My friend Ammar is starting the first steps towards getting married. He's been in a relationship with a wonderful lady and decided to tie the knot.

Piece of cake .. he's the man, right? .....

    WRONG!

Apparently it's much harder than that, no wonder I'm so afraid of marriage!

So last night, I got this phone call from someone I don't know ... After few minutes I realized that the man was asking me about the conduct of my friend Ammar which is few years my senior! He's not only older, but I view him as my mentor and a much wiser person.

... Quite frankly ... I was in no way, shape or form qualified to give my opinion about him. I really don't know much. He's a nice guy, but that's about it! I don't know if he molests young children or if he helps old lady's cross the street on his way to work! I don't know if he chalks little kittens for pleasure or if he's a play boy.

So why did the bride's father call me!!?

I have enough issues realizing my own existence and making it conform with my super ego to look at someone else and attest to something I didn't know that may or may not be the end of his relationship with the lady he wants!

All of these thoughts raced in my mind as I told the guy: "If I had a sister or a daughter, I would marry her off to him"

I'm not sure what he was trying to accomplish, but I guess, he had good intentions. Seemed like a nice fellow though.

This whole marriage thing in the Arab communities is just so taxing for both the bride and the groom. The social shackles keep all our dreams grounded. Women don't have it easy either....

Anyway, who knows when I will be forced to enter the cage and get clueless witnesses to attest my chastity and perhaps .. sanity!

send them over, i will do it for u....
How do they get in contact with people? I dont understand. Fathers all the sudden become the swiftest detectives. Unlike afaf, dont send them la 3ndy loool
at least you  well not get to stand infront of the mother to do the check up for every single part in your body .....
And guys don't get the grand "inspection"? Not only that, but everyone they know will be in on it as they ask everyone on the face of the planet about the guy and his sister!
As for women "check up" I don't even think that is even practiced anymore, although I wouldn't be surprised if it was. But that's only if the guy doesn't know the lady and didn't get a chance to ... ehm .. well check up on his own :)

Quite frankly, I'm not saying men have it easier or harder, I think all these archaic practices need to end up where they belong .. the history books!

The father is doing his job by asking people about the man. Put yourself in his place, wouldn't you like to ask around to see if your daughter is marrying someone decent?

The method might be a bit unorthodox but I have seen it happen and it is second nature to some people. I mean when you want to date someone, betta2es 3aleiha shway, so you can see if she is single and what kind of person she is and where she goes, from her friends (either asking or simple observation). Some guys and girls just avoid this and find out during the dating process.

Instead of looking at it in a negative way, think of a positive note (to boost your ego - which I am sure doesn't need boosting :P ) - the man actually trusts your opinion enough to ask you about the man his daughter is marrying.

Keefni ma3ak :P yalla I will put your number as reference on my groom CV
