Folks, I have a decision to make... your help is appreciated...

Next Tuesday, September 16th. I've been invited to watch two movies, I'm more inclined towards watching Towelhead. I wonder if my readers can help me decide.

To help you, here are quick notes about the two, let me know what you think

Towelhead

Based on the critically acclaimed novel by Alicia Erian and written for the screen and directed by Alan Ball (creator of HBO's "Six Feet Under" and Oscar® winner for Best Original Screenplay for AMERICAN BEAUTY), TOWELHEAD stars Aaron Eckhart (THE DARK KNIGHT), Toni Collette, Maria Bello, Peter Macdissi, and newcomer Summer Bishil.

Jasira wants something she can't define; attention, love, acceptance or a normal life. Unfortunately she doesn't know the right way to find it. When Jasira's mother exiles her to Houston to live with her strict, quick-to-anger Lebanese father, she quickly learns what aspects of herself to suppress in front of him. In private, however, she conducts her sexual awakening with all the false confidence that pop culture and her neighbor's magazines have provided. The result is a funny, dark, bold and harrowing look at the confusion and misguided exploration of youth in America's track houses, public schools and suburban wastelands

Lakeview Terrace

A young couple (Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington) has just moved into their California dream home when they become the target of their next-door neighbor, who disapproves of their interracial relationship. A stern, single father, this tightly wound LAPD officer (Samuel L. Jackson) has appointed himself the watchdog of the neighborhood. His nightly foot patrols and overly watchful eyes bring comfort to some, but he becomes increasingly harassing to the newlyweds. These persistent intrusions into their lives ultimately turn tragic when the couple decides to fight back.

Now the reason I want to watch Towelhead is mainly because of it's relation to my culture, and the acclaimed novel by Alicia Erian. Even the name itself feels offensive a bit. But let's wait and see before we judge. The father looks exactly like my cousin.

As for Lakeview Terrace, I want to see it because of the interracial controversy behind it. So it might be very interesting as well

I vote Lakeview too, not sure I like the plot, and I have an inherent disposition to the name Jasirah! and the other option has Samuel L, enough said!

True, somehow even more than the actor/actress's appearance, what I value most in determining how convincing they are to me is their voice. For instance Samuel's voice is intense, I can still remember his voice in pulp fiction:
"I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers"!!!
Action just comes naturally to mind.

Compare that to Morgan Freeman's calm down to earth fatherly sounding voice imparting every day common sense wisdom. Morgan's defining and favorite role to me is in Shawshank Redemption. His narration of the escape is the most memorable part, and the climax for the whole movie!

You do know that you CAN watch one and then the other on it's next screening!

You can let Maioush watch one and you the other and you can discuss it in groups.

Worst case scenario, pray estikhara!

But I see you're more inclined to Towelhead and you merely need the public's reassurance, so just go for it

I personally like to check out movies that do not try to stereotype or typecast us into specific roles and fixed ideologies (mainly because i don't want to give my money in encouragement to those who stereotype us).

However, Towelhead seems more about the "cultural conflict" of a teenage girl, and that doesn't interest me that much. Lakeview Terrace also failed to grab my attention.

Personally, i wouldn't volunteer to watch either of them :-). But if i had to pick one, i'll go with Towelhead.

(i know, not much help .. sorry)

I want to see both. But I think I'm getting more inclined towards Towelhead because it's not backed by a mega Hollywood production and the release is going to be limited. While Lakeview Terrace has a wide opening.
Now Historically, movies like Lakeview Terrace are the ones that get more more hits because they're made for the general public. But even though they're good, they don't usually pack much art or decent acting or anything. Just a lot of cash pumped into the production of a mediocre story.
