Can you feel how certain companies and organizations appear to be conspiring against making people live a healthy life? Let me share a little experience that made me think about this more than I usually do.

After watching a documentary titled "Shrinking the world's heaviest man", where the guy weighs 1230 pounds (half a ton!), I had a sudden urge to eat nothing but carrots and celery! Seriously. I felt grossed out food.

Warning, this video is EXTREMELY graphic, please do not watch if you'd be grossed out easily by EXTREMELY obese scenes

So, I went to couple of produce shops, looking for some healthy snacks, and healthy lunches. That is not made completely of leaves. To my surprise, any half decent portion of veggies, that was ready to eat and was in the range of $6.

That's not really much for a good lunch. But when considering that this contains RAW (but properly cut) carrots, celery, cauliflower and broccoli, you will be completely surprised to compare that with a burger that is sold for 99c! (With two Meat patties, cheese, a bun with sesame on it, tomato ketchup, lattice, tomatoes, mayo  ...etc.) MANY ingredients that actually needed to be manufactured THEN cooked for people to eat them

All For 99c! While harvesting a few easy veggies, washing them, cutting them and packing those costs $6?

Sure, you can go to a farmer's market and get 2 pounds of carrots for $2 and other ingredients at a much discounted rate. But this means you will need to prepare them, clean them, portion them and then store them. I'm sure it works for many people. But for the majority, that's time in their busy schedules that they don't have

So how come there is no fast food equivalent to junk food? No drive through veggie stand? No 99c snacker? Or 99c value menu at any spot? However, all the junk food (that sells for 99c) with companies that make billions (i.e. profitable) is all over the place?

I'm positive taste is something that is developed over the period of time. That's the case with everything. A nation that is hooked on eating yummy veggies is not something farfetched. But people's taste needs to develop to reach that state. It takes time. But before all of that...

Healthy food, and snacks need to be affordable to everyone. If there is a chronic crisis that is facing Americans these days that is worse than gas prices, and the economic recession. It's the expansion of their waistline. I don't see any national campaign to battle this, or any bail out to promote healthy eating BY making it more affordable.

Something for Obama to consider, I hope.

I find it ridiculous that these days I have to pay 6 times as much for something allegedly organic, or when I buy veggies or fruits or cereal.

My grandpa laughs a lot when I tell him these things. Back in the village it's unheard of!

I always tell my friends and parents back home about the obscene prices of fruits and vegetables in the US, and I do not think they believe me. Green peppers where I live sell for $1 a piece! If you wanted to buy raw ingredients and make your own salad, it would run you more than $5 a bowl!! It seems like the desire to eat healthy in this country is not enough, you have to have the money for it too !

well i am glad to inform you guys that its the same everywhere, not only in the US, it's more or less the same over here on the other side of the planet...if you're shocked at the price of green peppers then you should consider the red or yellow ones :). At times one red pepper can be well over a dollar..and we're talking about a normal sized one...not a gigantic one lol

Yameen-shmal, I am pretty sure that the last time I was in Jordan, a small pack of prepackaged salad ( enough for 2 ) was not $4 at the grocery store. Believe me , it is outrageous here compared to other foods in the US , not to other countries.
