Through the course of my job, I get these opportunities to really make a difference, or "Shine"!
Here's the situation, I have this pretty complicated daily task. I have to do it, every single morning, like clockwork!
Knowing that everything that takes too much of my time better be really valuable. So I thought, here's my chance to make a difference and "Shine"
So, I automated the process, it takes me less than 5 minutes to finish it now (By the way, LinQ is one heck of an amazing tool) but this post is really not about programming, so don't worry.
Anyway, now that I'm done with my amazing application, which impressed even me. Like, I didn't expect it to be this amazing, and it surpassed all my expectations, now that it's done... I'm faced with a huge dilemma!
Do I tell my manager about it (And look really awesome and cool)? Or do I enjoy my extra time and use it for something else (while still appearing to be really hardworking since I'm achieving the results)?
Do you see why I'm not sure what to do? The minute I declare it has been automated and my time is free again, someone will find a way to fill up my time with more work. Which I really don't mind, I love my job so much. But a little free time, goes a long way.
But I really want to share my breakthrough. I mean, I worked hard at it, it will save me at least 25% of my time and therefore can be more productive (and look awesome) at least in the eye of my management.
Tough choice!
But to be completely honest, I feel that I am ethically obligated to share this with my management.
I think I might be able to reassign this task to someone else, and free up my time altogether to do more creative work... After all, now anyone can do the job. It's been simplified and streamlined. I guess, I will go with this choice then.
Just a note, if your job is too hard, mechanical, routine and takes too much time. You better make yourself obsolete, before someone else does. You can mark my words, in the next 10 years, there will be none of these jobs left. So be creative :)
Memories....
