And #Osama bin Laden is dead
It's been almost ten years since the infamous terrorist attacks against the World Trade center twin towers in which Osama bin Laden has been prime suspect and alleged mastermind. Frankly, I didn't believe he had the means or the know-how to do it then. I still don't think he did it today.
But today it's not about what I think happened, or who to blame. Today it's announced by President Obama that Osama bin Laden, the number one person on the American most wanted list is dead.
I guess Americans can finally sleep better at night, could they?
To be completely honest, I see this as just more reason to be alarmed than ever. This is the time where other less known but equally fanatic leaders would present themselves as the successors to Bin Ladden's legacy. If you know anything about the Islamic history it's the successors that make all the difference. In Arabic, the successor is called "Khalifa" or Caliph and on many cases the successors have worked very hard to trump the achievements of their predecessors.
These news are probably another jolt of lightning to wake us all up. We're in the 21st century and the first decade is already over. Times have changed and the world is most certainly changing. But it has been changing ever since it existed. I know. But for some reason, we were still stuck in the 1990's for a long period of time.
I'm hopeful that with today's announcement, the American people will put a face on the terror and personalize it, not personify it. It's a person who bestowed this horrible act, and it's that person who takes the burden of it to his or her grave. Not the people, and certainly not the religion.
If you have reasons to rejoice today, good for you. If you have reasons to mourn today, I have sympathy for you. I hope the world can learn from these dark chapters a way to live in coexistence and tolerance as we march forward towards our mutual and challenging future.
