It sucks when your whole existence is reduced to being a single digit in a government statistic! On the desk of some official or in a journal online.

Seriously though, it would have taken an act of God for me to leave my job. But in all frankness, it wasn't doing me any good; too much stress, too little appreciation. Even worse, I think I was getting depressed not seeing an end to the very frustrating situation.

Then, I was told that I'm being laid off, just like millions who lost their jobs everywhere...

I left my building where I've spent the last 10 years of my life, with a box of worthless memorabilia of how great I helped make that company...

I reached my car, drowning in thoughts. How am I going to make ends meet? How am I going to prepare for my new child? How am I going to keep paying the mortgage? Especially when the economic recession doesn't appear to be ending any time soon!

Was it time to cut my losses and go home? Was it time to cash out all my savings just to pay the bills? Is it time to sell everything close shop and just go back to my room in my folks house?

Then, my mind kicked in... what is done is done, and I'm now in Damage control mode. What I need to do, what I need to prepare, things I need to ensure to sustain this family.

First order of business, make sure medical insurance will be there for the family. With a pregnant wife, this is essential.

Second, cut/shutdown any unnecessary bills. From extra minutes on the cell phone to complete lines that are not used.

Third, ensure the life line still flows, apply for unemployment benefits. After supporting the system for 10 years. It was about time I get some back, no?

Fourth, Send resume to recruiters, hit job sites, and make sure resume is up to date, polished, and highlights the right set of skills being looked for.

Next call in some favors from friends, colleagues, and old business associates.

Before Maioush made it home from work, I had everything under control. It's tough to share the bad news. But inevitable. These events affect the whole family... But the timing could have been a bit better than the eve of Eid...

After all of that, I, for the first time in years, felt relieved. I swear to god. I have never felt this relieved in years....

But how is all of this caused by god? ... I'll let you know soon...

Wow! tough break dude. I am honestly in shock! You are the last person I had imagined to be laid off. But I am surprised because you seem calm in this blog post; no panic, no depression, nothing! Good for you Qwaider. You are a very talented man and I bet you won't have any trouble to get any job you want.

    My best wishes.

no worries man.. you work in IT field.. no recession for this! things will work out soon.

good luck for you in your career.
maybe it is time you think of your own business? because it has been around that need is the mother of invention :) they say when there's will there's way, i say eshtadee azma tanfariji, so 3asa an takrahu shay2an wayaj3alu allahu feehi khayran katheeran

but this really just proves what i always nagged about, those who keep urging me to build "loyatly" towards the company i work for, u know with all my 9 years of experience, i had no loyatly but to my pocket :) sort of speak, i go to work and im 100% dedicated and honest, but thats more than they can ever dream of having, loyalty is la alla w bass, w zai ma begoolu, el rejl eddeb, ma6ra7 mat7eb ;) lesson learned, if ur stuck in the same place for two years, start packing before u get used to it, moving is the best safe experience anyone can put himself into, i tried it many times and it is rejuvenating to know u're in control

    Salam bro,

I have been in your shoes before, it is all in the books, I promise you in 3 months you will be greatful you are out of there.

May I also suggest talking to Arabs in your town, JV or some sort of partnership. Most of American Arabs business owners are looking for guys in your caliber to either help them grow their business or partner with them in a new venture. They got the cash and they are looking for the brains.

Best of luck, I'm not worried about you bro, I know you will find a better opportunity pretty soon and remember with a new baby God brings out a huge barakeh for you.

    Salam,

    Khaled

This is my first visit here, sorry to hear this bad news. But you should be proud of yourself, because you chose the best way to deal with your situation. You could have easily gone to depression, but you decided to face the situation, try to fix it and take the best options. And i will give you a "besharah", people see losing a job is "bab rez8 tsakar", but it's on the contrary. Losing your job will open to you Abwab el rez8=)
Good Luck to you and all ppl suffering from this crisis.
