While I was waiting for my Latte to get properly -burnt- by the underpaid, under-trained, over worked and over dressed barista at one of the "upscale" cafe's, a taste no Starbucks junkie would know, but that's not really the point. I started thinking to myself how things would appear if we took them in grander scale, globally. Even simple things that many people aspire for like Women's rights, Democracy and what not. What would happen if we crossed global sense with things that we're really spending our lives trying to achieve?
I took the first sip of my soy-hazelnut-latte and could feel nothing but the froth of soy-milk. Although, I'm not really lactose intolerant, I just can't down warm or hot milk, it gives me a number of undesirable "side effects", which flew in tight formation of my thoughts as in, things that we want that have side effects worse than the original idea...
You'd think, what nonsense is this dude blabbering about... But bear with me for a moment and you'll see what I mean!
Let's say, we have this global democracy, faithfully representing the population of planet earth. With every possible color in the rainbow. Can you imagine how "modern" ideas would be treated? For example, women's rights? Or how older ideas inherited over the millennia like Islamic Shariah, Religious doctrines, Confucian code, or Buddhist teachings?
Chances are, of the 6.6 billion people on the face of this planet, the vast majority would be asking for things, that might be frowned upon by the few fortunate enough to be enlightened with "modern" thoughts. Especially when it comes to women rights, equality, and gay rights. In fact, that last part will barely register.
If we take democracy on a global scale and put everything for a vote, chances are, more Islamic rulings, (no matter how much we disagree with some of them) would be passed as laws. Just like so many laws that people HATE manage to end up being passed because they have enough people asking for them! Of course, I don't mean to single Islam out here. But I'm using this just as an example.
Someone once said, if 1 billion people asked for something wrong, would that make it right? The answer here isn't a simple yes, or no! If so many people are asking for the same thing then, it must be important to them! Or at least something others need to respect! It's just fascinating how many people think they're self righteous and -assume- they know everything about everything. Including what's best for ...others!
Throughout my life, there has been so many moments when I wanted something with so much passion that I ended up fighting to get it, or achieve it. Only to later on discover that it wasn't really the best thing for me, but just sort-of felt like the right thing to do at the time. That's measuring on my very limited experience in this life. Just imagine getting someone to know and understand what's good for a billion-others!
I guess, everything that makes sense that we know, might not even be applicable on a global scale, exactly how the Newtonian physics fails to explain things in a universal way..
But hey, we're still learning! -as a species- that is..
I wonder, would there ever be a social Large Hadron Collider?
This coffee is turning cold... [gulp] .... Ahhh!
Memories....
Anyway, the will of the majority isn't necessarily a good thing. Both George W and Dubya were elected democratically. Palestinians elected Hamas even though their gov was never likely to succeed globally, so it wasn't really in their interest to elect them.
Anyway, the enlightened few you speak of are more likely to try to hijack the will of the majority, but at the very least if it's a social welfare democracy all those starving people will be fed which seems like a good thing, then they have children, and pretty soon there's not enough food. Hmmm I shouldn't write at 1AM, how did this end up about food :)
second, if christianity really had a more liberal majority, we wouldn't have been cursed with dubya!
and it's important to remember that US doesn't represent all the christian world.
anyway, it's all theoretical
I have a question does anybody know what happened to the good quality coffee of the day that one could get at Stabucks in the late 90's or so?
I ordered the coffee of the day venti, black with no room for milk, the other day and was surprized, to say the least, that it did not taste as good as the coffee I make at home, let alone the coffee I used to treat myself to once in a while, back 10 years ago or so, because of the quality, great taste and aroma.
With the economy the way,I for one, will chose not be pay $1.70 for a cup of venti black coffee at Starbucks when I cannot even enjoy.
As a Seattle native, I an tell you with great authority that Starbucks coffee really sucks. Especially when you're blessed with so many amazing places around you that will treat you to the best coffee you can imagine and for less
I blame it on couple of things, corporate characters taking over, and the stupid "blend" that causes your coffee to taste like tire rubber! It doesn't have the richness or taste of any of it's components that may or may not be good though.
I also think they use more Robusta coffee and less Arabica. It's cheaper and more potent, most people will not tell the difference anyway!
Did you know Obama's father was an atheist born in a Muslim Kenyan Family, and his mom was also an atheist born to a Christian family from Kansas. He claims he was raised as a christian (for political reasons), but his mom apparently gave them all the holy books and told them to decide for themselves!
Anyway here's to hoping for the first Atheist US President. He was against the war in Iraq to start with (as opposed to now that everyone knows it was mistake) and is willing to negotiate with anyone unlike the fanatics.
Did you read the latest news ? Palin/Mccain are accusing Obama of Paling up with terrorists because he happened to serve on the board of a charity to help the poar with a University of Chicago professor who used to be an anti-vietnam war militant (bombing statues, doing sit-ins and such).
Meanwhile they're ignoring the fact that Mccain was accepting bribes back in the late 80s a few years after becoming a senator.
He was good friends with Keating. Keting made large contributions to mccain. Mccain's family flew on keating's jet. Mccain's wife and father in law invested millions in Keating's mall. Finally Mccain and 4 other senators (also on keating's payroll) including the astronaut John Glenn. They tried to help Keating get away with swindling old pensioners out of their money. Keating ended up convicted for fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy, and the 5 senators tried to help him get away. Glen and Mccain only got a slap on the wrist for "exercising poor judgment", talk about corruption.
Anyhow if being a crook isn't enough, he's also 72, so there's a good chance Ms Wasilla 1984 will become president. Now that's scary.

I might disagree with you on politics and religion, but not on the important stuff :)
It would always stay polite!
Lek ya jama3a it is an abstract word! It's meaning is relative, let alone how it is implemented!
Iraq was a big mistake and this investment in fueling it contributed signifcantly to the currect credit crunch! Bush is either the stupidest or the smartest person on earth! If you consider him a person!
Global democracy isn't a utopia. It is a nightmare. Basically the world will live in a constant trial-and-error basis except that instead of having controlled environments and lessons passed on, the whole population would have to live with the consequences of the majority, even if the difference is one person!
You're absolutely right about democracy. It's the tyranny of the majority. Far better to have a benevolent dictatorship. Everything will be fine after the Martian invasion, you'll see. ;-)
