I gave up, many years ago on finding Arabs in the US that are moderate!

Now, I KNOW moderates exist! But they're completely overrun by the HUGE masses who appear to gravitate one extreme or the other!

They're either suffocating me with religion!

Or completely denouncing anything, and EVERYTHING of value or morality!

    Is there a way out!?

Oh Moderate Arabs, where art thou!?

When I used to live back home, the majority of Arabs I knew were so moderate, easy going, funny, filled with life, loved adventure yet held to their values and morals.

Then, I came to the US, where that majority of wonderful, fun loving, law abiding, virtue embracing segment vanished! Now, I either have to suffocate under the weight of extreme religious practices or complete devolution of all that matters.

I find myself torn between the two. You can only be with one OR the other. You can't just live happily like we used to live back home! Where a single sitting would have a rainbow of just about every possible belief system.

I really wish I knew what happens to Arabs when they immigrate!? What!

    Memories....

Oh come on! I've been in the states for quite some time now, and the majority of Arabs i stumbled upon were right down the middle. Yes some are too religious, and some are so detached from any value system, but really most are just right down the middle.

I think you need to go out and interact with a different crowd :-)
Man, I wish I was in NY, LA, Chicago or Michigan. Where there are TONS to pick and choose.
believe me when I say, I didn't stop looking for the past 8 years, and barely know a few in that middle
    Finally, a non-marriage post!

Well, what happens is the cultural shock overwhelms them. The ones who despise American values and their openness get ever more attached to their religion as a savior. they try to live the same way those did 1400 years ago. The others couldn't wait for all that family, religion, society pressure to get off their back and just live by their newly acquired belief systems. But, when they shed their original values and morals, they start anew just like a child, with non!

anyways, had you lived in the Bay Area, you would have had a different idea.

well, i stopped being picky about an arab friend...not after what i have been through in the past few years since i moved here... and yet u can have wonderful friends of non-arabs samer, yes we have different mentality and culture and so and so...but still u can rely on true friends of them when u need them.  i only met new arab families here like 2 months ago and befriend with, but still i am keeping other friends too!! actually i like it here better than ca!!

That's the most irresponsible thing you have ever written. You are truly a blithering fool and an arrogant one at that. So you have appointed yourself as the barometer for moderation and anyone who does not think or act like you is an extremist. Maybe people don't like you because you are a rude pretentious person. So just because you feel isolated from people who can't stand your arrogance, you accuse them of being extremists and you are the only sane person around. What an imbecile.

I think extremism (as you define it) is on the rise everywhere. I have been assured that niqab is the latest fashion in jordan, even though it was not when i was there not so long ago. Many more people are denouncing as sin music, fun and other random things like studying law, but it IS a worldwide epidemic. The middle people are quickly becoming a rare gem :(
I think the Arabs you are speaking of who seem to lose their morals and religion on immigrating never believed in it anyway, and were only using it for social acceptance in their home country.

Also I take exception in that you seemed for a moment to imply that you can't have morality without religion.

Having said that, there's no reason not be able to befriend both extremes and everything in between. It just depends on the person.

On the bright side, whenever someone brings up marriage, I only have to bring up my religious affiliation and then they can't run away fast enough. Hahaha!
    Garfan
Maybe it's as you said, a cultural shock and it will subside. I have seen so many who revert back to religion. (And many going in the other direction)
Many people assure me it's better elsewhere. Mainly where there's a huge community. Where people mingle more

    Afaf
I agree, my neighbors are like diamonds. They're not Arab, they're so good, and so nice that I feel blessed to have them.
But the truth of the matter is that you need to open up and share with someone. Someone you can just speak your mind to in your mother tongue!

    Suha
Irrisponsible according to who? Who appointed you the spokesperson for people's feelings and emotions?
Fool? Arrogant? Is that how your mother taught you to deal with people?
While Moderation has really no definition, and many find themselves as the center of the universe therefore moderation is their own 'definition'. I have made it clear what I believe is moderation and in this specific case, being normal, well rounded and down the center. Ahhh .. that's still too subjective I guess!
People liking me or not liking me is really not the subject here. Consider this. Imagine if you're walking down the street while someone on one side accuses you of blaspheme, while another guy at the same time accuses you of extremism, and being too particular religiously. While you're neither!

Anyway, please watch your rude language.

    Laila
I know Extremism is being used to describe a group that have been clinching to specific fanatic beliefs. But I think people who sway all the way to the other side are also equally as extremist.
But you're right, people in the middle are quickly becoming rare gems!

    Hani
You know me man. Of course I wouldn't say something like religion and Morality are the same thing. But for many, it is! Therefore, they think shedding their religion means that they also need to shed all the good things about it!
I do have friends from both extremes. But to tiptoe on every subject makes it really hard to have a deeper connection.

We only ship out extremists to the US :P

Elli beddo ykhrab, byekhrab, and the others become bearded up and ready to explode.

You see it more in the US because of the ratio between Arabs/nonArabs. But what you have described is present here as well but the effect is diluted because there are more Arabs here that's all.

    Define moderate arabs.
I guess, it's very subjective since everyone sees themselves as the center of the universe. Therefore they're moderate, everyone else is not!

I guess this needs way more thinking than I initially invested!
