The days of portable music devices are numbered. But they're not the only gadgets that are marching steadily but surely to the shredder.

These devices came at a time of great technological convergence. They narrowed a gap between the old and the new. The old being analog music devices and the new being the ultra new portable wearable computers. For that, many generations had to be developed and many had to go, bye-bye.

Don't get me wrong, the iPods are not completely going to disappear. But this whole market is going to shift and evolve as technology gets cheaper, smaller and better. They will be eventually as small as a MicroSD card. With everything on a single little chip that can be hooked up to anything.

But what is this "anything" that is in such a position to take on the world?

Microsoft, ehm, Zune, pay attention please since this concerns you!

So why am I being the apocalyptic prophet of the portable-music devices doom? Simply, because I saw the future and iPods were not there! For the uptight readers, I'm just kidding. I didn't see the future, I'm just predicting based on the direction technology is going AND social trends.

Truth is, phones are poised to inherit the world. Everything than can be done on an iPod can be done on a phone, and then some.

This is why I personally think that companies investing in "beating" Apple in this market are wasting their time, resources and money. Instead, they should focus on the next big thing. The establishment of mobile phone as the corner stone for everything that has to do with digital and communications. From music, to networking, to sharing, to gaming and even life saving. The phone is going to be there.

Frankly, if it was up to me, and I had the ears of one of the executives at Microsoft I would really urge them to focus on the future, and dump all these side attractions in Zune and the rest of useless project that have no future, and have only been created to compete with an overly saturated market

The way I see it, the poor sales of portable music devices isn't due to anything other than the fact that anyone who wants one has already got one. It's not about the features anymore. A first generation iPod does just about everything you need. So why upgrade if everything works? That's why the new iPods are not going to succeed. Mainly due to the competition of their older, widespread, and very successful ancestors.

Now focusing back on the future, I would say, focus on the phones. Make sure they are everything people need. Phones should replace every device you have from PDA (already dead), to personal-music devices, to "viewers" including, future tablets, current book readers and other less successful video devices. Add to this list, a replacement for all portable gaming devices, a replacement for GPS devices and a replacement for satellite radio like XM. (Some will say digital cameras, but I kinda believe that this one is going to hold its own due to the superiority of the camera's optics)

The future of the phone is extremely promising. With it replacing even car GPS. Just imagine, wouldn't you prefer to use a car that has a built in navigation screen that is based on a Phone or one that knows nothing about communications? Just imagine the one based on a phone updating its software, upgrading its OS, getting you live data and even making phone calls for you.

But before all of this can come true, people who have the potential to do it, namely: Google, Microsoft, Nokia and Apple need to sober a bit up. Shift their gears and vision. And go do it.

The future of the handheld is going to be the descendent of the modern day smart phone. There's no doubt in my mind about this. The first to realize this challenge is going to be the pioneer of this market. With the companies mentioned above having enough experience and enough financial might to really go after this.

Services will also follow. Designed and targeting the new phone based smart appliances. From refrigerators to cars. They'll all be connected, and so far, the only viable proven alternative has been the phone.

Soon, these will be smarter and more reliable. They will replace everything.
It's not a secret that Garmain one of the leading GPS makers have created their own phone as well. I think they're up to something.
As these technologies converge, we will see more and better devices.

The funny thing about phones is, whatever they touch. Becomes a phone! For example, an IPhone does a lot more than phone, it's a PDA and some phones even have radios on them. Still they're called Phones!

I wonder in a situation of Car vs Phone who would win :)

You're not a post apocalyptic prophet of portable music devices, you're just a post apocalyptic prophet!

Why do people buy new iPods? Because not everyone is as sane as you are, and loads of people must have the absolute newest. I have the second gen iPhod, a humble 2GB that does the job, and when my younger cousin saw it (she's around 9) she was absolutely APPALLED! Her older sister, 16, was just as appalled but was more modest about expressing it LOL!

Ah, the Walkman was the best!

Unless companies perfect the playback functions in phones, people will still carry around their horrible Zunes and sexy iPods. What baffles me is a guy who has an iPhone and an iPod (where the pod was bough AFTER the phone).

I totally agree with your amazement. Why would anyone buy iPod after they got an iPhone/Smartphone!?
The thing is any modern day phone is pretty capable and reliable portable music device. However, many idiotic manufacturers insist on having whacky headphone connections (how stupid is that?) so that users would buy only their price-jacked-up-but-mediocre-headphones.

Eventfully, they will come around and understand that they MUST support the standard, or lose to other manufacturers who do.

But if you notice iPod sales are down. Zune are almost non-existent, not because the new versions have anything wrong with them. But because this market is just oversaturated with amazingly sexy alternatives like the iPhone readily available and for just about the same price.

Apple have a bit of a good thing going with the iPod Touch, though.  It retains most of the functionality of the iPhone without the phone, of course.  That's great for a) people that already have a phone and aren't ready to ditch it for a smart phone yet, b) people that don't want to be locked into a specific carrier just to have a specific type of phone (which is about to end soon anyway), or c) school-age kids and teenagers that want something that is ultra-functional but can't be trusted with an expensive iPhone yet.

My 13-year-old daughter falls into the 3rd category.  She has an iPod Touch, but just think about the future.  When it comes time to ditch her cheepie Nokia phone for something else, where do you think she's going to look?  She already is familiar with the interface so there's no learning curve to upgrading to an iPhone.  She already has all of her contacts, calendar items, pictures, and more synced to her Touch.  And she has a buttload of apps already purchased that can be ported over with no hassle or frustration ever.  So naturally she is more inclined to stay in Apple's camp than to defect to another manufacturer.

    Absolutely true Dave,
And hence, the portable media devices will lose yet another user for the all-powerful phone.
