Over the years I've been witnessing the evolution, and devolution to some of the friends and colleges around me. Especially the ones who descend from middle eastern origins. They come here, and right from the first moment they set foot out of the plane, the denounce anything that has to do with their heritage, their culture, their religion and anything backward that might be clinging on to them from back home!

They're new, Liberal, completely free people. In the land of the free. This is the best time of their lives and they're going to take advantage of it every way they can ..

And the partying begins, the nightclubs, the one night stands, the girl friends, the drinking, the drugs, the extravagant night life of alley cats.

I usually don't mind people being themselves. It's cool if people feel comfortable in their own skin. That's great!

But these people are not in their own skin, nevertheless, it's great for them to feel liberated from the confines of a strict culture they have been suffering from all their lives.

I'm not passing judgement or anything, in fact, I think the best thing that ever happened to these people was their short lived liberty..

I say short lived because, few years and few gray hairs later, they start a cruel and ugly process of reverting back to distorted edition of their earlier selves. In the image of their middle aged parents.

It's like a butterfly going back to a worm shaped creature, it's ugly and you really don't want to be there when it happens. The first to go are liberties of OTHERS, tolerance becomes a useless accessory and everyone is GUILTY of what these guys used to practice and warship on a daily bases.

It's time to find a wife, and settle in for them. It's the time to find that pure 18 year old peasant virgin that is going to be the proof of achievement for these folks. Proof that they are living well. Proof to all that they have sampled all facets of knowledge and wisdom and they're culimating their achievement with another title below their belt!

They've reverted to an ugly version of their own parents. They're suspicious of everyone, and everything. After seeing more action than a ladies' room toilet seat, now they are preaching virtue and projecting all their insecurities and distrust onto others.

Now I have complete understanding and sympathy to the parents who refuse to marry their daughters off to guys who have been living away... They can already foresee the ugliness of the relationship. Although, they can't generalize over everyone, many do fall down that hole and many suffer because of them

The behaviors of these guys remind me of an Arabic saying; "Two you can shouldn't believe, A young man who has been living away, and an old man who has outlived his generation" (اثنين ما بيتصدّقوا شاب اتغرّب و ختيار ماتت اجياله). (I know there is a third about divorced woman talking about her ex, but I'm not in the mood to raise a hell storm over this)

The reversion is so dramatic that it puzzles me at times. They even revert to the old crappy way of speech, or even worse. After learning to get refined and speak properly. They go back to the older exhibition of manhood through the vulgar and heavy to the ears words.

Why would someone choose to go back to an older, less representative version of themselves? It beats me! But one thing I'm certain of as people mature, almost everyone reverts. Where they end up ... is completely up to them

    Memories....

well, once they see all the new options, and in the absence of more experienced companions, they are bound to act like children, who are too happy to think about the consequences.
I think what you described can be applied in general to anyone who is getting old.

I don't think they go back to an older less representative version of themselves, rather, they are actually changing, so what do you mean by representative ?

The second phenomena where a middle-eastern guy goes to the west and suddenly indulges in every form of fornication imaginable doesn't necessarily mean they changed and at some point later they changed back. Rather this is what they are really like underneath it all, and they are just afraid to act this way in a middle eastern setting. Over there, it's like who's gonna know, over here your cosuin's uncle's grocer's friend might see you, and it won't just reflect on you but your whole family, and may come back to haunt you!
    Allah Allah ya Q!!! 3al waja3 walah!!!
ther is nothign pisses me off like these guys, how can i say it in a propriate way?? i guess there is no way to say it but "بعمل السبعة و ذمتها و بيجي بعمل حالو علي شيخ!!! "
EFT!! i just can't stand them.. allah hadak, fine, but mesh from extreme to extreme like that, i've seen A LOT of guys in the states lke that, you look at their pictures few years ago; partying and girls ans 7asheesh, and NOW.. when they see a girl بغض البصر وما بسلم .. WHATEVER!!!

I agree with Hani, when young men leave their families/countries and go abroad they have more liberty to put themselves in shitty situations that would in their home land bring shame to themselves and/or their families.

When I was still in uni (not too long ago) many girls came met7ajbat and are suddenly in night clubs, and other guys make it a contest to sleep with as many girls as possible, and other people become the opposite - they wear 7ejab or suddenly give up on all this night life and start going to a mosque. Or a mix of both.

I read a book once and I remember a line that said "life is like an arch, with the two ends near"
