Last time I saw a movie with so much ad-placement for Microsoft, I was watching Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson in the "The Island", with Microsoft Search booths in the street, and a bunch of other Microsoft crap thrown all over the place
Being the sci-fi person that I am, I couldn't but enjoy movie. But placed advertising was all over the place. Microsoft Laptops (Does Microsoft really make laptops that look like Macbooks but have a vista Logo where the Apple is?), Microsoft Virtual Earth, Microsoft Surface, with some cool (really awesome) simulations running on it (Maioush and me were drooling over one the other day when we visited Microsoft's museum, we want one so badly)
But seriously, couldn't the dudes have picked a better movie? I mean, I loved it because I'm a hardcore sci-fi person. But even though the movie had a great message. It was easily forgettable.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not against placed ads in movies. Everyone does that, from Pepsi, to IBM to Apple to Google, to Cisco. Everyone does it. But at least, most PICK good winning titles to have their brand smeared all over the 40 foot wide screen.
The movie is about this extra terrestrial who comes to earth with a message of doom. And naturally, everything that we have ever invented has been tried in vein to stop this vastly superior force.
It would have been wonderful had there not been a plague of biblical proportions (literally, think Moses in Egypt).. Anyway, the movie was a good couple hours of great visual effects and MICROSOFT advertising.
8/10 on the Qwaider scale (just cuz it's hardcore GREEN sci-fi), otherwise subtract 2.5 :)
I watched the movie a couple of days ago, the only thing i noticed was the microsoft surface, anyhow, I didn't enjoy te movie that much, I was concentrating more on the stupid idea the movie had.
The only reason I watched it was because of Robert Knepper, the guy from prison break known as Tbag who is a great actor but he hasn't managed to put his acting skills to the max in his role.
I actually liked the island and somehow didn't notice the micrsoft stuff, but when I'm enjoying a movie I'm err immersed!
Btw if you can't get surface, you may consider an HP TouchSmart IQ816t.
You can always place it horizontal if you prefer. I think one thing surface can do that it can't is recognize many simultaneous touches to different parts of the surface at the same time, but hey it's close enough.
I was going to write an exactly the same blog post after watching that film last night. I was also going to start off by saying the last time i saw such Microsoft product placement was in "The Island".
anyway let me tell you what i spotted.
1st thing, Microsofts Halo 3 Poster in childs room 2. Microsofts Halo 3 Mastercheif figurine seconds after that. 3.Windows vista on a laptop during Nasa presentation 4. Microsoft Surface (this time an actual one unlike the Islands digital table) featuring the Vista logo 5. The news reports that the sec. of state slides trhough with hand: MSNBC Video
i think thats all i spotted. was hoping to see the zune after all that.
Memories....
