For god's sake, don't we have ENOUGH search engines? Isn't it clear who the winner is? Well, now we have a new contender

    Bing!

No not kidding, it's Bing, as in "Chandler Bing".

    Chandler Bing

It's one letter short of "Binge" and that's something that the web appears to be heading for. Is there such a thing as Search Binge? Yes, it's called too many search engines!

I last remember when the internet had so many search engines like that back in the 90's. You had Yahoo, Excite, AltaVista, WebCrawler, Infoseek, Lycos and a million other brands. People used to jump from one to the other just to find that it has been overtaken by "something" either affinity to certain sites or organizations. Or poor indexing, or completely irrelevant results.

Then came the amazing Google, and everyone else just .... disappeared!

Ever since, a million and one new "search engines" have blipped on the radar for a few micro seconds. And then went ... poof! Gone!

Remember Cuil? A9? and now Wolfram|Alpha, and soon Bing! For god's sake enough already!

I hate how my blog is starting to sound like "ranting about technology blog" but, oh well! I'm just allergic to these things.

On a side note, What's wrong with "Live" search? I loved that name. Didn't use it that much, (although I admit I have).

Anyway, happy binging! OH MY GOD! It just occurred to me, imagine in some alternate reality future Bing becomes the top destination for search and people will start saying things like: "I was binging it online" Oh .. the horror!

To be completely honest, I would love to take a "spin" on the new Bing. But (at the time of writing) it's STILL NOT OPEN FOR PUBLIC. Humph! Read more here, or take the visual tour here.

Bing is brought to you by Microsoft, just in case you didn't know

Wolfram|Alpha? Isn't that the one designed by that eccentric maths professor? The guy who got a PhD when he was like 12? That could be interesting. I'm not sure how I'd feel about saying "I was Wolframming it online" in public, though...
May be the developer of the new search engine has a lot opf money and don't know where to spend it, or while he is sleeping he discovered some new search algorithm in his mind that the little devil that lives inside him convinced him it's better than google

For a minute there it seemed that you are saying that because a product is popular, competitors should not enter the arena. I don't think that is healthy. Monopoly and no competition lead to stagnation, competition leads to innovation. I personally would rather live in a world of the latter and have the choice of what to use.

Now, with that out of the way :-) I do find the name "Bing" ridiculous. Just like you, my first thoughts were "Chandler Bing" and how even that character didn't like the name on the show Friends :-D. I would have been much happier had they stuck with the name "Live" or even the publicized codename "Kumo".

Finally as for Google .. I am just going to go ahead and say it .. I honestly don't see much of a difference between the results Google returns and any of the other two major search engines. In its early days Google delivered a superior performance because of two things, #1 it was one of the few engines that did automatic web crawling and indexing .. back then Yahoo built its search results manually and there was no automatic crawler. #2, they were the first to analyze back links and such. But quite honestly, between then and up to the introduction of Google's "search options" .. i didn't see considerable difference between their results and Yahoo's or Live's. I have to admit, i do like the new "search options".

What's the future of web search .. in my opinion two words "Semantic Web".

Long comment, i know .. bas ma7soobak msatel

btw .. i just looked at the video tour here: http://www.decisionengine.com/Default.html  .. it seemed promising, but its an ad .. and the funny thing is they seem to try to preemptively answer your question .. in that they say that the world doesn't need another search engine.

So it seems this new search engine is more about semantical results rather than just statistical .. i think this is great .. we need more steps in that direction .. hopefully this will encourage Google and Yahoo to step into that direction as well and we'll see another search engine revolution. I bet I bet Google has some additional semantics features that they will roll out after Bing. ... so competition does have its advantages :-)

Sure Google is still #1. But I'm not so sure Bing sucks that bad. I've been using it, and liking the results so far
