After a year and a half of collecting spammer IP, I decided it's time to go public with this little database. Now, I can't run against my live data so I created a staging beta for the endeavor.

Here's how it works. You can request to be added to the beta if you're interested. I will generate a key for your site. However, if you just want to test drive it a bit and see if you like it, here's a quick demo. Just bring your suspicious IPs and check them out

    Check out the demo

Again, If you want to incorporate in your own site, please let me know

(This Spammer Database is continuously updating, and so far has 2.5 million IPs)

    Thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

UPDATE: The database is now Live, it's plugged in and updating in real time as more Spam is captured

    Memories....

my blog, spam Blked 678 comments.
A good Idea, but does that include whoever gets recognised as spam by mistake (Like I am on this blog lately when I use opera, god knows why); would they land in that Database?
just curious to see the flag and the OS :D

IPs in the UAE are shared, so an oaf might spam you, then disconnect and the IP is assigned to me and I end up in your spam filter :'( ma biddi
    Hamede
Mine blocked 275,139 spams by 22,540 unique spammers out of 2,513,214 Spam IPs being monitored

Yes, it's completely a two way street, IPs can dynamically be added or removed from the database. Right now, I'm not sure about opening the update feature to the public. yet!
As for Opera, I use it frequently, but yours have been acting suspiciously (I guess it's trying to protect you) or you have messed up the settings. Either way, it's not performing properly and getting you blocked every time. But I unblocked you, we'll see how that goes.

    Abed
It's showing SUN, and South Africa, but I'm not sure about the browser. Your user agent string indicates Gecko which is Mozilla so it might be FireFox or something similar, however, it's a very old build (2006) which leads me to believe it is a very old version of Netscape! is it?

    KJ
That might be one thing. But it's more likely Lazy admin syndrome. The stupid admins on the UAE proxies allow external IPs through. This is the worst thing ever. But what can I say! What they need to do is allow only people in UAE out, but not someone from China to go through them!
If you end up on the spam list, you can be removed. In fact, your whole IP can be marked as "Safe no matter what" happens.
By the way, even if you're going through a proxy, I record the back end IP :) So don't worry
I entered an IP that spammed me today, and it returned:
        * This IP is in the database
        * It is a unconfirmed spammer
        * This IP has generated 0 spams
        * Most recently on 4/4/2008 6:47:00 PM

What does it had generated 0 spam but is an unconfirmed spammer mean ?
Are you incorporating IPs from external databases ?

Did you know that there are IP Spam databases that they make money off of it. A few weeks ago, my company's IP got blocked and they told us that we either had to pay X dollars or wait 2 weeks for the block to timeout if the spam doesn't persist. Turns out some moron brought in a virus that sets up an smtp server and it was sending out hundreds of emails per minute. I told them to do what I do, I have the whole protocol blocked on my network, I only use web mail anyway. It's too risky having all my contacts spammed.
    Hey Hani
Thanks for checking out this new thing. It's awesome to see that it's actually working
Now the awesome part is that it is actually in the database. This IP has not attempted to spam someone on the network (i.e. this blog)
So, it has been added to the database, from the sounds of it manually, but I can only know if I know the IP, or I might include the reason for the block in the response. I'm still thinking about that part.

And yes, I am incorporating IP's from all external sources. This is a global epidemic and no single service can be successful if it relied only on it's own resources.

But this specific solution is geared towards comment spam more than anything else!

Keep playing with it, and let me know what you think
    Neat!
I've just tried it with an IP address that has been spaming me alot lately, and it recognized recognized in your database (even though it says that it has generated no spam on this blog). Cool!

I knew you were doing some stuff behind the scenes, but i never figured that you are doing this much (all with the Movie widget, the Qwaider Shield, and the Comments GUID mapping) .. this so cool :-)
I'm glad you like it. I think I'm going to evolve it at some point and give people the ability to report spammers. Or spread a number of honeypots and start collecting IPs
Now here's the dilemma, what would stop people from reporting innocent IP's as spam? I guess, it's sort of an honor system but some human inspection is needed at a certain level.
That's a good question. This is sort of like the common network vulnerability. What is to stop another user from locking someone else's account simply by entering an incorrect password several times. I think you already have the answer in the page that appears when users spam your page. Give them an option to click a link and have a human (you) review removing them. Remember that people's IPs change, so a spam IP may become innocent too!
You know something Hani? I am discovering some very scary things when it comes to Spam. There appears to be some heavy hitters. People with a lot of resources at their disposal and they keep coming!

Now what you said means, I need to add the "unblock" to the list of features ... hmmm and do it programmatically through the API!
    My initial thoughts:
    Keep 2 other databases
One for user  suggested spam. (Honeypot collected spam don't need reinspecting)
Second for user suggested white list.
I'll think a little more about it and see how it goes
