If you compress the whole age of planet earth, (4 billion years) into a 24 hour day. The whole human history, everything humans ever did in the last 10 thousand years, all the wars, the rise and fall of great civilizations the entire human heritage would account for half a second of that 24 hour day!

That's as much time it takes you to blink your eyes!

Can anything else feel so humbling? Yes, picture this...

Everything that humans have ever transmitted, from radio to television to data communications. EVERYTHING is in an ever expanding bubble around planet earth that has barely reached 60 light-years away.

When you compare that to the size of our own galaxy, the milky-way, which spans 100,000 light years.

So humans are so insignificant spatially, insignificant temporally... why do we have egos that appear to be greater than the universe it self?

I remember an urban myth I used to hear, if you try to count the stars in the sky, you will break in hives and be scratching and itching... The fact it, I can spend my whole life counting, and not even reach 1% of the number of stars in the universe.

    How insignificant!

A blink! And that's only of the age of our planet. The universe is estimated to be 13 billion years old!

    Memories....

the ego is because we compare ourselves to each other for the lack of comparable species elsewhere in the indeed huge universe.
This reminds me of Geology class!! we did that calculation !!!
and as to why we are so proud of what we are , it might be becuase of the acheivements we were able to make in no time!! They are not that huge yet they are certainly remarkable , It was Homo Sapiens and not any other !!
But if u want my opinion I think because we have apposable thumbs :P No one else has those u know :P :P :P
    Have a gr8 day ...
    Regards !
You know, if all humans are gone from the planet. It will take only 1000 years to wipe everything we ever made off the face of this planet, with very few exceptions like the great wall of china, the pyramids and mount Rushmore!
Can you believe that!? Everything we've ever done .. wiped out in 1000 years

It's conceivable that if we meet some advanced alien race that they would be billions of years more advanced. Can you imagine billion year old civilization? Even our scifi writers can't imagine a billion year old advanced civilization! We're at 10,000 compared to 1,000,000,000. They are 100,000 times more advanced! I can't even start to imagine what kind of god-like-powers they posses!
