Last night during the super bowl (if you're not versed in American pop-culture, the Super bowl is like World cup for American Football). It's also the time were some of the year's best and most expensive commercials are aired.

In an interesting twist, Google, the dominant search giant, whose name became synonymous with searching the Internet, aired an interesting commercial, for what I believe is the first time EVER! (I don't recall seeing any commercials for Google search on TV, there were a few for Android, and even Chrome, but not Search).

However, I have seen interesting (and controversial) commercials for Bing, Ask, Yahoo and a bunch of the now completely forgotten bunch. But never for Google Search, since it's usually the "losers" who try to get some time in front of the consumer eyes.

I might be reading too much into this but the way I see it, Google appears to be hurting, at it's top game... or is it?

In the search engine world. Things appear to have stagnated for Google, being stuck at 85% globally and unable to advance or crush the remaining 15% where others continue to "inch" their way into the Google dominated turf. Yahoo, Bing and Baidu are all up.

On the cell phone front, Googgle's Android is still struggling after it nestled it self in a niche market for geeks where Microsoft Mobile exists (not iPhone or Black berry which continue to dominate), and also no where near Nokia!

On the OS front, Google's OS is suffering from what all Linux based desktops are suffering, lack of interest by the general public.

And finally on the browser front, Chrome is barely touching Safari's percentage. No where near Firefox, and way back in the dust for IE.

On new technology front, Google Wave made a lot of ripples but no splash! Even among the geek folk. The awesome Google Voice (which I love and adore) isn't growing well and I've heard nothing new coming from Google in a long time, even the brain farts stopped!

Are these all signs that Google is in trouble? Or heading to trouble?

Time will tell how things unfold, but from the looks of it, it seems that things aren't going that well for the big G! Once thing is certain, Big G has the cash to afford such a spot on TV with a simple demo of what any modern search engine can do these days. Selling you on the nostalgia of the act instead of the actual features [Similar to what most credit card commercials target].

What I don't understand is "why?". Why would the dominant search engine of the world have to advertise for everyone who is already using it that it is there!?

I bet there's a lot to come soon regarding this "why"

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing when I watched the commercial: why?  I loved the idea and I think it was brilliantly and simplistically implemented.  I just couldn't figure out how Google expected such a commercial to drum up more business when they are #1 in the game.
might be the start of a long re-branding campaign

Maybe it is because they don't want OTHER people to advertise, so they just steal the spot. It isn't about "hey, we are here" it is about "hey, it's only US here"
KJ you're forgetting the "ooohhh look how pretty and good we are"
