental maturity to survive the friends’ depression attack. Realize this and understand that you’re life is a lot better than you think, or more importantly what other people want you to think

    Enjoy!

I know ... friends also fall in that category and they can really ruin your life with their negativity!

As long as we're aware of that we should be fine
I see many but I don't "really" know why they don't affect me? stone cold heart? I don't know. However, I think in that case you can only cheer them up and tell yourself that I must not get involved in their stories.

Mohammad, it's normally a sign of great emotional maturity. Not many people can claim that. Or it's the fact that these people might not mean much to you.

Eitherway. Emotional maturity is something we should all try to get.
People get depressed every now and then.. it happens. To classify them like they're infectious parasites is a bit uncalled for.. Though I know where you're coming from. My friend broke up his engagement and I had to listen to him complain nine hours straight on the first day, and I had to sleep over and hear all about it all day next day and the third day. It is mentally exhausting.. but since I know it is not *my personal* problem, I was fine.

    Hi KJ
If you notice I said "Depressing" people, not "Depressed". I know the difference and I use it for a specific reason. Many depressing people aren't even depressed to begin with.

Anyway, good for you... you were able to isloate yourself from what was happening. Not many peopla re as lucky.

What I do say, depression is worth of sympathy. But not of guilt, since there is nothing that you did, or can do to make the depression [of others] go away

It's funny you mentioned this. In the past, I used to think that depression is something I would never experience. Now it seems like every now and then I'm in a depressed state.
    Allah ye3eena, it's not a pretty picture.

Sometimes we need to be depressed for a while you need to be away from everyone and just grief for something; but people just get confused a lot between a period in ur life and if its really my life...
