20 years after the incident and I'm still feeling guilty about what I did. I was trying to be a good noodle. Turned out, being a good "citizen" isn't always guilt free!

I used to go to this private summer swimming club. It used to be a challenge to get into because of the demand and all. Besides everyone needs to be a member, go through health and "gender check" examination. Which was the weirdest thing ever to go through for young boys. But I guess they wanted to make sure everyone was male enough to join the club

One day, a kid from my school shows up for the first time. I was naturally surprised to see him... How was he able to get there?

I talked to him for a few minutes, he even flashed his membership ID in my face. To his bad luck, my eyes managed to make out the name and it didn't say Hatem!

The Manager of the club was my father's friend. He would drop by from time to time to check on my progress, so I kinda considered him like an uncle.

I went to the manager, and told him. He was upset! Went into the pool, dragged Hatem out and slapped him right there in front of all the kids. He had a fake ID, and could have got himself hurt since he skipped the medical check up.

I was so upset to say the least. I didn't want things to become like this. This affected me so much that I still regret it till this day. What would have happened if I didn't decide to do what I considered to to be the "right thing" to do and just kept my mouth shut!? I could have probably saved Hatem the humiliation.

    And me, the guilt

If it was me i would feel guilty either way,If I had closed my mouth after learning the truth and knowing it was not his true identity and something happened to him at that pool no one but me would know. Thats wrong. Also truth will set you free so to me now you may feel guilty, but you did the correct thing its too bad for hatem or whoever he was. Most criminals get away with murder because some one closed their mouth and didnt say what they knew, But sooner or later they will have to spit it out cause the guilt will kill them. Thats if they are even a sensible person and have morals .
you wouldn't have second thoughts about doing this if you take the ethics class with me. It's CRAZY! sometimes the too much ethics can make you feel as if living in a non real world.. being ethical is not always a good thing, and even with the 13 lectures*3 hours, I still say being ethical is not always good!
    Is this nadi il-sayarat ?

So you're either complicit in his deception and betray your "uncle" if you keep quiet or you betray the trust of a stranger and humiliate him.

I don't understand why you need a medical checkup just to go for a swim ? and a gender check ? I mean the fact that the club have such an policy would be enough to tip the ethical balance towards keeping quiet for me.
well, others misbehavior is no excuse for you not to do the right thing, if ur uncle didnt do the right thing and u didnt like it already, think about how u would think of urself had u done the wrong thing urself, u would be no better than that whom u think was not so right... no, i believe when i comes to right and wrong, u do the right thing regardless of the consequences, u should let others make their own decisions, and carry their own guilt
Mariam, but it's not always clear what the "right thing" to do is. It's not always black and white.
And doing the right thing doesn't feel good (or right) at times
well hani i didnt claim it was, but we do try, and we shouldnt feel guilty if we got it wrong, nobody is perfect, but the fact that good intentions dont usually come out as we expect them should not stop us from trying again, or feeling bad about it
Thank for the kind words Mariam.
