When you need to hire someone to do a job, you get two distinct kinds of people. The ROCK STARS and the mediocre support.

Everyone loves the Rock stars, everyone wants them to do thier work, however, it doesn't come cheap. In fact, hiring a rock star might be the worst business decision to make. For few simple reasons. They SUCK!

Yes, they can do the job like no one else in the world, and yes they would do it in time, on budget and with high quality. But, all of that comes at a huge cost of team moral, sustainability of the product and most importantly, attitude!

You don't want people who will break your team apart with this attitude, you NEED the TEAM, the rock star will do whatever it takes to continue shining. Not to have the whole team shine!

Here's what I learned (the hard way)...

A rock star will be mean to others, have contempt to his management, do the work his own way with disregard to everyone and everything mainly safety rules, policy, security. They would be over confident and hard to own up to thier mistakes. So yes, they basically SUCK!

However, when you have average team members who actually can work as a team, and can help each other, produce consistent but good average work that abides by ALL the rules, regulations and policies. You find yourself winning on the long term. Their work is usually easy to understand and people can just pick it up and run with it!

Instead of having someone do the work that only him and his mother can understand. You have someone who does things with simplicity and clarity! (For himself first, but for his successors too)

There's one area where rock stars can be all the rock stars they want to be. ROCK! Yes, go ahead, live like a rock star and deal with everyone like a rock star but stick to ROCK (or any form of individualistic art-form you like) You will fulfill your ego, and you will be well received. Just do the whole world and the businesses a favor, and leave them the hell alone!

    Memories....

Theres always a Rockstar everywhere I go and I always try to take the challenge of shinning more. It's not wrong to have them around, I tend to become more successful myself being around them. If he/she is THAT good and effecient then Good for him/her because its well deserved. Ele b2eedo Allah yzeedo.

3ein el 3a2l - problem is to cut off redundancy sometimes companies resort to hiring a person or two who are dedicated to do something. This poses a big problem, especially for newbies and inexperienced people like me for instance.

You get people to be very focused and this hampers their technical and personal growth. Now for example they want me to do something else to get more competence and the ROCK IMBECILE who knows-it-all refuses to teach me because it threatens his job security - cuz in the end I am of cheaper cost!

The other team I work with has a rock imbecile as well and all he does is give us wrong instructions so we mess up and then he saves the day.

Qwaider it's the old story of the tortoise and the Rabbit. It's better to have 5 tortoises than 1 rabbit, but if you can get a rabbit who works as much and has the same attitude as a tortoise. Then you have found the perfect employee. Of course the tortois-minded rabbits are one in a million!
I agree with you .. bringing a single rockstar into a mediocre team can cause trouble. However, i think assembling a team of rockstars is great sometimes (for startups and such). I have even interned in companies were the entire team was composed of rockstars ... newcomers were hired if there was a potential of them turning into rockstars. ... it was a bit intimidating at first ... i mean seriously .. every single team member was a guru in some aspect ... but man .. they sure did run a great company.
