Do you think thoughts of smoking will go away?
The short answer is no!
How long does it take for a person who quit smoking to stop thinking about it?
Another short answer, NEVER!
Smoking is one of those habits that, once you develop, you will never be able to totally escape! The thoughts keep coming back to you. They keep wanting you to take one last puff!
I'm marching towards my 3rd year smoke-free. However, let me tell you something, IT IS NOT EASY! The thoughts don't just evaporate, they keep coming back.
I have to admit that after the second year, I started to think less of smoking, way less, but I still think about it from time to time.
People smoke not only because it's their addiction, but also because they love it. They enjoy the social part of it, the relaxing effect. I know, it's weird, but that stuff keeps popping up in your mind.
So here are a few tips for ex-smokers. Pass them on to someone you know who quit. He will thank you for it.
- Avoid all the social gatherings that contain smoking
Come on, if you've quit, hanging around the dumpster with your old-still-smoking-buddies isn't going to do you any good.
- Avoid drinking.
If you drink, and every time you do so end up smoking. Then avoid drinking. Especially when there are smokers. Drinking impairs your judgment and will make you easier to do things you wouldn't normally do.
Worse, drinking might internally signal your cravings for smoking.
Additionally, some people like the "justification" that drinking gives. Just avoid it all together
- Don't hang around smokers.
Yes, the cool set of bad boys that smoke, will reek of the smell that you love. Stay away from them. ESPECIALLY when they've just returned from their 3PM fix!
- If you have a craving. Call a trusted friend, wife, girlfriend or even your mother. Anyone who would tell you to NOT SMOKE. Don't just keep it to yourself.
Also, if you have a blog, blog about it! It helps, trust me, it does.
- Get busy!
Seriously, if you're busy and consumed by what you're doing. It's hard for you to remember your old craving. Make sure you get busy doing something you like. Or a chore you've been putting off for a while. It will help get your mind off
Quitting has been the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life. Just to put things in perspective. It's really hard to quit, especially when you love something. So if you know someone who has quit smoking. Give them a call, and show your appreciation and support.
Memories....
And the tips are great and helpful,, Thank you for sharing is with us :)
I found that getting consumed in a sport ( martial arts for me ) and having my butt kicked by people who don't smoke was one of the biggest incentives to quit smoking. Two years and counting :)
