Let me be completely frank with you, I'm not a lawyer, and I don't know the specifics of the Jordanian (or any Arab) law against so called "Honor" killings. But I know one thing. Rights are not bestowed by royal decrees. Although, those help, or hinder sometimes.

What I know is that we as people need to all come together and start something. A campaign, a demonstration to protest the unjust, inhuman, and extremely degrading dishonor killing pardons that are spelled out in the law. It's time for action

I'm POSITIVE, I'm not the first to call for such action. And I'm positive I'm not going to be the last. I'm also positive that this campaign should be carried out, online and offline. In shops, streets, radio stations, on billboards, on sides of buses, in social gatherings, in TV ads, during cigarette breaks, in weddings, funerals, churches, mosques, collages, universities and schools. Focus on that last part the most. We need to educate people. In all possible ways.

Isn't it time for all of this to end? Why are we waiting for divine, *cough* royal *cough* intervention to protect our daughters, sisters and mothers. To protect our future generations, but most importantly, to protect the innocent from the looseness of the law which allows people to walk away from paying judge, jury and executioner based on mere suspicion?

Don't get me wrong. I'm not calling for people to spread vice. I'm not asking parents to auction their daughters for prostitution. I'm not saying it's OK to go out and sleep around. I'm not saying all of that. In fact, I'm against all of that.

What I'm calling for is a national campaign to better educate people, raise their awareness and let them understand that there is no such a thing as honor killing. It's shameful killing, dishonor killing.

Many think that honor killing has it's roots in the Islamic Shariah. Quite frankly nothing can be farther from the truth. In fact, Islam doesn't take people's lives as award for committing adultery without proof. Not only that, but I have very strong feeling that a person can not be charged with adultery.

That last part might be a shock for many, but bear with me, and I'll explain my point of view on this matter.

First, It's almost impossible to successfully charge someone with adultery. You really need 4 people to see them in the act as witnesses. A single witness isn't enough. Now unless the two people involved are doing this in public, it's quite impossible to get 4 people to witness them "in the act!". (And by the way, anyone charging someone with adultery and can't prove it has a very severe punishment, these are no joking matters)

Second, we know from the way the prophet handled the woman who confessed to adultery (She was given 3 chances to just, walk away) but she insisted on being punished. Her repentance was praised by the prophet who eventually submitted to her will, and evidence and allowed the "Had" (Or the punishment) to be carried out.

Third, we're more encouraged to cover-up our mishaps. Not expose them. So if someone was to make a mistake, and no body knew, and this person repented. Then there's nothing wrong with hiding it. God knows, and there might be punishment for it in the hereafter. But people shouldn't brag about their sins.

Finally, It's not allowed under Islam for a single unmarried person to be charged with adultery even with ALL the conditions above. The punishment for any unmarried person (male or females) is few flogs (or the modern equivalent), and draw a distinction here. These are not the medieval flogs with metal and glass tips. These are sticks and raised only to the level of the shoulder. More like public "tapping" than real flogging.

As you can see, religion isn't really keen on taking the lives of people who sin. God loves sinners, who repent. I know that many scholars have taken most of this stuff out of context and looked for ways to make the punishment even more severe, with more on the spot justice and the likes. But that shouldn't be the case, and these scholars should seriously consider their positions.

Let me give you an example of how the prophet dealt with a case of suspicion. Aisha, his wife was accused of having an affair. Even by the closest Sahaba (loosly apostles). Did he just go out and murder her on suspicion? (He was the strongest man in Madina, and had he done that, no one would have said anything. Not only that, many people volunteered to take out such actions). Not only that, in that Arab setting, murdering women was "the proper way" to end all arguments. As many of the poets of the times have glorified how the "Fine honor isn't saved until blood is spilled on it's sides". That was the mentality...

But, what did the prophet do? He was patient. Sad, but patient. He took his time to contemplate the matter, and didn't submit to his "honor saving temporary insanity" or extreme anger. He was not God, he was a human like all of us.

These are simple examples that make it absolutely clear that Murdering women for suspicion of adultery (most of the time, not even adultery) should be abolished.

As I said, it doesn't take a Royal decree to have this change come true. It's time for ALL OF US, to take action and stop this blood bath.

-- Every year, over 20 women lose their lives on suspicion of infidelity in Jordan alone.

It's a sensitive topic, and I am not sure that all Jordanians would like your take, or my opinion - an outsider - on this.

However I do believe that there is nothing gained from honor killing. A daughter you've been raising for so many years, and all the memories, is severed because of suspicion.

Even if she did have sex, there are ways to deal with this. Love, care, compassion, forgiveness, and education. We all make mistakes, grand and small, we live and learn and experience.

Had it been the tribal/cultural practice, ‘honor killing’ would exist amongst the Arabs only. But honor killing does happen amongst the non-Arab Muslims also. Also Arabs belonged to all religions (Muslims, Christians, Jews, Bhai etc.) would practice honor killing with equal prevalence. Fact of the matter is—no Arab Christians, Jews or Bahai etc do practice this uncivilized act at all. Only Arab Muslims do practice this heinous act with a regular pattern.

"Many think that honor killing has it's roots in the Islamic Shariah."

You will be surprised to find it in Koran and countless shaheh hadeeths about dishonor killing. And yes...she should be stoned to death instead.

Here is to name a few :

Quran- 4:15 “If any of your women are guilty of lewdness, take the evidence of four (reliable) witness from amongst you against them; if they testify, confine them to houses until death do claim them. Or God ordain for them some (other) way.”

Quran-24:2 “The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication—flog each of them with hundred stripes: Let no compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by God, if ye believe in God and the last day.”

    Saheeh Bukhari
    Volume 2, Book 23, Number 413:
    Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar :

The Jew brought to the Prophet a man and a woman from amongst them who have committed (adultery) illegal sexual intercourse. He ordered both of them to be stoned (to death), near the place of offering the funeral prayers beside the mosque."

    Volume 3, Book 49, Number 860:
Narrated Abu Huraira and Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani:

A bedouin came and said, "O Allah's Apostle! Judge between us according to Allah's Laws." His opponent got up and said, "He is right. Judge between us according to Allah's Laws." The bedouin said, "My son was a laborer working for this man, and he committed illegal sexual intercourse with his wife. The people told me that my son should be stoned to death; so, in lieu of that, I paid a ransom of one hundred sheep and a slave girl to save my son. Then I asked the learned scholars who said, "Your son has to be lashed one-hundred lashes and has to be exiled for one year." The Prophet said, "No doubt I will judge between you according to Allah's Laws. The slave-girl and the sheep are to go back to you, and your son will get a hundred lashes and one year exile." He then addressed somebody, "O Unais! go to the wife of this (man) and stone her to death" So, Unais went and stoned her to death.

    Volume 3, Book 50, Number 885:
Narrated Abu Huraira and Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani:

A bedouin came to Allah's Apostle and said, "O Allah's apostle! I ask you by Allah to judge My case according to Allah's Laws." His opponent, who was more learned than he, said, "Yes, judge between us according to Allah's Laws, and allow me to speak." Allah's Apostle said, "Speak." He (i .e. the bedouin or the other man) said, "My son was working as a laborer for this (man) and he committed illegal sexual intercourse with his wife. The people told me that it was obligatory that my son should be stoned to death, so in lieu of that I ransomed my son by paying one hundred sheep and a slave girl. Then I asked the religious scholars about it, and they informed me that my son must be lashed one hundred lashes, and be exiled for one year, and the wife of this (man) must be stoned to death." Allah's Apostle said, "By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, I will judge between you according to Allah's Laws. The slave-girl and the sheep are to be returned to you, your son is to receive a hundred lashes and be exiled for one year. You, Unais, go to the wife of this (man) and if she confesses her guilt, stone her to death." Unais went to that woman next morning and she confessed. Allah's Apostle ordered that she be stoned to death.

    Volume 4, Book 56, Number 829:
    Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar:

The Jews came to Allah's Apostle and told him that a man and a woman from amongst them had committed illegal sexual intercourse. Allah's Apostle said to them, "What do you find in the Torah (old Testament) about the legal punishment of Ar-Rajm (stoning)?" They replied, (But) we announce their crime and lash them." Abdullah bin Salam said, "You are telling a lie; Torah contains the order of Rajm." They brought and opened the Torah and one of them solaced his hand on the Verse of Rajm and read the verses preceding and following it. Abdullah bin Salam said to him, "Lift your hand." When he lifted his hand, the Verse of Rajm was written there. They said, "Muhammad has told the truth; the Torah has the Verse of Rajm. The Prophet then gave the order that both of them should be stoned to death. ('Abdullah bin 'Umar said, "I saw the man leaning over the woman to shelter her from the stones."

    Volume 6, Book 60, Number 79:
    Narrated 'Abdullah bin Umar:

The Jews brought to the Prophet a man and a woman from among them who had committed illegal sexual intercourse. The Prophet said to them, "How do you usually punish the one amongst you who has committed illegal sexual intercourse?" They replied, "We blacken their faces with coal and beat them," He said, "Don't you find the order of Ar-Rajm (i.e. stoning to death) in the Torah?" They replied, "We do not find anything in it." 'Abdullah bin Salam (after hearing this conversation) said to them. "You have told a lie! Bring here the Torah and recite it if you are truthful." (So the Jews brought the Torah). And the religious teacher who was teaching it to them, put his hand over the Verse of Ar-Rajm and started reading what was written above and below the place hidden with his hand, but he did not read the Verse of Ar-Rajm. 'Abdullah bin Salam removed his (i.e. the teacher's) hand from the Verse of Ar-Rajm and said, "What is this?" So when the Jews saw that Verse, they said, "This is the Verse of Ar-Rajm." So the Prophet ordered the two adulterers to be stoned to death, and they were stoned to death near the place where biers used to be placed near the Mosque. I saw her companion (i.e. the adulterer) bowing over her so as to protect her from the stones.

    Volume 7, Book 63, Number 195:
    Narrated Jabir:

A man from the tribe of Bani Aslam came to the Prophet while he was in the mosque and said, "I have committed illegal sexual intercourse." The Prophet turned his face to the other side. The man turned towards the side towards which the Prophet had turned his face, and gave four witnesses against himself. On that the Prophet called him and said, "Are you insane?" (He added), "Are you married?" The man said, 'Yes." On that the Prophet ordered him to be stoned to the death in the Musalla (a praying place). When the stones hit him with their sharp edges and he fled, but he was caught at Al-Harra and then killed.

And your point is? I'm not going to get in a contest in giving examples of non Arabs practicing such murders. This is not my goal. My goal is to see these unjust laws removed. Smearing Islam or any other religion should remain out of the question. In fact, I think we have a misinterpretation of the Islamic law, something that can be reinterpreted with modern view and applied accordingly.. Quoting it in the form you have doesn't negate what I have mentioned above. There is a documented case of a woman who was put to death but only after she confessed, showed proof and REQUESTED to be judged three times. This means that this is how it should be. People need to ask for the punishment for it to be carried out. There are also occasions that that law was taken literally. Either way, there was a process. People asked for judgment, and punishment wasn't carried out on the spot by a single person in any form.

I'm well aware of the Quran, and can interpret it correctly, unlike many who actually look at any negative word and forget the positive context. As I said, my goal is to educate people that such acts are really not acceptable and should no longer be allowed. There's no pardon for premeditated murder.

My point is dis-Honor Killing is in accordance with Islamic teaching.  It is the natural outcome of the Islamic ethos of misogyny.

"I'm well aware of the Quran, and can interpret it correctly"

There are hundreds of Quran exegesises (tafseer), each written by extinguished scholar. Not clear, which one of these, is the correct interpretation of Quran. I wonder if you wrote your own Quranic tafseer or merely follow one of them and self proclaimed that you can interpret it correctly.

please don't try to read the quran and hadeeth then take it out of its context just so you can satisfy your hate of islam. if you read the post well then you should have read the story of Aisha and the prohet may peace be upon him. Its a known story in the islam and there is even parts of quran that talks about it. All of the stuff you wrote from bukhari are provments of rajm which is a punishment in islam for those who comitted adultrey while they were married and tit was proved they did it so plese don't confuse it with honour crimes. honour crimes has no roots in islam its just the result of tribal stupid laws who were given the freedom to put there laws and they say it from islam.
if islam laws were applied this world would be much better than its now

I really can not believe this story, and I thought a lot about it, and about the reason that makes muslims believe such story. The only outcome that came, is the same reason that makes some of us kill their daughter or sister when suspecting she committed adultery. We do not respect human.

Have you ever thought of how cruel this punishment is? do you think that any religion can come with such cruelness? it is much more cruel than killing by hanging or by other ways. it is just as cruel as what the american soldiers did in Abu Ghreib. Maybe we should not take this "documented history" (that is wrongly labeled as Hadeeth) that seriously. specially when it contradicts many things.

Again people, the point here is that we want to progress our life, and laws. We don't need to keep on blaming everything on history. When history has both sides.

What I am trying to say is to people who justify their murder as being "Islamic", I'm telling them, no it's not. So they really need to stop their murders. (and I mean the people who commit the murders and not the people who just blame it on religion)
As for the punishment. I'm not saying we need to follow these to the letter. We can acknowledge that it's not allowed, and there needs to be punishment. But it should be progressive and suitable to the times.

We all need to reach an agreement that many things are here to stay and not anyone would be able to remove them. Attacking religion isn't going to help either. We need to progress the understanding through education and proper direction on all levels. Come together not find ways to move apart further
    md
pleae when it comes of a hadeeth you don't bilieve in you don't say thatu don't believe in it, you look for it then give u r proof that this hadeeth is right or wrong, Islam isn't build on the facts that one like or doesn't like. there is in no way that punishing adultrey will lead to honour crimes, killing without justice in islam is forbidden and honour crimes comes under that categorey
    [ 5431 ، 6465 ]
so you see killing is forbidden in islam.
as for the hadeeth of the woman who comitted adultrey it's in saheh moslem

Hey On, don't forget women sex slave trade which thrives in West. It seems you gave up black slavery since the cotton business is no longer lucrative but now you discovered that kidnapping and raping women as a business is good for your bottom line. At least honor killing harms fewer than 20 women per year aon average. But the West fules a sex slave trade that destroys the lives of millions of innocent women most die from AIDS after being forced to have unprotected sex. Not to mention the mass slaughter of Arab and Muslim women by American and other White men in Iraq, Somal, and Afghanistan. Bottom line, shove your lectures up yours before you give them to others.

What does any of that has to do with anything? 20 women murdered is 20 women too many. Having people do something wrong elsewhere in the world doesn't justify allowing murderers to walk away without proper punishment.

I'm not lecturing you or anyone, I'm trying to save lives and progress. Not fuel more hatred. I'm Jordanian, and I love Jordan and I'm not saying things that are inapplicable. I'm talking about improving what we have for you, me, our children and the innocent people who are murdered in cold blood on suspicion only.

This doesn't mean that I don't object to the objectification of women in any possible way. Looks like this is your first time reading for me. Read my other ideas and you will know where I stand

Thank you for the blog.  I wish more men would stick up for women's rights.  I also wish these stories appeared in the Arabic press not just from Rana Husseini's reports.  As you say, this should not be a religious argument, it is common humanity to treat all humans with dignity and respect.  The majority of victims of so called 'honour' killings are murdered because relatives 'suspected' immoral behaviour.  Why isn't the male killed for treating a female with disrespect?  Why is the burden of honour always on the female?  This is a never ending tragic saga.  T

    T, I totally understand... It's a sad situation.
We don't want to see anyone killed. Not women, not men. We don't want people to continue these acts that defy religion, logic and basic human rights. We want people to sober up and come of age. All of these need to stop

It's sad to see people justifying their murders with tradition. For all I care these traditions can go to hell!

Guys, the fact is today dishonor killing happened in the countries which follow Islamic laws. The more strict they follow Sharia the more often they impose HK. See nohonor.org and icahk.com.

A brother raped his sister and then their mother killed her to "save" family honor. Muslim men have very low self esteem but they compensate the smallness of their selfhood by inflating their ego. If you are a women related to them, they feel as if they own you. Whatever you do affects their gigantic ego. They are possessive and feel dishonored if you make a "dazzling display" (Quran 33:33) of yourself. And of course if you are deflowered, this is an affront to their humongous pride. The damage is irreparable and the only way to restore that pride is to get rid of you.

You said I took Quran out of context without you elaborated it. The Prophet was not sure whether or not Ayesha did adultery and better for him not to punish her to get her father Abou Bakr supports. Ayesha was Prophet's beloved wife and a prominent man's daughter. But how about those ordinary women Prophet ordered to be stoned to death? He decided those deadly punishment only based on someone's report to him, without investigate it further. Learn those hadeeths.

I am against hate not faith. Women suffer this barbaric act way too long.

MJ that's absolutely not true. The prophet was an example to follow in patience, kindness and wisdom. If he waited, you will justify it with something. That women in the Haidth wasn't even known or from a prominent tribe. Yet, he patiently allowed her to go away for 3 years. It doesn't get any clearer. There is no way to win this. If he let her go or not, he’s indicted in your view.

Again, don't blame the religion here. It's not the religion. It's people. Because that is the bottom line we want to change. We don’t want to insult, ridicule or belittle any faith. Especially when it’s completely against such murders. But that is not the point.

And MJ, stop accusing Islam of this stuff, if you have something worth saying that helps the issue, please do. Otherwise, try to restrain your needless comments and accusations against Islam

I am sorry Qwaider, I promise this will be my last comment.

Qwaider, don't you think of why the so called ulemas, scholars, muftis, shaiks, mullahs or whatever you call them, why don't they issue a single fatwa to prohibit dis-HK. Instead, they issue fatwa about music, playing chess, TV programs and others simply things but failed to make a fatwa about this ultimate important dishonor killing?

Why do ulemas let HK happen? over and over again? Can't they make a fatwa against it? The only reason of why ulemas and scholars never issue a fatwa against HK only because it is in accordance with Sharia Law.

See your country laws, see other Islamic countries laws. They all allow HK. Their Sharia laws never punish and will let free a father or a brother who kill their own daughters or mother. It is unpunishable. Honor Killing is unpunishable according to countries following Sharia Law.

Under Article 340 Jordanian Law, any man who kills or attacks his wife or any of his female relatives in the act of committing adultery or in an “unlawful bed” benefits from a reduction in penalty.

Let us see, will the jurist put this man in jail for more than some months? Let us see, will his family and friends cheer him like a hero when he left the jail?

Thank you for letting me commenting on your blog.

Qwaider, belated thanks for this post. We need to work together to end this blight, this evil practice.
    MJ:
Whats worng with you, am sorry but are you stupid or something, why are you talking religious punishment out of their contxext and connect them with honour killing, in islam punishment of adultrey needes four witnesses so don't coonect it with honour killing which is wrong in islam becuase its a killing with out justice. btw the law you from jordanian law isn't based on islam, there is another law in islam concernig one seeing his partners in adultrey and its result is divorce so please stop attacking islam with that.
the subject here is that we all make a standup specially muslims to go against this stupid act that is only based on tribal and misunderstandig of the jordanian laws and islam law.

There's no "honor" in murdering a relative, especially a smaller and weaker relative who deserves protection even more than usual. "Honor" murders are the ultimate violent expression of dominance, hate and intolerance. It usually happens in Muslim cultures, and it invariably makes the culture look bad. I'm surprised that the more moderate majorities of those societies have not insisted that such barbaric practices stop.
