If you're not aware of the term "Pink slip", it means, someone got laid off. They were fired or "Tfannash" as they would say in the Gulf area.
Rick, my cross-dressing, retirement age, depressed, single neighbor was handed his pink-slip last week. The poor man was 1 year away from retirement, now he doesn't know what to do
After working for 30 years at his company, waking up at 3AM to be on site by 4AM. He, along with at least 3 million other Americans are now jobless, in what appears to be, the greatest depression since the great depression.
Let me tell you this, the situation is so bleak, that you really can't start to imagine the real dimensions of this global catastrophe, trust me, this tidal wave is heading OUT from its epicenter in the industrialized world and it will swipe away more than we can imagine
No matter where you are in this fragile world. Strange though, Depression in both meanings is spelled the same way!
I don't want to be too pessimistic about all of this. Many have already talked a lot about how horrible the economy is about to get. Many don't realize how horrible it will get and don't even believe it will affect them.
Well, rest assured, it WILL affect YOU, and everyone else you know or don't know.
Just like the ripples in a pool. The concentric circles soon start crossing and worse volatility is expected as the ripples travel at the speed of business around the world.
So which industries are least affected? Here's what I think..
- Fast food industry.
People gotta eat, no matter how poor they get.
- Pharmaceuticals (And medical sector in general)
With stress and depression related diseases on the rise. these folks are likely to be doing very well
- Natural resources
It's getting more expensive to extract, while getting less profitable to sell. But it's still making money. Unless the whole industry dependant on that resource goes bust
- Services and utilities
People can live without a new car, but not without heat, water, sewage, electricity ...etc
- Schools, Academia, childcare and elderly care
It doesn't matter what happens in other industries, these are always in demand. Although, many people can no longer afford these
It's going to get really dark before things start looking up. This year started on a low note and it will likely take some time for things to turn around. So sit tight, keep your head low. Don't make any big changes, and just try to live through it
It's tempting these days to buy a new car, or get a new house. With the prices as low as they are right now, the chance to get a great deal is very high. But unless you're financial future is somehow guaranteed just sit tight and let this calamity pass
In the mean time, I'm going to try and comfort Rick. He tried to sell his Hummer, but no one is willing to pay more than 10K for it, and I just continue to feel so sorry having warned him when he bought that piece of junk.
Memories....
I hope you find good luck regardless of what happens in your company
