What exactly goes through the mind of a guy as he walks down the street with Osama Bin Laden style beard? Especially when they're living in the US!

Frankly, I don't see any difference between this guy, and the girl who walks down the street in reserved society in Jordan showing off her g-string and bottom back tattoo!

Both are defying the society, one thinking that he's getting closer to god, and the other is attracting males but also defying the norms in her society.

    Both are wrong!

It puzzles the simple Americans why would a man wear a "dress" and walk around with a huge beard that just defies all the laws of hygiene!

I'm not saying these people who carry around their gigantic beards are bad or anything. I'm just saying they look ugly, or straight out of a prehistoric human picture in a science book!

In fact, even prehistoric men have been shown to attempt and cut their facial hair, especially after the ice age was over!

I know that that prophet Mohammad PBUH have "encouraged" having beards, but that's NOT a law, and carrying a beard doesn't bring you any closer to god, nor does it show how pious or devout you are. It totally lost it's meaning, or reason! It is just an ungodly facial growth that is being universally considered unsanitary! A sign of nothing more than social stubborn defiance!

I know ... I know ... People are free to do what ever they damn want, consequently, I am free to view it as disgusting, unsanitary, meaningless, laziness  and carelessness.

I think it's about time we all take a stand and reexamine what we really mean by... Sunnah! Because beards are becoming nothing more than a fashion statement. EXACTLY like the flashy g-strings!

as you said, e6laq el le7ya sunnah and no one can dare say anything against it although I don't like it myself bas it depends on how groomed the man is and how clean he is.. some men with beards wear short "dresses" and their feet are so messed up - that is dry and not clean - it just makes one think that this actually washes up for prayer and still ain't clean.

and tell you the truth, most men with beards here in Kuwait I mean are idiots! HERE I SAID IT!

Not too fond of the beard really and like you I don't see how it makes people closer to God

I thought everything is in the heart, not the beard!
i don't mind it when guys grow very long beards , i've seen some guys in local bars here who have beards you wont even see in Tora Bora!
But when they're trying to gain something with the beard or sending a message especially in jordan that "i'm too religious, i'm closer than God than you are" that what drives me sick, and there are quite a lot of people like these  in jordan, i almost saw them on daily basis

Well, as every thing... Yes, growing a beard is sonnah, but after all sonnah is not Fard!!! Having good looks is fard i guess!!
It is sonnah so it brings one closer to God when he does it as a way of following the Prophet's steps, bs there are some things that matter more!! and deserve tobe followed alot more than growing a beard!!
Also, having abeard is not wrong when one keeps it "short", "clean", "taken care of"... not when it goes tooo long and bushy!! In the first case it is not just muslims who do, it is a style kaman... and it is found elegant by many, count movie stars who have beards? :-)

But the thing that i cannot "swallow" even if i drank a whole bottle of Citric acid is the "dishdahs"!!! Man, I can't understand why do some people stick to it as an Islamic dressing!! If thay want to wear it as a relaxing dress 7orreen, bs to make it an Islamic symbol, no no noooo... ma elhom 7a2... there is no specific "Islamic" dressing.... every thing decent and clean and good looking is accepted as Islamic... sure for girls standards are more strict, bs bardo... there is no UNIFORM for Islam!!
Since I'm bald, and overweight, I don't really give much attention to my appearance, but I shave my beard once a week with an electric razor simply because it's uncomfortable, and my head once a month simply because it dries quicker!
did the guy with the long beard make a move on you? live and let live!

I find it contradicting from you to mention this when you wrote twice about Wafaa Sultan for making fun of the Sacred things "from your point of view" and when you know that Sunna is sacred for these people and these long lines coming out of their faces is just Sunna to them. Still I agree with you here that its ugly and not clean and if it was as a Sunna then it is also STUPID.

If Sunni people think that they are being good for letting these ugly lines out and free then الله يعوض .

I Like what Naryat wrote as it shows somehow how contradicting "our" Sunna is (clean and beauty Vs doing what some think he did).

We keep hearing so many things being branded religious. Even if the prophet PBUH have said do something. There were a number of incidents where he would backtrack and say, do it however you people like it done.
If someone was to prove scientifically that it's harmful to grow a beard in that fashion (especially when we know that it will be a fertile grounds for bacteria when food crumbs get trapped inside it).
Yeah, the prophet went out of his way to look clean, smell clean and dress cleanly. Some of these guys with chipped feet and disgusting toes make you wonder where they got that from!

    KJ
It doesn't make anyone closer to anything. These days, people are just doing it as a fashion statement .. nothing more

    Hareega
LOL! Yeah, I've seen those too, they would put ZZ-TOP to shame.
You hit the nail on the head, that's exactly what I was trying to say. They're sending a message that "I'm more religious than you, therefore I'm better than you"
I do remember them in Jordan, they weren't that many few years ago, but it has gotten worse, WAY worse since then! And they've managed to get here, and start polluting the western view of Arabs in general as generally unsanitory, bushy looking

    Naryat
You're totally right, Islam, has no uniform!
Again, the very definition of sunnah needs a lot of clarification, and I think it's VERY difficult to distinguish between what is sunnah, and what the Prophet said and people took as holy after him, when he actually didn't mean much with it.
So Imagine the Dishdasheh in the streets of America!! YA 7ABEEBI!

    Hani
I shave once or twice a week, I've not that hairy to begin with (although I have a full beard and a full moustache) But I'm blessed with hair where it needs to be, On my head! No where else :)

    Garfan
I do live and let live, I'm trying to make the world a better place so that I can better dominate it! :)

    MD
There is no contradiction in my position.
First, there's nothing wrong with self criticism. That's not what Wafaa Sultan does. She curses Muslims as being Subhuman Animals who don't think and promote terrorism. Which are all lies. She also gives examples that "others" are better ...etc. When the fact is that no one is better than anyone else.
Finally, she takes a bunch of sugar-coated-lies-for-western-consumption and uses them to instigate hate and fear from Arabs and Muslims in the west. Which is exactly what Ayan Hirsy Ali is also doing. They take an exception and dub it as the rule! And that's why I don't like her position.

Now, As I said above, the distinction between Sunna, and what Muhammad PBUH has done without actually meaning it to be followed requires more research into the matter. Many have decided to just take everything and that in it's own is a huge mistake!
Just the fact that Muhammad had the vision to say: "You know more about the matters of your world" is enough to open the door to people to actually, do exactly that. Find out about things, and decide what's best. Not from a religious point of view, but from a practical one.

So I don't think it's part of Sunnah, In fact, I think it was an Arabic way of contradicting what others are doing. For very practical reasons.
    Consider this:
During the heat of battle, if everyone Arabs and otherwise all look the same, how would you fight? The Romans had uniforms for thier professional soldiers but the rest of the world didn't. So here's what you can do.
All Muslims are to have beards and no moustache. Unlike Persians who had Moustaches and no beards. Or the Jews who had beards AND moustaches ...etc. This way, people can know which team they're on by a single glance!
    Makes sense?
Now, does this make it a Shariah Sunna that needs to be followed at all times and places!? Absolutely not!

But again, this is my personal opinion and analysis of the matter.

Qwaider "But again, this is my personal opinion and analysis of the matter."
And I love this opinion, Why don't you and your likes go on TV and say these things instead of those who have beard and mustache and hair everywhere and know nothing about what they are talking about. what a lost!
