85% of Jordanian women "support" beating of wives by husbands

I keep hearing this stupidity every few days from every unqualified source there is. Quoted as the unequivocal truth of life.

However, I haven't found a single "reliable" scientific source that presents the methodology that was taken to come up with this figure. The source of the sample, the type of questions and who the heck even sanctioned such an investigation!

Could this be a calculation error? It's VERY VERY likely that it is, but that's NOT the only error in such a flawed "study".

Now due to the "popularity" of such a statistic, I ask, No I DEMAND, from officials in Jordan to run a scientific study to actually come to the facts and key insights that need to be inferred from updated results.

It's sad to see such figures littering the internet, and just about any "semi-official" organization dealing with women's rights. Yet, NOT A SINGLE ACTION has been taken to remedy such a catastrophic figure.

Here's what I think, I think this number is not realistic, not in this time and age, but 1400 years ago when women were proudly speaking of their heritage and chanting about their freedom and how a free women cannot and will not accept to be humiliated by ANYONE. So if this is the case now, then we have a HUGE problem

I'm not saying Jordanian society doesn't suffer from Domestic violence. I think we do have endemic social problems. Violence is one of them. However, there's a difference between abuse and acceptance of this abuse. It's catastrophic if this is true, it's equally catastrophic that such a flagrant, undocumented and flawed study has not been challenged.

Therefore, I am challenging it. I want to see documents, I want to see proof, and I want a rebuttal with a representative sample from ALL OF JORDAN.

Until then, enough quoting the crappy statistic. If you're really NOT qualified to quote it, nor can you prove it. Then don't speak of it....

    Please!

I can't imagine this statistic is correct, as all of the women I know don't support such an idea.  And as a man, neither do I.

With all due respect, if UNICEF is not qualified to gather such statistic i'm not sure who is?
either way here is the statistics and the numbers come from a preliminary report by demographic and health surveys in 2007.  and its 90%
Either way its a lot easier dismissing them like any human rights report than to tackle the problem.... anyways I find it funny because i know plenty that would justify wife beatings but it doesn't matter since i know that my experiences and environment is not representative

As far as I know, Unicef didn't run the survey. They were not even remotely involved with it. Someone, smart, decided to just pick up the figure and use it.
It wasn't based on fact finding commission that followed any form of scientific method. It was "there" somehow.

Well, just like any report out there. We have the right to at least examine the findings with a little scrutiny.

And please don't confuse "human rights" with this issue. It's clearly not about violating human rights (although, the act is a violation). It's about Women accepting a beating as justifiable and allowed. Which is hard to believe. I mean, maybe some men would think it's OK. But women think it's OK is absurd.

All I'm saying is ... Let's run a proper scientific study, and get the results. This is not like things the state is trying to hide. This is a social issue that requires some action.

If I was a woman, I wouldn't sleep until ACTION is taken on this. Either prove it (and fix the society) or disprove it and find the EXACT size of the problem. Instead of throwing some arbitrary numbers in the wind!

Yes, that IS a ludicrous statistic. It's the same silliness as Saddam Hussein or Fidel Castro getting 97 percent of the "vote." Sure. Mmmhmmm.

    قبل ما تزعل خليني أشرحلك بالضبط كيف الموضوع صحيح 100% ;

I dont think this is reliable information. however, i seriously consider verbal abuse WAYYYYYYY worse, crushing a soul is harder to recover from than a few bruises and fractures. also in a community that still sees therapy as a huge taboo, crushed souls become dangerous.

w ramadan kareem to u and urs. whats left of it at least! :)
