If you do something without passion, it will be bland, tasteless and very "ordinary"

That was the opening statement I gave to a bunch of fresh meat for the grinder (aka new Employees), as I try to communicate something that has been bothering me for years. People doing the "job" lifelessly. With absolutely no commitment or passion. Just a "job", to "pay the bills" and "get you out of the house in the morning"

Truth is, this is not just for people looking for jobs, just take this concept and graft it to anything you can imagine in your life. Have passion in what you study, not just to get a degree or to get married with it. But because YOU LOVE what you're learning. (If you're not "loving it" then really, don't do it!)

When you talk to people who studied Engineering. Or Physics and ask them, "Why have you decided to study X" their answer would be "Because Y wasn't available" then. You have a classical case of people doing something lifelessly. With absolutely no passion. No conviction and absolutely no aspirations, sans, maybe ... maybe .. making a buck at something they don't like or even care about!

Honestly, we can't all work at the jobs that we like. But we should at least have a plan to get to that job that we want. Even if the current job is just a step in that direction. We can definitely excel at it more than we would at a better paying job that we hate!

Although, my friends would say, "give me the money first, and I'll worry about liking the job" or "I'll like the job, if it gives me the money that makes me love it" in other words, just a form of noble-prostitution. But hey, it pays the bills!

Truth is, people who really love what they do, end up innovating in that field and improving it. Breaking new feat and causing paradigm shifts in how people look at these careers that they pick for themselves

These might not pay well. These might not even be able to support a person, then perhaps it should be practiced on the side, or as a hobby. But, don't let go of your passion.

I would understand it if people weren't able to get the job they want. But what I can't understand is people not following their dream and passion studying the subject they are most passionate about. In this day and age, there is no more "My father wanted me to be a doctor", there is no more "I wouldn't be able to make a living as an Artists" or "Who would pay for my music". Fact is, THE WORLD IS FILLED WITH ENGINEERS, DOCTORS, COMPUTER and IT FOLKS and we REALLY NEED EVERYTHING ELSE! WE NEED other fields to be pursued. Literature, Arts, other sciences are begging for people

So follow your passion, wherever it might lead you. You might regret not making enough money. But you will never regret not following your "true calling" and have the "What if" tape played in your head every single day of your life!

    PS, it's NEVER too late!

    Memories....

Wow!Quidar you took the words right out of my mouth. Not really, but it's what I think about quite often and like to talk about.
And what I don't understand is when I ask people what they love with passion, most of the time they don't seem to have a clue about what they have passion for, like I have for what I do.
First off I think whether passion makes a difference would depend on the job. No passion would be required for janitorial services, or factory line worker.

I see passion less of a problem as basic honesty. I see people stealing a pay-check barely working one third of the hours they get paid for.

Having said that, I'm one of the people who would study music if money wasn't an object, and I don't think it's unrealistic to say I'm going into IT because most musicians get paid peanuts (the exception being rock stars, prodigy concert pianists, and world famous tenors). This was true even for the classical greats like Mozart and Beethoven.

This doesn't mean I'm not passionate about IT, just that I'm not "most passionate" about it.
a bit fat sighhhhhhh ya Samer... 2 degrees wil ba5t daye3 lol i think i will go back to school when money isnt a factor and get the degree that i actually wanna work by!

we think money is all we're after but we r so mistaken. nothing beats going to work with peace of mind and a passion for what we do!

    just an after thought

not everyone sam can actually afford to follow their dreams. while the utopia you set is admirable, the reality is that while there isn't a lot of "my dad wants me to be a doc", at the end of the day we have to pay bills, plus whatever other responsibilities we are burdened with (financially or otherwise).

the other thing is that while the above is true, often one cannot see a way out of their mess so that they could follow their dream and/or do not have the guidance. and not everyone is willing to offer guidance too.
Actually, I did say that not everyone can follow their dreams. But I'm a firm believer that we shouldn't quit without giving a hell of a fight
But, If I could reiterate it again, and to stay consistent with what I told you. Then it would be, "Have passion, and follow your dreams. But if you can't then have passion in what you're doing right now"

    better?

    Yup, much better :)
In other words, be the best in the world grass cutter, dishwasher, wife, mother, etc.
I totally agree with you on that people  should do what they love and are passionate about. It definitely makes them excel in what they do. Additionally let's not forget that there are those who pick a field or an area out of necessity (or at random) and then fall in love with it and excel.

So yeah i agree, at the end, whatever you do in life, make sure you love it. If you are doing something for years and you really don't enjoy it, then leave it .. it's not happening .. you won't enjoy it later if you've spent years not enjoying it.

Ahh .. this brings me back to those many many nights of often heated discussions i used to have with some of my friends who were studying something because their parents asked them to, or because "society expects them to".
I studied computer information systems just because it was the "in-thing" and then I realized its not for me.. I tried other fields until I finally found what I liked.. It is never too late..
