H1N1 (Swine flu) and my conspiracy theory friends

A friend of mine, is one of those believing in every possible conspiracy that involves pharmaceutical companies. She would argue for hours on how vaccines are bad, and how the companies are deliberately taking actions to "reduce the human population" starting with the young, the weak and the ill.

I know it sounds too Nietzsche, a conspiracy theorist dream come true. But, many people are starting to fall victim to these poorly communicated, and mostly inaccurate, unproven and bogus claims (and accusations)

What makes people so hostile to modern technology, and the amazing advances in healthcare?

first of all, granted, not every medicine is actually good for you. But it was the sincere effort of the people who invented these medications to save people's lives. Things go wrong, side effects can go on for years, even decades without being properly diagnosed or identified.

If the doctors knew they were harmful, they wouldn't have experimented with them in the first place.

Also know this, every medicine you take, is likely to be a form of a poison if taken incorrectly with no proper dosages. Now, I'm not a doctor, but seriously, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that drug abuse of any kind is deadly.

I think people are scared, and when people get scared they create demons, and feel afraid and threatened by them. When people are afraid many stick to the norms that they are comfortable with.

But diseases might require a person to go out of their regular routine to get better...

I'm not sure, but I believe in science... I really do, and I would take the words of doctors and pharmacist over the words of any conspiracy theorists no matter how hard they tried to convince me.
