Why can't people forgive? What could someone do to you to hold a grudge against someone for YEARS?

I remember the good old Arabic movies, "Did someone kill your father"?? How much is too much for forgiveness??

I pride myself on the fact that I have the capacity to forgive, I do it all the time. But not with everyone, and not for everything. Certain things and certain people I just can't forgive. I have no idea why. But no matter what I do, I just can't forgive them.

And these are people who have done so much damage in my life. Or caused tremendous amount of pain to me. Please stress on tremendous!

I find it extremely immature for people to just live their lives carrying the same ideas, and judgement about someone for too long, mainly because people do change. People have the capacity to improve. Everyone can potentially get better, and better and, with time, whatever it was that made us not forgive them, is no longer even significant!

I have seen a couple of amazing examples of people who have had a couple skirmishes. Only to grow best of friends after that!

But it all had to start with a noble act of forgiveness....

So, who're you going to forgive today?

I am going to forgive my mother who misplaced my t-shirts last night.

Oh the psychological pain she caused, when I opened my closet to not find my stuff where they should be!

On a more serious note, forgiveness is NOT an easy thing at ALL! I believe that the first step to be able to forgive is to try to look at things differently in retrospect and see what good has come out, and if it is really worth not forgiving after this amount of time has passed.

But we all have our capacities, we're human!

Ameen to that idea...but I believe time heals everything and I have never been able to hold a grudge no matter how bad the circumstances. I've seen what it can do to people and it completely poisens their outlook on life.
"Never let the sun set on your anger" I also believe that it is better Islamically to forgive- take the example of the Prophet...I'd imagine that none of us will ever go through the trials that he experienced and yet he had the capacity to forgive, so why can't we???
It's not easy to forgive especially if there is a scar to remind us .. we can cover it with a bandage and never look at it, but it doesn't mean it's gone..
I think it's ok to forgive but not to forget just so u don't get burned again..

Recently my fiance ended our engagement by blogging our troubles. To make matters worse she's never apologised for her actions. I'm not in a place to forgive or forget right now. While I agree with what you say, there are some things that need more TLC before one can forgive.
    KJ
Totally agree with you, forgiveness is not an easy task, hence it's "Divine"
But we all should learn to look past the trivialities, that's a sign of maturity...

Who knows! What do you think?

    It beats me too!

:) Good to have a kind clean heart. It will serve you well on the long run

I agree, time heals all but the worst of wounds. There are things that can be forgiven, and things that can never be forgiven because they are still on going. As in, the pain or suffering is still being inflected. Those are really hard to be forgiven or forgotten, since the pain will continue to t remind you.

You're right, it's not easy to forgive. That's why it'd Divine. But we as humans have the capacity to just let things go. But we choose not to.

First, welcome to my blog, second, I'm really sorry for whatever happened to you, but you might want to consider this a good chance for you to evaluate your whole relationship and understand that it wasn't really her blog that did this but deeper rooted issues that eventually caused the harm
Wish you and your loved ones all the best. Try to be positive about it, learn and move on.
