Every new blogger I see, (and I've seen hundreds) seem to always fall int he same mistakes, therefore, I decided to create this quick and dirty guys of Top 10 things not to do on your blog
I'm not concerned with actual content of the posts or the way people write. What I am interested in is technical aspect of things and this time, without being too technical about it
1. Don't play with the font
Most of the blog engines will provide something called "Cascaded style sheet" (CSS) which simply means. They take care of the Size, color and the shape of the font for you. Every time you make a change the result might not be very good. And if you decide to change your theme sometime in the future. You might end up with White text on White background. So try to never play with the fonts.
2. Huge Picture sizes
This is one of the most reoccurring mistake by many new bloggers. They upload a nice high resolution picture to help them represent their thoughts. What they don't know is that it will take 2 minutes to download on people's computers and people generally will lose interest and just leave. The solution? Open your pictures in any photo manipulation software and resize it. Also reduce the quality while saving it to make it smaller in size. I like Paint.Net and Google's Picasa. I'm sure there are many others.
3. Copy and paste with crap
This is another case where many people seem to fall in the trap of copy and paste. So you want to add material from another site, or from a document you created in Word. The problem here is that these will come with something called "Markup" which are some additional tags that specify font details and other junk that is not needed. So what do you do? You need to strip your text from all this markup and to do this, you can copy your text, paste it in notepad (the tool that come with windows) then copy it once again, and only then paste it back in your articles, clean from markup.
4. Broken links back to yourself
Another very common mistakes is broken links. Many people like to link to others. But when they do that they forget to add the HTML prefix http:// what this symbol means is that this is a website that you will use the HTML transfer protocol to reach. But forgetting this prefix (http://) most of the time will give the current editor to make a guess where this link goes to. Most of the time it thinks that you want to link to a local page and adds the prefix (http://yoursitename.yourblogengine.com) and THEN adds your link. At this stage it will be completely broken
5. hot linking
Hot linking is the act of taking pictures from other sites and posting them in your articles. It's VERY bad. Because it uses the other site's bandwidth, so people get very upset about that. And there is no guarantee that the picture will not change address. In fact if you hot link to any page on Imdb (the movie database) you can guarantee that it will be gone in less than a week. So spare yourself and others the trouble
6. Copyrighted materials
It's a serious offense to reproduce any copyrighted material without it's owners consent. Make no mistake, people might prosecute you over their intellectual property and they will win. So books, news clippings, pictures and other material that shouldn't be reproduced (movies, songs ...etc) do not belong on your blog. The least common sense says, if you do it, don't advertise it
7. Delete your blog
It's inevitable that many times you will be frustrated and you will decide to delete your blog. Remember it took you months, or even years to establish your blog. Deleting it is a huge thing that you need to be prepared to do. An alternative is to just shut it down.
8. Embedded auto-play music
This is one of the most annoying features in any blog. People get really upset of it. Remember people might be in meetings, have the volume really loud or just don't share the same taste of music that you have. Be courteous and don't force your taste of music on your readers
9. Neglecting your blog or readers
Neglect is the cancer of any blog. People will start going away, your links will start getting dropped and eventually people will move on and forget about you.
Also remember to answer your comments and do maintain your blog, remove all the "You're blog is awesome" spam. Make sure you are not a hub for spammers
10. No titles!
Titles are VERY important, don't ever publish a post without adding a title to it. It's very important it means a lot and it allows people to distinguish between what they want to read and what they don't want to read. Even if you add something like "Untitled" it's better than no titles at all.
So there you have it... enjoy blogging, hopefully these tips will help you out
Memories....
as for the font changing, using a plugin in firefox will solve this problem
Firefox is amazing, and i can see u are not one of its fans...
*weeps uncontrollably*
I guess not just n00bs fall in these traps. Older "veterans" also appear to embed large audio files on their blogs causing huge delays in the page load.
الــــ[مش]ــــــــعبيط
There's no need to use any polygons. Just a few precautions here and there will take you a long way
I use firefox, my blog is firefox friendly. But I'm not a fan, because I'm not one that follows hypes. I like things, and reserve my opinions on them based on many things. Firefox is good, but is it the greatest and most innovative thing to ever be made? No, not even in it's own game
KJ
Yep KJ, eventually people will move on
But remember there are people who would keep you around on their aggregators way after you have gone, and maybe bring you things you didn't imagine
ProudPali
It is rude only if you direct a specific question. But if it's just a generic comment. I would cut them some slack.
There are owners who don't even care about the audience. They have their own little stagnant pool of sick praise(ers) and they're satisfied with that.
Ruba
Yes, Ruba, I highly recommend that you upload them to your own share somewhere.
The test pasted from word contains a lot of markup that will cause issues in the future. Large pix that are not cropped, not compressed are not a good idea either
Playing with font and color shouldn't happen on the scale of the whole article. You have "Styles" that you can manipulate as you like, but it's not a good idea to do this for every single line. Because as I said, if you do this, you might end up with black on black or white on white
This guide is not here to embarrass anyone or blame them. These will help them down the road and evade a "Gosh what was I thinking" moments
Sara
Why did she delete it? Why didn't she keep a copy or something .. remember .. her blog has a wealth of her work, it's all lost now
Thanks!
as for firefox, with all due respect to the open source community which have done a lot, hats off to Microsoft, they have sat there and took the insults with total positiveness when THEY were the first to invent most of the cool stuff on their very generously buggy browser - yeah, who said u gotta get it right from the first time, here is a list of those cool things (and mind u im a client side programmer so i had my full share of this stuff)
Ajax: used to be called Download Default Behavior on IE FIIIIVEE people, thats before FireFox came into view, and the HTTP ActiveX object was built in as of IE5 (as i recall) which is typically what Ajaxians use to open an http request!
Behaviors: W3C are still suffering to find something that solves the issue of seperating behavior from layout, Microsoft already suggested behvaiors which are amazing, nothing in FireFox (who are so sensitive towards standards) matches them, kudos Microsoft
Javascript funky stuff: user persistence, execCommand, editableContent, client-side databinding (they actually borrowed the concept back to .NET! its been there ever since IE FOOUUURR) ... and a whole bunch of crazy stuff
last but not least, dare i say: Adobe Air? YES, microsoft IE has an engine that runs pretty much like a stand alone application, its called HTA (html application) and although i havent worked enough on Air, i can smell somethin too familiar about it!
so who the F*** is firefox (with all due respect) :)
I think you are the worst blogger ever! It's no surprise that you are famous, since your target is "average". You are average!
man you suck!
I am glad you show the country of the person commenting, or you would have blamed me for the comment above.
may i ad that writing very long post without paragraphs ,small fonts, can drivre readers away
its important twhen u look at the topic before reading it that you dont feel it is crowded and messed up,having the topic in paragraphs, even trying to format a bit with bold or colr can make the reader go and finish the topic.
i am writing this becuase i can take an embedded music i can take a titleless topic but i cant read a topic that is just words and words and more words.
we are not talking cotent here just appearance
and providing bloggers with tips is awsome Qwaider we all can learn something every now and then.the day we stop learning is the day we die
b3eed il shar 3anna :D
I hate this the most ... some blogs i stopped visiting them because i know a very loud music will drive me crazy and make me don't concentrate on what i am reading ..
very good tips walla :D and not only for new bloggers
I agree with you .. you're right
Mariam Ayyash
LOL! You're going to raise hell for what you said. I know most of the stuff you said, and have created a ton of HTA's for use on some projects way back when. You forgot one thing. WMI integration and access from HTA (I am able to do all kinds of win32 applications with a simple HTML page that utilizes WMI, I can even control Domain behavior through ADSI inside an HTA application)
The way Firefox police the standards make me want to break the PC in front of me, while IE will take just about any junk and render it nicely. Firefox is way too sensitive about standards. A huge mistake if you ask me. But who cares. It works, and site owners need to clean up their crap
qwaidersucks
If you hate me so much, why even bother... My name is going to continue to pop in your face, you have a choice. Focus on the content (not the name) or go join Qwaider Victims club.
Oh and grow up

I don't talk on behalf of Jordanian bloggers. I never did.
But excuse me, I've known how the Internet works before you learned how to wipe your butt. No one is trying to monopolize it here. To the contrary, we're trying to Share it.
It's a big web out there. there's room for everyone, including little kids like you
Now run along
oh did I mention to you that you need to grow up?
Mab3os
It's ok, I wouldn't have blamed you anyway. Why do you think I hate you so much? I don't hate you
LostWithin
Yes sir, I'll try.
Jerusalem
Completely agree. But I would generalize it to any large content. Picture, music, sometimes even flash. All of these things make an unpleasant experience for the user
Mala2e6
Hey great Mala2e6 I missed you so much
Yes absolutely, punctuation, paragraphs are major issues. It's usually due to copy and paste problem I mentioned with the fonts. It looks great on Author's computer but very bad on user's computer
Yes my dear, the day we stop learning is the day we die. And sharing this knowledge is just as important
Simsim
Thanks.. I really hope they will help bloggers. We live and we learn :)
So I Changed my profile Picture to 137 KB instead of 948 KB is it good enough or still huge?
137 is still huge, but it's WAY better than 1MB. The size of course depends on many factors. So that might be enough for now, but you can use any of the tools I mentioned to save a highly compressed version of the same picture
If you provide me with a link to the image, I can see how much I can compress it without sacrificing the quality much
I upload it at this link
http://www.esnips.com/web/shaltaf-ArtPhotos
Take your time and thanks alot.
Don't be fooled by the small size, right click and save to your PC to see the size
So I mean u gotta be considerate to the ppl reading. :)
Awesome tips by the way. ;)
Keep it up!
