Jordanian domain registry - You gotta be kidding me!

Just out of curiosity, and after the astonishing success that the .ly ccTLD (country code Top level domain) with great products like ow.ly and bit.ly using it (If you don't know or have not heard about this .ly is the ccTLD for Libya). I thought, so what are folks in Jordan doing with the awesome .JO ccTLD. It could be hip! Someone might want to Register Ban.JO or Fro.JO or MO.JO or any other catchy little domain.

so I went to the Jordanian registry and found ... one of the best Jordanian products in the flesh ... Bureaucracy!

Look, I'm an expert when it comes to these things and I can tell you with great authority, that 90% of all this stuff required above, are not even remotely necessary.

Look, we need to be providing a service. Someone is actually coming to you. In other words, you have the company/individual/institution what have you by the (excuse my French) balls! They CAN NOT do anything and have to ANSWER for everything, IF they want to remain in good standing with your service.

Why would you need "Documents" to register a domain? This reeks of 1994! Not 2010, don't you agree?

The Jordanian domain is never going to be more targeted or alluring than .com or .net, If it is going to compete with people already providing these domains (take your pick of the countries of the world, they sell domains for a good chunk of cash).

Here are a few things that can make this embarrassing site, and approach to business a little bit better...

This domain needs to be revamped with a 2010 design and services. It's not enough for it to be pretty, it needs to be functional too
The method of payment, is the leash that you will use to associate identity of the owner (in addition to Administrative, Billing and technical Contacts) to the site. If you need to go after someone, The bank has ALREADY taken care of that for you.
You don't need any documents to register a domain, just contact information and payment.
These services can be outsourced to registrar(s) that will be reselling it to their customers. Registrars should compete to pay Jordan the highest possible price or provide value associated with the registration
The onus is on the Registrars to collect and maintain details necessary, they need to be available whenever a subpoena is presented to them.
Should conflicts arise, it will be the job of the Jordanian courts to settle the conflict, the NIC should not take part.
If a person, organization or entity violate the rules simple, shut them down!

I think in this day and age, to deal with people with the mentality of the 1960s is no longer acceptable. In a country like Jordan that is looking forward to being the Middle Eastern Silicon Valley, that mentality is the first thing that needs to make way for progress.
